Ok, so towards the end of the summer i bought a Titleist 690 mb 2 iron, and loved the look of it, and then proceeded to buy a 3, 4, 5 and 6 iron..   in hind sight i probably should of just bought a complete set, but oh well lol....... but since then i've bought another 2-6 iron, just in case..

my thinking is i can use one set for playing and one for practice...not that i will ever wear them out, but the ones i did get was either NOS or barely used..

and as for the 7 - PW, i did pick up a new 7 iron  ( 716 mb ) off ebay for a hell of a deal.. so i figure i will add the 8 - pw once i get my taxes back..

just curious if anyone else does this with iron's that might be hard to find?

It is what it is

Absolutely.  My Callaway S2H2 set began with a single 5 iron.  Over the years I found a club here and a club there and, eventually, put together an entire set.  My current project consists of two, Tour Edge V blades...god knows how long this will take...and he ain't sayin'.  I think of it as a holistic approach to club acquisition: it fulfills my need to do something - without requiring any effort on my behalf.

In der bag:
Cleveland Hi-Bore driver, Maltby 5 wood, Maltby hybrid, Maltby irons and wedges (23 to 50) Vokey 59/07, Cleveland Niblick (LH-42), and a Maltby mallet putter.                                                                                                                                                 "When the going gets tough...it's tough to get going."

I have a set of Tour Edge V-Blades I'm just missing the SW.

Which is hard as hell to find.

Oh yes.  I've done the same thing.  Shafted them a little differently though for practice and playing.  Got extra, extra clubs in the garage if anyone needs something!

Yea.... guilty.  I am a club collector.  I have 2 sets of all my Ping clubs.  I don't have backup's for my MC102's or MP67's so I guess I will have to work on that!

I don't get the concept of practicing with clubs other than those you'll be playing with.  It takes me a long time to acclimate to clubs so I couldn't imagine using a different set on the range, unless they were identical to my gamers.

I rarely use a 4i, but I do like to practice with one longer iron than the set I play with.  If I can hit that well in practice, it makes hitting the shorter clubs that much easier.

on topic - I have an extra driver (won't sell because driver is the only club I've broken and it's nice to have a spare).  I have a spare SW and LW, but only because I haven't sold them.  I could see having spare wedges with different bounces if one played in a lot of different conditions and were very serious about the game.

Since resale is such a poor bargain usually, I could see just accumulating old sets and clubs over time.  Or giving them to friends just starting, or maybe school teams.....

This makes sense but others were discussing having a practice set and a gaming set.  That's not a concept I can quite grasp.

Another thought on extra irons...

Golfers should consider getting a demo iron which matches their current iron set. You can use the demo for experimenting. That way, if you're considering changing loft, swingweight, or reshafting, you can test things out on the demo iron.

My X20 Tours came with PX 5.0 Rifle Flighted shafts, which were a bit hard to handle on most days. I got a demo 6i, and had it reshafted in both DG R300 SL and NS Pro 8950GH. Did tests with both configs, and then opted for the NS Pro on full reshaft.

Something to consider...

Well just for clarification about practice and playing clubs one may have, I use the practice set to try different shaft set ups, swing weights, etc.  Might go some time using just that set or change out the gamer due to injury changes.  Everybody might have a different reason or desire.

well, the only thing i think i will try is taking the 2/3 irons down to the 4 iron length, and the 5/6 irons down to the 7 iron lengths.. since i seem to hit my 4 and 7 irons the best / most consistently...   but nothing is going to happen till spring time....

But i think it will be nice to have just a practice set of irons i can use

It is what it is

If you want to have extras of the same stick... go for it.

My previous irons were MP-52, and I picked an extra 6i (same specs) to keep in the Jeep in the event I randomly wanted to hit the range at lunch or something.

I may do the same with my current irons.

I will often nab a cheap club, from the bargain bin, because it has the same shaft as one of my other clubs.  It has never paid dividends; but I do it anyway.

BTDT from entire sets to individual clubs. At one time, I had  complete set of older Hogan Edges with graphite shaft, and another of the same irons with steel. Lost a 7 iron once (left it at Palm Springs muni), and later replaced it with a shaft of different flex. Thrift shop wooden woods too. Palmer, Puma and then Burner Bubble, and Burner steelheads.  I am a "ho".  Made poor decisions too. I let go of a perfectly good set of 962's (DCI Blacks), sold set of Tight Lies bag and all. Presently, I am getting some decent stuff one at a time.

I had a back-up set of irons, driver and wedges in the event that a club was lost/stolen or broke.  Thankfully it has never happened to me, but I saw it happen every day to others when I was in golf retail.  If I needed to take my clubs on a trip and check them with the airline, I took my back-up set unless it was a tournament or something like that.  Have been fortunate to not have a club broken or lost by the airlines either!

    • For someone with a very consistent swing speed and ball strike, upgrades may improve performance. For everyday golfers, probably not. I'm a rather odd player. I usually get best performance from basic pro or tour heads, but with lighter stock shaft from the model's standard driver set up. (Yes, current EXS is an exception.) When I get a full driver fitting, I usually try a couple of modest upgrade  (not super magic) shafts. Most of the time upgrade gives a couple of extra yards, or 10 yards less. Remember this about stock shafts: They are matched to a particular driver model to fit the type of player likely to adopt that model. Also, most OEMs offer a variety of stock shafts in their drivers. Test for which one works best. And, the final decider...
    • Uh, seeing you're having trouble with hit-and-miss performance from inherited clubs... Get Fitted! IF the 910H pair don't work, swap them out. Also, only two degrees separation in loft is not much. You might consider a 4W (much more reliable than a 3W) plus hybrid. This would give more distance separation than two Hs. For hybrid, get one you can hit... Maybe a more benevolent 4H. Quite often I try to brand match my bridge clubs (FWs and Hs), and my irons and wedges... but not always. Whatever works!
    • Like others have said, get fitted. Since 2011, I have played some combination of 4W + 7W. I had a Cobra 3H and 4H a couple of years back, and would swap out the 7W for a 3H in cold months (keep out of cold wind, and rough thinner for wayward drives.) The 7W matched up with yardage often with 3H; the current 4H goes almost as long as 7W, but has a lower trajectory. 4H also bumped out 4i in last bag redo; I learned to hit stinger with 4H so that's my driving iron on tight holes with shallow landing area. Again, a side-by-side test will tell you which way to go. If 5W or 3H is meh, keep the 7W. Also, are you looking to replace the 7W with a 5W or 3H, or add a second bridge club (5W or 3H) to your bag?
    • Makes sense and aligns with other literature. Static stretching, especially for longer durations, can impede performance in strength and power activities. I would not want to do like hamstring, quad, and calf stretches then go immediately sprint. To me that sounds like a terrible Idea. I would rather start off walking, then jogging, then running, then ramp up to sprinting.  To me, static stretching isn't even a warmup activity. I like the term warmup; you want to get some exertion going before the activity.      a { text-decoration: none; color: #464feb; } tr th, tr td { border: 1px solid #e6e6e6; } tr th { background-color: #f5f5f5; }
    • Going to Florida for the usual February golf trip, and with our current weather, that date won't get here soon enough. Heading to Augusta GA for the Tuesday Master's practice round, will definitely get some golf in while I'm in the area for a few days. Hope to be able to catch up with @coachjimsc if he's around. Then it's back to Scotland first of July.  Playing 7 new courses, can't wait for that.  Then somewhere after that is the Rhode Island CC Member-Guest and then my normal October golf trip to Myrtle Beach.
