And they might not even use it more than two weeks per year?

That's what I'm curious about as well.  It looks like they'll be in the fairway of a roughly 400 yard par 4, about 75 yards short of the green.  So does ANGC permanently build a fence around their new property and force ACC to redesign that hole (there appears to be plenty of room to push the fairway to the left if they want to), or does ANGC temporarily fence off the area for the Masters and then allow ACC to continue to use it as their fairway the remainder of the year?

EDIT:  Whoops, should have read @Hardspoon's link first:

Currently, Augusta Country Club's ninth hole sits just behind Augusta National's 12th green and 13th tee. In addition to paying for the land -- a price tag believed to be $27 million -- Augusta National would offer to hire someone to redo Augusta's ninth hole, according to Golfweek's report. The move is also being done to add a service road back there and more of a buffer between the two courses.

Nah, they'll keep the 9th the way it is. On Masters Sunday when Rory McIlroy is teeing off on 13 he'll have to watch out for Mr. and Mrs. Havercamp playing through.

Here's a satellite view of the 13th tee, showing a 50-yard expansion.  It would protrude into what is now the fairway of the 9th hole at Augusta Country Club.

I wonder how much buffer area they are purchasing.

I was curious about the approximate value of the land.  Assume they need a 30-yard wide driving "alley", 50 yards deep, and then also purchase a 10-yard buffer on all (three) sides.  That's 50 yards by 60 yards...3,000 sq.yd, or about 0.6 acres.  If it's a $27 million dollar purchase, that equates to...

...$45 million per acre.

Yikes.

For comparison, I did some quick research on land prices in Downtown Manhattan.  I couldn't (quickly) find much current research, but there were studies pegging vacant land downtown at around $9 million/acre in 2006 (10 years ago).

The most expensive empty lot overall in New Jersey is $4 million/acre.  #2 on the list actually comes close at $44 million/acre (asking price), for a quarter-acre beachfront lot south of Atlantic City.

Considering the how much revenue the masters tournament generates, 20+ mil might only be a drop in the bucket for them. Im sure a large portion of that money will be put to use by Augusta CC re-building and rerouting that portion of their course to accommodate the intrusion.

I read this last month and cant help but think its a crazy idea. Isnt the land they are buying part of the neighbouring golf course?

It just seems that golf course owners/designers think that the solution to reigning in the long hitters is to throw money at the problem and make the course longer. I agree with Jack Niclaus, he said in an interview a while back that the ball needs to be changed fron the pro game and that it would be cheaper to modify a £20k mold than keep changing courses. Rant over....i'll go and calm down a bit.:8)

Well, officially the 'problem is solved' because average driving distance (on measured drive holes) has tapered off after driver and ball restrictions were applied. However, now fairway woods are increasingly 'hot' and clubmakers have developed thin-faced irons. I don't want to sound conspiracist, but isn't it odd that the distance category for all drives gathered under shotlink is no longer available on the PGA site?

I'm not against club makers earning a buck, but I agree in terms of cost to the consumer (us) that larger courses as the norm will tend to increase the cost of the game (if courses are concerned about defending par) and loses some nice connection to history with 'old classics' in the rota for Majors.

I was surprised by the post. I thought they announced this during this year's Masters. Only just concluded the deal?

it looks tom me like the new hole is going to be a pretty hard dogleg left...into large area of trees. The hole may not be great but for 25 or 30 it will be fine...just saying.

I doubt they need 10 yards on all sides, or 30 yards width. So that's probably closer to $60M/acre or something. And they might not even use it more than two weeks per year?

True that! It's not like the members will be teeing off back there!

Every time I see the aerial view it staggers me how much of a dogleg that tee shot is. It would scare me stiff trying to hit driver there...

I'll post this in the 2020 Masters topic, too, but they're not adding a tee farther back.

    • Couple things to update First on the clubs/ball. I switched golf balls to the Left Dash ProV1x. It seems like a great fit for me. I always need lower spin off the tee, it's about a half club longer into greens, and still gives me enough spin with chips and pitches to hit whatever shot I need. The durability is insane too, played 35 holes with one over my last two rounds and it still looked brand new until I lost it. Hybrid is no longer. Couldn’t quite get a consistent strike and the random snap hook left was always lurking as soon as the strike drifted out towards the toe. I know it was me not the club but I couldn’t stand the lefts anymore. Titliest fitting guy came to our club a few days ago and I had been curious about the T200 3iron. I hit a few with it and the stock HZRDUS graphite shaft, it wasn’t bad at all but I could definitely tell when I mishit it. Then the fitter had me try the U505 3iron. When he asked if I was open to trying it I said something like “Isn’t that the game improvement one?” and he said “Just trust me and hit a few with it”. Within 5 swings I was sold. Suddenly it didn’t look as big and chunky when I started hitting rocket after rocket. It did every single thing I want a 3 iron to do. It flies very high, forgiving, can hit it off the tee and ground, can flight it low when needed, and best of all, it doesn’t go left. He had me try to snap hook one left and it resulted in a nice tight draw, nowhere close to a hook. Tried it with the stock shaft and their upgraded one, ended up hitting it the best with the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ-95. Ended up getting a great deal on a used one that arrived yesterday so going to go measure my numbers with it today at the range. I expect to be using this a lot for 2nd shots into par 5s, being that 230-250 club. Hit some on the Mevo+ yesterday and the distance is exactly what I needed.     From a playing perspective, been playing pretty solid so far this season, driving and putting have been solid overall, approach shots have been good for the most part and short game wasn't great to start the year but it's been getting better lately with some more dedicated practice. Compared to scratch over 7 rounds:
    • so with the driver. Feel more arm  width at A4. keep an in the eye on the ball. The first move from the top is lowering the hands down. Don’t mix that up with looking up at the target as the club comes down from A4 with the body. Feel like I get width with the arms from the chest in the Downswing.

    • Went back and reviewed my rounds this year at my home course to fill out the spreadsheet. Realized I have made at least par on each hole but two that I have bogied. At my skill level, it gives me a new confidence that I can play each hole decently well and strong together a lower score. Great mental boost.
    • I'm at 330 I think. I have a spreadsheet with all of them in it. It helps having lived in two countries. 159 in the US and 136 in the UK. Then a handful in Europe and a few in other countries (Canada, Australia, Mexico).
