in practice sessions off a mat into cage, I will sometimes place a broken tee head a couple of inches in front of the ball to indicate that I am making ball contact first. Every time i do this, I get great hits as the tee dissappears and I sometimes can hear both the ball and tee hit the net. However, when I try to do the same thing without the broken tee, its not as good even though I try to copy the same shot.

Okay. Look up the "aiming point" concept from TGM.

OK, I will do that.  I've a pretty good idea of what it will say. I guess the visual aid helps in practice, but I need to carry it over to actual play.

I did in fact look aiming point up. Pretty revealing. Something I need to work on.  I belieive I have pretty good lag, but this places another dynamic into the process. I will have to see if I can do it by focusing on some natural object in front of the ball such as particular blade of grass e.t.c.  Ball placement is yet another aspect and correlates to stance at set up with the different length of clubs.  I wonder how this effects those who opt to go with the "same length" clubs?

Looked this up after reading your post.  I am going to get the ebook and read it, it is making me think really hard AND as a bonus the concept has solidified what my wife has been stating for the last 3 years.  "Golf is physics and geometry" thus giving us more to talk about concerning this crazy game.  That makes me happy, the more she is involved with golf the more fun it is for me.  This type of thinking though feels foreign to me and I am very intrigued.  Thank you for sharing, what maybe old to one is new to another.

If you're saying you're buying TGM, don't.

It WAS good but is very outdated. If you're gonna buy a book to read to help you with golf…

Regarding golf instruction books.  Many are good reads, Hogan, Nicklaus, Player and can be helpful, but also you have to realize that they were written when technology was not as it is today and most were trying to relate to their own "feels".  What they thought they were doing was not what was actually happening. One often quoted example would be Faldo's demo for curving a ball, he did practically the opposite of what he was saying. OTOH, books like Hogan's Five Fundamentals is considered one of the best in terms of his delivery of what he was trying to  accomplish. The golf swing has evolved considerably since then as has equipment, balls, and courses. I can not comment on LSW having not yet read it,  but from what people have stated it is an excellent resource for overall relevance.

Buy it. Read it. Even if you don't change one facet of your swing, you will still learn how to score better.

Thanks, I will stay away from TGM per your advice.  I will be getting LSW though :-)

I've played a lot of golf looking a couple inches in front of the ball rather than at it and find that I hit the ball better that way. It is pretty much the TL;DR of Bobby Clampett's The Impact Zone, or at least moving the lowpoint forward is.

In reading the article(s) regarding Aiming Point, I believe there are a couple of different ways to achieve the same thing.

1. relationship of the aiming point to a fixed ball position

2. Relationship of ball position to a fixed aiming point

The idea being to have the ideal aiming point before/after the ball position but as pertaining to club length. Hand speed not withstanding.

For consistency, it occurs to me that you can have an exact aiming point which is a constant, but position the ball accordingly to the length of the club. This way, you know precisely where to place the ball in your stance. Its all about relativity. Stance - ball position - aiming point.   The difficulty is finding that aim point consistently. Of course there are other factors, such as width of stance as a determinate factor on ability to achieve a proper turn.

Why such overthink? You're a 20 handicap, man! That's worse than bogey! Just learn grip, stance, alignment, and give the ball a swat! Don't overthink things! All you'll do is screw yourself up. Just learn to hit the goddamn ball!

I've read excerpts of TGM and it reads like an engineering text book. Not worth it, and I'm an engineer!

I've read LSW three times now though!
