3/04  (Part II) - pitching in front yard x 45 mins. Primarily trying to figure out distances with varying swing heights for 20, 30, 40 yd distances. Improving. Did more wall drills throughout the day.

4/3/17 (got yesterday's post's date wrong) - managed a mini practice session at the course and practised 7iron chips from around the green by making it more like a putting stroke and trying to take the hinge out of my wrists. Also did some more range work on a similar line to yesterday, but with a 15mph wind into, I also worked on knockdown shots and flighting my wedges, with good success.

Currently focusing on: Key 4 - shorter backswing.

Went to the range and worked on my full swing for about an hour - focusing on address and keeping my hands inside the club on my takeaway. Got some decent changes.

Also worked on putting for about 20 minutes and chipping and pitching for about 30 minutes.

3/4: Shot a pair of 93's today. Six pars in each round and a birdie in the second. I just have a way of finding doubles (and triples the second round :-O). I hit 7 greens in the second round and had a total of 16 (n)GIRs... just couldn't recover when it counted. Had a great day though.

5/3/17 - Played 18 and with all the swing work I've been doing, it was really nice to hit the ball as well as I've ever done. Driving was a massive strength, with a high of 324 yards (slightly downwind) and most comfortably clearing 250. Most pleased with the improvement in iron play and when I get the hip bump right to start my transition, it's flying so much better. More work planned for the week ahead with the next rounds at the end of the month; it's getting there! Annoyingly, Game Golf seems to have lost the round when uploading, but I'll edit in some stats tomorrow when they show up.

Currently focusing on: Key 4 - shorter backswing.

3/5-shoulder and hip turn work only. My left wrist and right knee are sore, so I took it easy today.

3/5: Took some video of my full swing with 56o, 9-iron, and 6-iron to review later. Also spent about 10 minutes pitching balls to a bucket with my wedge and another 20 minutes practicing short chips to three different targets alternating between clubs every few shots.

Arrived to hotel and did "wall drill" for 5 minutes. Could feel tension on inside of right leg that I don't feel when doing practice swings

also feel pain in right foot that has been nagging me since January...

Did about half of hour mirror work and hitting the ball into my net. I think a found a decent feel for my downswing piece, which is trying to make my back shoulder to rotate faster.

Haven't seen this thread until now so Ill just give it a dry run for March @iacas so I get in to the habit of posting here.

Today after work I hit approx 50 balls w/ driver on the range practicing the swing plane drill pushing the ball with my path inside to out shown on my swing thread.

My short game (getting up and down, scrambling) needs work so hopefully tomorrow I'll get some pitches in because I need to practice distance control. Club's greens are being cored though so I'll see how i go, if not, practice putting on the practice green.

So, I'm out of the running for a March badge b/c I don't post same-day (I'll fix that in time for next month), but @RandallT has been gracious enough to invite me to use the thread for some self accountability.  Thus...the weekend's practice:

3/3: 10 mins. work on moving grip more neutral; 1/4 swings with wedge working on square impact position & proper hinge

3/4: 10 min. conditioning session (orange whip); 20 min. range session w/more neutral grip implemented / full swing work; walked 9 holes (practice mentality); 10 mins. chipping session; 10 mins. putting session

3/5: 5 min. grip-check session with 1/4 swings (no ball); 15 min. ~20-35y pitch session working on flighting low/mid/high trajectories
 - (I've found that I can slightly adjust my grip (mostly trail-hand) from strong -- for high trajectory/open cf pitches -- to weak, for low trajectory pitches; works very well for me...cool!)

    • In March of 1978 I got to play Pebble Beach GC. Played it from the back tees, since I knew I'd probably never play it again. Oops, shot 102.  Three weeks later, I played Torrey Pines - South, again from the back tees (maybe 6,700 yds in those days). Shot an 87, and missed a birdie putt on the lakeside No. 18 green. In 2021, I played TPC Deere Run in the Quad Cities area. This is site of the John Deere Classic. It was early October and the course was undergoing renovation, so I got to play the front nine twice for $110, lunch included. The course was great and the driving range was unbelievable. Hint: you need to pay attention to the wind drafts before you try to challenge the cross bunkers! BTW, Deere Run is a public course. Norwood Hills Country Club is site of the Champions tour event, the Ascension Charity Classic, now the Stifel Charity Classic. This classic layout has 36 holes. This summer I hope to play the West course where the Champions event is held; Missouri Golf Association is sponsoring an amateur event there.  I have played the shorter East course three times - it's quirky but quite fun. Also: Circa 2000 I played il Picciolo, a course at the base of Mount Etna in Sicily. The volcano was spewing ash that week. The course frequently hosts European pro events. Lots of elevation change and gently rippling fairways. Left a 7i shot 10 yards short of green on one par 5. Turns out the hole had a 12-foot high alpine flagstick, and I was not as close to the green as I thought I was (bad perspective).
    • Just the Plantation course at Kapalua. Not like I didn't know it, but it was a visceral reminder of how ridiculously good the tour pros are. That course is f***ing *hard* playing it from ~6500 yards. From the tips!? Then if there's wind?!
    • How far back are we talking? Like I've played Inwood on Long Island and that held a US Open back in the day (nearly 100 years ago now). Courses that have held big events recently: Shinnecock Hills Merion Bethpage Black Winged Foot West Kiawah Island Ocean TPC Sawgrass Walton Heath Old Royal St Georges Royal Liverpool The Old Course Turnberry Muirfield Kingsbarns Royal Porthcawl Phoenix Country Club A few others that have held European Tour events relatively recently, and then these ones that held big events a long time ago: Royal Cinque Ports Prestwick Princes Inwood
    • I get he thinks he can compete, but it's time to enjoy retirement. Get involved in golf in other ways. Go design hundreds of new courses. Expand the game. Maybe tee it up at the Majors from time to time. Yea, it is over.
    • Firestone North (I think it was the world series of golf at the time, but it was held on the North course one year due to maintenance needed on the South Course.) Firestone South (Bridgestone Inv) TPC Sawgrass (The Players Championship) Pine Needles (U.S. Women's Open) There might be some other ones I am not aware of, but these are ones off the top of my head.  I am probably scratching off Whistling Straights and Erin Hills later this year 😁
