Day 537:

One of those days where I felt completely unmotivated to do anything - physically and mentally exhausted. Finally scraped myself off the couch and did some indoor bead putting practice, and some backswing work with LVP camera.

I did some pitching/chipping practice today focusing on hinge and hold.

Day 104.  Wind down after work, 30 minutes in the golf practice room.  Setup, slow backswing, stop at the right spot, reset, after three good backswings, take a fourth and swing forward.  Again, the whole thing is slow.

Day 1 (8 Jun 21) - streak broken (missed more than 2 days of posts in the last 28) so starting over....pitches with the 54* from varied distances and lies with the goal to get the ball to land and check quickly.  Distances were from 5yds up to 30 (about max in my yard).

Day 65 (6/08/21) - Went to the range today:

  • Warmed up with some chips on the putting green and partial wedge shots on the range,
  • Hit 20 balls with a 8-iron, mostly partial swings, with a noodle set at 45* to discourage/prevent/re-educate my over the top move,
  • Hit 12 Drivers full swing trying to maintain the feeling from the noodle drill, and
  • Finished with a few shots from the practice bunker. 

Good practice session overall...short and focused.

Day Fourteen, June 8, 2021

Hit some shots with a slower feeling arm swing... that actually went farther... What the hell, I hit 60°, 54°, AW, 8i, 6i, 4i.... oh and I worked on my posture and widening my swing radius.

Day 528 - June 8, 2021

Practiced downtown for 15-20 minutes before a lesson. Really felt some good flow with a much "less" arm action.

Day 538:

Did some swing mapping for downswing with LVP camera, and then hit some balls outside. Think I might have found a good feel for clubface control during downswing.

Day 105.  I didn't get the same length of wind-down as I got yesterday, but after work today I did get ten minutes of slow 7-iron swings, with the aim of slow to the top, making the top at a better place than it was a week ago, do that a few times and then hit the ball also on a slow swing, as if I were trying to send it 75 yards on a full 7-iron.  Swings are slow, I don't think I'm getting it as slow as 75 yards though.

Day 2 (9 Jun 21) - Pitch drills today using the PW.  Was initially sloppy in the ball striking, "felt" completely out of sync.  Consistently thinned a good number of the shots, so I stepped back, slowed down and decreased the swing to about 1/2 swing to work on mechanics.  By the end of the drill ball was much better coming off the club.  While not a great day, it was a good day.

Day 1 - more grip work x 30mins or so. In addition to getting several videos and photos correcting my grip, I still haven’t quite gotten it right…but I do feel that I’ve had a break through in my understanding of what I should be doing….

Day 539:

Worked on new my downswing clubface control feel with 3W and 5-iron, and seems to be working well. Start line and launch angle are good. We'll see about curvature in tomorrow's lesson.

Also did a "Bryson" speed training session with 7-iron using swing speed instead of ball speed. Got a max of 103 MPH with 7-iron, but wasn't able to reach a new max after that. Average for me is probably 92-94 MPH.

    • I was at a golf clinic yesterday with Trevor Immelman and he answered a question about which is better. His take was that you need both. Block practice is for working on something specific.    p.s. I’m curious if the question asked is on here. 
    • Day 438 - 2025-12-12 Did a little work with the Swingyde. Backswing can actually be a little tiny bit less rolled now, which is a good thing. I'm doing a good job of not really doing the wrist stuff.
    • Unless I'm misunderstanding something (plausible) the whole point is that that is not block practice. At least not in the terms used in the study that said block practice doesn't help much.
    • Who said block practice was mindless? If you are trying to practice a 150-yard draw, 200 times. That isn't mindless. Yuou miss one right more than yo want you adjust. It isn't mindless.  Me practicing how my right hip moves in the backswing over and over again isn't mindless.  Yes, block practice is specifically doing something over and over again. It has its benefit because it can be something so specific you need to work on that it gives you the sheer volume in repetitions you need to go from novice to beginner or slightly competent. You then can go on from there to non-block practice to become proficient.  I disagree with this. If you are hitting a 7-iron to a green over and over, and if the intent is to hit the best shot you can, then that is block practice. You make little adjustments each time even if you are not thinking about them. Though, you can think about them and still call it block practice.  Again, if you know you push one just right, you make an adjustment either subconsciously or consciously. Then you hit the next one, it is right on target. Your brain locks in that as what you want it to be.  Block practice isn't defined as mindless. 
    • I guess if you're just mindlessly standing there dragging a ball over and hitting it at a green then maybe, but when I go to the range, I'm always taking feedback on what happened and adjusting what I'm doing (very slightly) to change clubface or strike point or whatever else. I suppose if I hit it absolutely perfect, I might try to change nothing, but I'm not sure I've ever hit it perfectly twice in a row.  But that kind of fine tuning I would have thought a month ago was block practice since my goal is the same with the same club and same target for each shot. I was thinking that might be not ideal based on the science that said block practice isn't as good, but now it seems that's not what those scientists meant when they said block practice and the practice I typically do is just fine.  I think it's a semantic issue where misunderstanding what the studies were actually doing is affecting how the outcome of the studies is being interpreted by lay people (like me). So: - block practice is doing the same thing over and over - block practice is not as good as variable practice - me a month ago: going to the range and hitting 7 iron to the same green is doing the same thing over and over therefore the practice I'm doing needs to change - me now: oh - actually hitting that 7 iron to the same green over and over, but making little adjustments each time is not block practice, so therefore the practice I'm doing is fine
