Hi all! My first post!

I only started playing a few months ago and as such I am finding myself in the rough for most of the time I am on the course!

Just wondering what tips people can offer? Wether it is deep or shallow rough? Long or short range all tips would be welcome!

Thanks

What is the rough you are talking about, we only hit fairways here!

I kid, of course. The advice I would give is that all rough is created differently. Depending on the grass, some is not horrible, and some is miserable. Assuming you are playing out of the miserable stuff, most times I find the grass wraps around the hosel and pulls my ball left. Also, if the ball is sitting down, you won't get much spin, so it's going to roll for days.

Welcome to the site and more importantly, welcome to a great game. You will find alot of good stuff here.

Yeah, like what dzclarkcpa was saying, alot depends on the grass and the setup of the course. So many different variables come into play and it really just takes experience to learn how to play out of the rough. If you know a grass range that has some thicker grass on it, practice some there and see what it does to your ball flight and distances.

But generally, the more of the back of the ball you can see, the better you'll be able to control it. That doesn't always mean you'd able to hit your normal full swing shot, but it could mean you can play it differently with reasonable control.

Don't overthink. Open the club face a bit (or a lot)  and swing hard. Don't know your ability and the thickness of this rough but you will figure out quickly how much you need to open. Thicker rough = opener face.

Hit it straighter in the fairway? :-D jk jk... but really.

I usually go up a club for my distance left to the green, but you also have to recognize when you might catch a flier lie, where the ball jumps out of the rough hotter than you expect to, and for those ones where I think I might catch a flier, I stay with the normal club I would hit for that distance.
