This article is a great in depth look at the G400.

https://mygolfspy.com/2017-ping-g400-drivers-2/

A quick summary of the main points.  They changed the aerodynamics, based on the fact that the heel leads the toe of the face on the downswing, which ultimately led to a 445cc head among something else I don't know how to explain.  This size/arrangement allows greater clubhead speed on the down swing.  The other main point is sound.  I guess the engineers created a sound that is "pleasing" to hear. So, as some previous models were loud, you might instinctively flinch before impact.  But, with a more pleasing sound, you would swing through and get more speed.

I suppose this makes sense. Some years back a club company, i don't remember which, introduced a Driver that produced a sound like an aluminum bat hitting a softball! I found it quite disturbing! You heard this sound around the course for a couple of years, and then it completely disappeared! Nobody, even the users of the club, liked it.

I think several did that yeah? The Adams Redline, Cobra had a loud one, Callaway BBII was pretty loud too. Oh, and the Nike SQ series were loud. I remember that sound. You're right, it was just like an aluminum bat!

I second that emotion!

Not really on topic, but not entirely off it either, I once read an article about all the blind golfers, and blind golfer's societies and clubs extant in America. These were folks who were otherwise fully enabled except for their inability to see. Yet, they played golf with the assistance of a helper.

The author then went on to contrast this with the relative paucity of deaf golfers and deaf golfer's societies! They can see, which one might assume to be the most necessary sense to play golf, but they can't hear. And very few of them play golf! Interesting.

I'm 64, and there are sounds now absent from golf courses that I miss! Back when persimmon would contact balata, drivers sounded like rifle shots! Another sound I miss is real steel spikes crunching in gravel or clacking on concrete! You could be blind and know exactly where you were!

    • Feel like you are left side dominant. Keep the back of your glove running through impact. Keeps leading edge down without digging. You will pick them clean with some zip if the grass is nice and generally acceptable results off anything less than ideal. Works with both hingy or dead hand pitches and chips.
    • Day 52 (30 Apr 26) - Had planned a solo round, got invited to be part of trio that included a fmr mini tour pro.  Was fun playing back a set of tees and having to stay in my game plan. Both were very engaging and encouraging in the round.  A good day in working through and making smarter shot choices.
    • Day 576 - 2026-04-30 Put my playlist on and slowed down a little as things were meh. Mostly got to an exaggerated P6 and hit from there.
    • I mean, a golfer is trespassing and damaging property. So, golf rules don’t supersede state laws. 😉 Like, if it isn’t marked and is off golf property. The right thing to do is take an unplayable lie or take stroke and distance.  Also, this is a liability for the course. The homeowner could easily say the course is liable for damage done because they knowingly didn't mark their boundaries which allowed golfers to trespass and damage property.
    • Interestingly enough, if the course (the Committee in Rules terms) doesn't mark the boundaries, there is nothing out of bounds.  I realize that neighboring homeowners would take a dim view of golfers whacking balls from their backyards, but that's what the Definition of Out of Bounds requires. "All areas outside the boundary edge of the course as defined by the Committee."
