You completely misread what he said.  Although he is slightly mistaken in that his scenario doesn't quite apply to the OP, he is talking about people who are trying to go faster than all of the many groups in front of them.  He's talking about that guy who's all stressed out on the freeway because he needs to be there NOW and he keeps changing lanes back and forth and back and forth and yet he's not moving any faster than the rest of us.  But unlike commuting, golf is supposed to be a fun and leisurely activity, so he's simply saying that if you find yourself in a golf traffic jam, relax and remember why you are out there in the first place.  (Presumably) because you enjoy the game and likely the company you are with.

Thanks you.  So many people on this site misread, or completely miss the true point of a response.  Shooting29 is another perfect example.

I've been in a couple of 5-hour rounds the past few seasons.  I don't go to those courses anymore.  My normal rounds on weekends with my guys all happen at 4 hours or a bit shorter.

My point was exactly as you read.  No sense in trying to get ahead of the group in front only to wait on the next group and have the group of you passed waiting on you.  Sometimes there is simply no way to escape slow play other than exiting the course.

I'm with you, pace of play expectations are "situational", they really should vary based on the course, the day of the week, the time of day.   On an uncrowded course, I expect faster groups to be asked to play through very quickly.  On a crowded course at mid-morning on a weekend, I expect to stay in place, and hope that the pace is reasonable.  In the OP, at a private club, knowing most of the players, and seeing the tee sheet, its realistic to expect to be asked to play through pretty readily.  At the same time of day and week at a crowded public course, its absurd to expect to play through every group in front of you, and 4 hours is a pretty reasonable expectation.

I don't think the OP was being an ass. I think people who are slow and think 4-5 hour rounds are acceptable are the a-holes.

This kind of rigidity in attitude can be a big part of the conflict.  Its ludicrous to expect to play in two hours at just about any time, except as the first group in the morning.  Even at non-touristy clubs I've played in the UK, where pace of play is generally quicker than in the US, the expected time is typically 3:15 to 3:30.

I wouldn't say the OP was being an "a-hole" but, personally, I'm perfectly OK with a 2 hour front 9.  For me - I would like to play it faster than that. . but 2 hours is below my "annoyance threshold".  2 hours is about the limit, though . . longer than that and I definitely start to feel the crush of slow play.  More than 2.5 hours and I'm considering bailing on the back 9.

well, considering four hours, give or take a few minutes, seems to be the generally accepted pace of play, I think you should re-evaluate who  the a hole is

Generally accepted by whom? Slow players. The "standard" 4 hr round is a relatively new concept, considering that it was unacceptable to play that slowly just a few decades ago, and still is unacceptable in many places overseas.

Some background information before you vote...

I run a weekly game on Saturdays and Sundays with anywhere from 8-12 guys. Handicaps in my group range anywhere from 1 to 16. Expected pace of play at my course is right at 4 hours. Anything more and its frowned upon. We do not get the earliest tee times of 8am, because the course does me a favor by allowing me to have standing tee times without having to call every week. We have 9:00-9:10-9:20 every weekend.

At the turn the assistant pro let us through, and we played through the 4some on 11 without them missing a beat. Ended up playing in 2 hours and 55 mins, even with the hold up (all three of us shot sub 80 rounds).

My only issue is that the tone, at least to me, of even your post reads...

Hey don't these people know I'm here every week at this time and even though we say 4 hours is acceptable, it really isn't if we can find a way to speed things up for our groups.  And even though I suck up standing tee times for 3 foursomes in prime time every weekend it doesn't matter if I can't fill those starting times.

You have it pretty good, I would think you could exercise a bit of patience every now and then.  I can understand your actions if this were a weekly occurrence.

You basically answered your own question: Americans of the present day.

Also, lol at "a few decades ago" being used to imply a short time.

30-40 years is a long freaking time ago!

We always fill our times, and if we don't, by Thursday, I give the open slots back to the club.

We also don't get tee times within the first hour of play, so "prime time" is easily accessible to the entire membership.

This morning we played in exactly 4 hours. Its Oct 1 so 5 somes are now allowed for the winter. One guy in our first group had a rough day so our 5some waited quite a bit. Still a 4 hour round.
