I guess I talk too much golf around the house. My wife informed me she got on the website on the right time and day and got an order to go through. I think I'll keep her. Looking forward to trying the Costco ball out.

That's very interesting. Thanks for sharing. You can just see the big-name-sponsored guys gyrating - probably taking orders. Pretty funny. Frankly...I'd never expect a ProV1 to be a real long ball, based on my own golf experience. So, it's interesting to see that this is an area of contention in the discussion. If I'm in a long drive contest I'm not thinking ProV1. Strange. This Kirkland ball mania is certainly getting the attention of the industry establishment.

In my background (mechanical engineering) I always think soft=low coefficient of restitution. So, the heavy marketing push over the past year or two about "soft" balls while touting their distance improvement seems counterintuitive. With my game, I can't keep a marshmallow ball straight enough off the driver. I remember trying to play a balata once when I was pretty new to the game and still laugh about it - on the hardest course in the region, of course. Just me (geek) commenting on my thoughts. When I play I always see ProV1s that guys have lost in the rough and think, "Yep". Just seems like they're missing the big market of average hackers. Or...is the big market golfers who overestimate their abilities?

Custom fit RBZ irons. Taylormade RBZ driver. Some crappy old high-bounce Macgregor wedge and an even older Mizuno 5 wood. Haven't settled on a ball yet - still looking. Decades of football, weightlifting and boxing came together to create the world's worst golfer. I'm slowly correcting that now.

And well it should. This is one of the best examples ever of "giving the people what they want." As we all lament too often--even Jack--golf is too expensive. I remember back in my marketing youth that the way to make a million dollars is to sell something for a million, or sell a million that cost a dollar. Both are a million, but the first one has more status, the latter is considered low class. In a nutshell, golf.

I wonder what the industry establishment is thinking? (Like how soon does this pass and we get back to making big bucks?) It would be nice if they are thinking about the revolution these balls might have started.

Softer balls are slower. They sometimes give more people added distance because they tend to spin more, so the ball doesn't fall out of the sky as much as some firmer balls might.

That's all.

This has probably not affected the industry appreciably. Not yet anyway.

I agree with you, but probably for opposite reasons.  Resistance is futile.  :-D

then why do the club manufacturers make such a big deal out of their drivers having less spin?

Better players often need less spin.

Too low (like the SLDR for a lot of people) is bad.

Costco ball is actually a old Taylormade ball that Costco bought the rights for. Costco had this Kirkland ball out before and it never sold or met with the hype as this ball is out for now.

WITB:
Taylormade M2 - 10.5º
Taylormade M2 - 3w 15º
Callaway - Apex CF16 9i-3i
Vokey - 46º F Grind
Taylormade MG - 54º, 60º
Scotty Cameron - Newport M1  - 4.5º
Taylormade - TP5X #7

    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
