I saw this sentence in an ad for clubs at Global Golf. Really? I know WD40 and fine emery cloth will remove rust but.....Really?

NOTE: Some irons are designed to rust over time. This is not considered adverse wear.

Admittedly, I had been told that and never really questioned it. It made sense that it might somehow add friction to the clubface giving it more spin. By your response, I assume you know that to be false. :hmm:

Rust:

  • wears away the edges of the grooves
  • clogs grooves
  • is like a fine powder
  • wears away after one swing anyway

I don't like rust.  If anything for appearance I prefer chrome.

I think some just liked that the rusty surface reduced the glare especially with chrome.

Good call.  I play satin shovels anymore so...

My favorite look is a nice chrome blade.  Or a nicely finished persimmon.

Persimmon ....such a beauty. Actually the first driver I ever hit (think it was a Northwestern) I remember my dad saying, " Son you won't get to hit a finer wood than this for a long time." Learned to play with NW Thunderbird irons...criminey ....today the 2 iron looks like a domino tile tide to a stick!

Thanks. It wasn't evident to me that that (**** I hate it when a sentence forces me to say 'that that' lol) was the sentence in question.

WD-40 and an emory cloth does work... As does a solution of baking soda and vinegar with a fine stiff bristled brush.

Some materials such as carbon steel of any composition will rust. It just adds to the patina of the club in my opinion.

I actually had a set of Persimmon woods built for me back in the day! As for learning, in my youth I had a set of Sam Snead "Blue Ridge" clubs from some department store. I think the irons were swingweighted at about D-30!

Love satin.  I used Naval Jelly to strip my old Callaway x forged wedges down go a satin finish.  Rust...what's the point.

I like the look of the Vokey wedges with the "oil can" finish.  These can actually rust a tiny bit if they get put away wet, but the rust wears off after just a couple of swings.

I think I had the same clubs, the Sam Snead Blue Ridge.  I graduated to a set of Golden Ram irons at about the time Tom Watson was playing Ram, and got some Titleist woods (laminated) during my first summer home from college.  None of those were meant to rust.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
