Hey guys, I hope all of you had a great Christmas! So I got this fitness watch for Christmas and it can monitor my heart rate and it got me thinking, is there an optimal heart rate range during the shot? And if there is, would it be possible and legal to use this watch during my round to control my heart rate to this range during shots?

It's not legal to check your heart rate while playing.

It's legal to wear it and look at the data when you're done, so long as it doesn't display the information and you don't access it while playing your round.

And the optimal heart rate is pretty much your resting heart rate, I would imagine. You don't want to be anxious or have a higher heart rate.

Your heart rate is much more likely to be affected by walking rather than hitting the actual shot. So if you just walked up a big hill it will take longer to get your HR down to the same level as if you are riding in a cart and park it a few inches from your ball. I worked at a company that made a HR monitor and I doubt very seriously that you will find any correlation between your HR and the quality of your shot. It will be all over the map. If you do find some correlation please post here.

Just before I left that company I was studying something called heart rate variability(HRV). It is well documented that you can determine stress levels from this. We could also show by relaxed breathing techniques we could improve HRV and improve stress levels. Basically from the HR monitor on your watch I could tell you if you were stressed and remind you to breath in a specific way. Thing is something telling you are stressed is pretty much telling you something you already know. So for that it was useless. HRV has some benefits for sleep that are useful, but tell you that you are stressed isn't that useful.

And @iacas has clarified the rules portion.

Can you check your pulse using the old fashioned way? ? Fingers on the wrist, multiply the number of pulses in 10 seconds by 6.

I agree, I would think near the resting heart rate would be preferred.

Yes.

Or 15 seconds by 4.

From what I read above it's not even legal to "monitor" your heart rate using one of these gizmos during "official" play. But I would remind you that no heart "monitor" can be used to "control" your heart rate. That's entirely up to you.

It's fine to wear it so long as it doesn't display the information. I said that up-thread.

You can look at the end of the round.

I just wanted to resurrect this thread because iacas said that we should be at our resting heart rate during the shot/putt. There's so many golfers who don't actually do this, is it even possible to calm ourselves down to that rate in less than a minute after brisk walking? If it is possible, how do we get there?

If your concerned about your heart rate rising excessively during a shot just remind yourself that you don't pay the mortgage playing this game. It supposed to be fun

It depends on whether you inhale or exhale during your shot/putt. :-P

I'm j/k of course. I don't think you need to worry about what your exact hear rate is, as long as you are calm and relaxed, you're probably fine.

I'd consider that walking shouldn't appreciably raise your heart rate. Whatever it is when you arrive at the ball it should be easy to hit it with that rate or a slower one.

Not a faster rate.

    • Day 211 (29 Nov 24) - Friday men’s round albeit a solo foursome (temps in the 40’s, day after Thanksgiving and the average age closer to 75 - I’m a youngster at 65).  Interesting day of semi-solid play (8 of 18 GIR). Hit all four par threes in one (a first) - parred each; still had a couple 3 putt bogies; and blew up on 3 of the par 5’s (go figure)). The blow ups were some serious tree rattlers - amplifying how I got stupid and greedy instead of smart and content to just get back in the short stuff.
