4/21: Played first two rounds of the (extended) golf weekend today. Morning was just 'meh', but I played a different course in the afternoon and was on fire at the start of the round. I was 3 over through 8, when disaster struck. Well, really, my ball struck...a tree. The same tree. Twice. :~( Consecutive shots (from different angles) after a wayward drive on 9. I ended up with a quad. :cry:A mediocre back nine with a couple pars to finish with an 89. Regardless, great day playing golf. :content: Back at it in the morning. :-D

4/21:  Got to the course, today....
30 min. range session; began with checks on A2; then worked on downward strike into ball & taking divot; 8i, then 6i, then 4H
15 min. putting session; worked on squaring up at setup, then tempo (provoked by 2:1 tempo thread today)
15 min. chipping session; worked on high/pitch-style and running chips
Walked 9; was a little slow out there but no one behind me, so played 2 balls some, and spent a lot of time on and around greens working on short game
Great day to be out!

April 22nd: - 20 mins full swing practice, outdoors, 6 iron. @mvmac gave me a drill a few years ago where you pause at A2, then slowly complete the backswing. It's designed to get the correct sequencing  in that the hips don't move (much) until A2, then everything turns together to the top. This is basically my whole practice for this month.

4/22: Day two, rounds 3 & 4 of 5. Back at home and shot 87 (43/44) in the morning, with 4 doubles and a triple. Kept trying to get in trouble and was in recovery mode a lot but scraped out 5 pars and 2 birdies with several great approach shots and my best round of putting ever (29 putts!). The second birdie was a 30 footer to close out the round. ;-)

As good as that was, the afternoon was even better. My wife brought my son up to the course and they sat with me while I ate a late lunch (and my daughter stole my fries), and then my son and I played a scramble from the front tees (I used my 3-iron for tee shots). We shot a 10 over, 83 (40/43). Five straight pars to start the round, three of which were made by my son (including the first two, which were 6-foot one-putts). As we walked off the second green, I asked him if he was ever going to let me putt.

Great day. :-D

4/23/17:

About 10 minutes this morning, figuring out stance, setup and ball position with every club in my arsenal from 60° wedge up to the driver. I noticed I needed to move the ball position slightly forward so I could turn in to my shots. It works well. Most of the adjustments weren't much. An inch or two at most, the width of stance was a big adjustment, wedges and short irons was narrower than it was, mid irons a little narrower, long clubs were about right. My grip I noticed my left hand was a little weak. So I got the feeling, "I was going to throw (overhand) the club with my left hand". (I didn't throw the club I promise). Believe it or not, it's a good "feel" drill, because when you take the club to address from there, your left hand is in the proper position.

April 23 -  spent 45 minutes hitting balls into a net in the backyard. Slow swings working on impact position and body turn from the top. These are the first balls I've hit in a few weeks other than chipping.

Lots of practice time today that I made the most of...
5 mins. work facing mirror, worked on getting back to a good angle (had gotten a little too straight up recently, so was having trouble getting down on ball and taking divot)
60 mins. pitching work, 25-45 yards (90 balls hit, flag target in yard)
5 mins. wall drills w/club
30 mins. full swing work w/foam balls, focus on keeping spine angle and proper bend, slowing things down to concentrate on lagging club head into ball
Walked 9; had course to self (wet, misty day) so threw down 5-6 balls in various approach yardages, focused on same lag/divot from practice work; some extra chipping work around the greens

4/23: Welp...Golf Weekend is over.

Ended up playing two rounds again today, at a course I've only played once. Shot a pair of 91s. The first round was tough, lots of bad tee shots and misses the wrong way. Felt like I was grinding the entire round except for few sputters of decency. I finally started hitting the driver well, and the second 91 was much more enjoyable.

Time to get some rest. :-)

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
