I'm getting a new toy for Christmas. I'm getting a new driver and it's going to be a Ping G30. I'm stuck between the regular G30 and G30 LS Tec. My solid/proffered hits are push draws with a mid launch. My mishits are blocks and the occasional push slice. My straight hits tends to be slight fade bias. Which way should I go? I'm leaning toward the LS.

The G30 driver of crown turbulator fame has three variants:

G30. The versatile base model.
* G30 LS Tec. Low-spin model - you need really good clubhead speed to maximize this one. Reportedly the least forgiving of the three.
* G30 SF Tec. This one has a draw bias.

Going into 2015, I got a chance to test out all three. The G30, with 10.5* loft and R-flex TFC stock shaft, gave me the best numbers of any driver I tested that year. (But, for some reason I didn't replace driver).  The LS Tec gave me low trajectory regardless of the shaft type. I got about 160 yds. carry and maybe 50 runout. The SF Tec with draw bias - no way for me. Even when I lined up to the right, the ball flew down the center line and turned hard left at the apex.

Get on a launch monitor to see how the G30 offerings perform. IMHO, the LS Tec would be problematic for you.

Here's a Golf Monthly review of the G30 family of drivers.

Funny you should mention it:

I've done one review here at TST, and it was among the three heads for the G30. Before I became staff, I won the new driver in a contest- which gave me the opportunity to get fitted.

From my experience (and obviously we are all different), the LS Tec had the poorest shot dispersions of the three heads, and I recall that the shots were drifting right (fade/slice).

I ended up with SF Tec, as the title of the thread shows.

I've worked quite a bit on my swing since then, so it's anyone's guess which of the three would "win" now. At the time, I was quite steep on my downswing and always fighting a slice.

The LS is a lower spin version of the G30. Any idea what your launch and spin numbers are?

For what it's worth, these were my numbers with the SF Tec. Apparently, the numbers I was generating that session were not suited well for LS Tec. (12 and 2500, with out-in swing)

Swing speed?

Seems like the LS might be a good fit.

One thing to consider: The LS Tec will be the least forgiving since its MOI is the lowest (moving weight forwards decreases MOI compared to having it back as is standard, but moving it forwards is what is usually done to reduce spin). According to PING the G30 LS Tec has a 6% lower MOI than the standard G30.

It would appear to me that you might be hitting slightly down on the driver, or at least not as far up as is optimal, to create that low launch and high spin with a lower swing speed. You may be better suited thr more forgiving driver than the LS Tec driver , though the LS Tec may help you gain distance immediately by reducing your spin rate somewhat. Whether or not that's worth the lack of forgiveness is up to you.

@RandallT and @mvmac,

Sorry guys. I did a TST search on G30 before my initial reply, and didn't find RT's version of the review. I try for in-house reviews when I can find them.

No need apologize! You know tons more about equipment than I do, so all the info is good. My review was just one guy, with one slice-y swing- and just meant as a data point for the OP. Sounds like the LS Tec head (the one that was a poor fit for me) might even be his best option, according to what I'm gathering above. I find it very interesting- more evidence to me that people need to be fitted to find out for themselves.

Roughly 89mph, low 150 mph ball speed

Yeah don't go with the LS head then.  I've played the G30 LS and now G LS, but I have 120mph club head speed.  I've let friends try to hit it with around 100mph clubhead and it flies too low for them.  I would stick with the regular G30.  SF would get you more forgiveness, but I think you'll like the regular G30 more.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
