Callaway MD3 Wedge or Cleveland RTX-3?

  1. 1. I can get either one of these for basically half off retail price and I need a 50 degree wedge. Which one should I pick?

Like the poll says, I can get either one of those wedges for basically half-off retail price from Dicks. They are both the same price. I currently dont have a 50 degree wedge. My 56 is a cheap, off brand wedge, and my lob wedge is the MD3 PM grind wedge. I like how that one hits and feels, but the reviews of the RTX-3 are fantastic and I like how it looks as well.

I looked at the SM6 and the MD Forged wedge but I dont think its worth the extra money for minimal technology gain for either of those.

If you were me, which one would you get?

I'd get an SM6, because I like the Vokeys.

You should get the one you like and think you'll play best with.  It'd be hard to argue with the MD3 that you already have and like...

I would say go with the MD3, but I'm biased (see my sig line ;-)).

My MD3 48/8 is a standard sole, but really moves smoothly through the turf. I suspect you might find the 50/10 similar. Do you know anyone who has the MD3 50* who would let you hit a few with it?

Unfortunately I dont know anyone with a MD3 50*. My buddy has the MD3 60 degree which is what lead me to getting my MD3 60 in the first place. I do think I will go with the MD3 50* and then in the spring replace my 56 with MD3 as well so I will have a matching set then.

I'd get the MD3 since you have one already and you like it. My own wedges are a mixed bag right now, but I prefer them to have the same look and feel.

Alternatively, you can buy them both and send me the one you like the least ;-)

The Callaway MD3 looks nice, indeed, can't go wrong with either, I say.

I'm hoping to eventually purchase the Callaway Mack Daddy PM Wedge, to be my kind of go to, 1 stop shop for wedges, very beautiful club.

I love the PM Wedge as my lob wedge. Numerous times I have done chips/pitches from greenside rough and when I look at the clubface after hitting the ball, the ball//grass mark is out on the toe, which still caught grooves because of the PM grind where a normal lob wedge doesnt have the grooves that extend out. you should be able to purchase a slightly used one for under $75. Mine was around $50 I believe and it was in great condition.

For the 50* gap/approach wedge it will be like 95% full swing shots from 110-125 yards out so I prefer the more normal appearance of the regular MD3 for that.

I also like the SM6 (see my sig), but since you own and like the MD PM, I would go with the MD3-if I were you.

I have never owned a 60*; I am eyeing the PM myself.

This IS sort of funny...asking us.  What do YOU like?  U can hit them in the SIM at Dicks or anywhere else.  What looks good to your eye at address?

All of the newer wedges have plastic wrapping on them at my local Dicks and Golf Galaxy which makes them pointless to him into the simulator. I guess my question was more intended to hear the thoughts of people that have played with one or the other or both clubs.

That's lousy, my Golf Galaxy has a ton of Clubs to hit.  I was actually hitting an md3 to compare to my pm grind.

The ones they have that I can hit are used models of drivers and wedges, sometimes single irons too. Its hit or miss on the used drivers/wedges. Sometimes there will be newer model stuff, sometimes itll be junk.

That's odd.  When I was club shopping (Dick's, Sports Authority, Golf Town) they would tape the face and bottom of just about anything I wanted to hit.

Try that approach.... say I am here to buy X or Y club.  Can I hit them?

Agreed. All we can do is give you information on our experiences with the 2 wedges you mention.

Honestly @klineka I voted for the MD3 because you mentioned having a 60° wedge... It's better to have a good matched set of wedges than three of different brands and models.

But as @iacas implied in the quoted post, the decision is entirely yours.

I personally have ZERO experience with the MD3, I can tell you if your looking for a wedge you can hit full the RTX-3 is honestly just ok. I demoed a 54°, and didn't really care for the RTX-3 wedges... Didn't really like the feel either. Distance wise, it will fill the gap. But feel wise, not a fan.

I may change my clubs, and woods, to a different brand. But I'll always carry Cleveland wedges.

Titleist Vokey is a close 2nd choice.

In my bag Driver: Cleveland CG tour black Fairway Woods: Diablo Octane 3 wood; Diablo 5 wood Irons: Mizuno MP53 5-9 Hybrid: Cobra 3, 4 T-Rail Wedge: 46* Cleveland, 50* Cleveland, 54* Titleist, 60* Titleist Putter: Odyssey protype #6 Ball: Maxfli U4/U6... But I'm not really picky about the ball I use.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
