Does anyone do "Overspeed" training at the range?

This is from another thread I started:

"That kind of brings up another point. I'm also wondering about if people generally do some "over speed" training? Do many people swing faster on some strikes just to "strengthen" the muscles in the swing?"

Does anyone else try to swing faster and faster on the range just hitting balls?

Does anyone actively incorporate any other form of "Speed Training" into their range session? If so, what?

I remember that @mvmac was doing some swing speed training a while back.

You can also search for overspeed and find a few others

I've been doing this same system for a couple months.  I've seen noticeable gains for me.  But as has been mentioned before, I do think you need to continue to do it to maintain the increase.  It's worth it IMO to pick up a few more yards.  Just playing around with the radar and seeing how fast I can swing has been interesting when doing the training.

The only time I go to the range is to work on my driver. The rest of my practicing I do at home in the cage.

My driver routine at the range is warm up, do some "chips" with the driver trying to shape the shot, full drives trying to keep the ball inside the imaginary fairway, then the last 20 or so balls I hit the ball as far as I can, I don't care where they go just swing as fast as I can.

I find that getting the flights on the irons is just as important as driver.

I tend to progress through all my clubs, but I can see this as being as effective.

One of the biggest things I am trying to improve is distance off the tee as well as accuracy, my driver distance has steadily gone up over the last few years, from 160 avg off the tee to 215 currently. I would like to get up to 260ish off the tee, because the game is so much easier when you hit wedges into greens.  The other thing I'm trying to improve is chipping and putting, as those were the areas I could lose the most strokes quickly.

I'd guess that the fact that you hit 55 yards farther off the tee now is likely the process of improved mechanics? If you feel that your mechanics are sound, I would go ahead and start speed training.

Using myself as an example, my mechanics have also improved a lot in the last 3 months and got me to the distances I like. If I continue to swing at 100% or more, I might or might not get faster? Well, wither way, I think I'm also going to do over speed training more consciously in the near future to prevent injuries.

One of my "range buddies" recently confessed to having been an instructor at Rancho Park GC. I never knew he was an instructor, but it makes sense given he hits really straight off the tee and all his balls go really straight. He told me that he swings as fast as he possibly can to get what little distance "he has left". He still carries 220 yards and runs the ball a consistent 30 yards, so he's not that short a hitter. He's almost 70 years old and had two surgeries for something in the inner ear. So his balance is not so good, but he can still play in the single digits. So, even though he has impeccable mechanics, he still swings as fast as he can and gets good distance. There's definitely hope for you reaching your goal of 260 yards.

He said that everyone should be swinging as fast as they possibly can all the time, and that made some sense.

Over speed training is the act of swinging faster than you can at the present time. I think this builds muscle tone. Your legs get stronger, your torso and everything involved in the swing gets more tone. Guessing that this also can involve swinging out of your shoes to build tone? @NM Golf, said it would not be a good idea for him to do it, but that's possibly because he's possibly at maximum tone? The main thing is not to get injured to do this.

Swing with everything else relaxed, and please don't get injured.

That's huge. How did you get those extra yards?

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

This seems to have some good suggestions for actual speed increase.

This kind of tells you that you can maximize your club head speed just by optimizing your sequence.

This is something my clinic instructor told us to do. Back swing even slower to get more speed. Most of us were able to see increased distances almost immediately.

The reason for this is there is no reason for the back swing to move so quickly. Moving fast here does nothing to increase your club head speed at impact and throws off your sequence and possibly puts your body into a bad position.

Mostly swing changes, but I still need to make a lot but also stretching, range sessions where I swing as fast as I can, since I got a mevo I use that to see how fast each swing is.

I still have a lot to work on in my swing so I have not done "overswing" training, I have the super speed golf system I just have not used it much yet because I feel like until I get my swing in a good place I will just be re-enforcing bad mechanics.

I googled Mevo and see an expensive camera - not a golf tool.  How does that measure swing speed?

"Flightscope mevo" might be a better goolge search phrase.

$500?

I fear one bad shank and it's gone! LOL

It would have to be on the back swing. The unit sits behind the ball about 4-8 feet.
