My home course has a lot of green side bunkers with thin sand.  I carry a Titlest SM6 58/12 as my only wedge (aside from PW and gap, which I use as 10i and 11i). The bounce is great for the edges of the traps where sand is reliably deep, but I can get a nasty surprise anywhere else.  I’m thinking of dropping in another wedge with less bounce just for sand play ... would appreciate your thoughts on this situation ...

I usually play better courses but one, Shorecliffs in San Clemente, has mostly dirt in their sand bunkers. I have a Mizuno 60° with factory 5° of bounce. I took a file to that so it is a little less. I play that square to the ball & attack a bit more vertically & enter dirt/sand about 1/2" to 3/4" behind the ball keeping my lower hand - Palm up thru the shot. Works very nice. Hope this helps.

When I hit a rain soaked bunker, or one with thin sand (your feet will tell you) I just usually open up the face of my PW and have at it! Works for me.

If I were the OP,  I'd probably not get a new wedge, and just open up my PW, or AW.

On hard packed sand conditions I have a very low bounce LW I sometimes use.

I see alot watered down, sun baked bunkers out here.

Thanks for the advice! Before springing for a new wedge, I will try my AW with the face open and with it closed to see what gets the better result for me. The thin sand problem is the result of overwatering the greens. If I would just stop hitting into them it wouldn’t be a problem 😀

I have Edel wedges, with the trapper grind. All of my wedges have 16 degrees or more bounce. I have no issue with thin sand, and actually prefer to hit out of thin sand. It's also the technique used as well.

You're likely hitting too far behind the ball, @easyjay39402.

I hit too far behind the ball out of a bunker. How do you hit closer? Is it a ball position issue?

Put the ball forward… but your weight really forward. :-) Then… just hit the sand an inch or so behind the ball, instead of further behind it.

I was hoping for an easy answer 😉

I definitely play the ball forward, but I'd say my weight is pretty even. That's probably the issue.

I don't really think about where the club enters the sand TBH. I just swing and wherever it hits, it hits. I'm mostly just happy to get it out in one swing without blading it, which I'm ok at doing.

Find a range or practice area that has a bunker that you can practice from. Sand shots aren't really that hard once you practice them!

    • Thank you.  I'll cross it off the list since it isn't going to achieve what I want.
    • While it does turn out that both Tiger and Phil are less squeaky clean than I previously believed, I don't think golf quite has the worst in professional sports.  Or maybe they're better at image management.   Obviously I'm not fond of Phil's issue we're discussing in this thread (or his involvement with LIV) or Tiger's choices of how to drive.  I used to really like Dustin Johnson and, even before the LIV situation, we started to hear rumors that he bought more snow than Seward, although I don't think those stories were ever substantiated.  Meanwhile, I did think of Anthony Kim as the "good, bad boy" of the tour for a while fifteen years ago because of his party persona -- and if it turns out the worst he did was show up hung over to play (barring what one thinks of LIV), that's pretty good.  And I'm still happy he found a way to get his life clean. If we contrast that with some other sports I enjoy, I'm sure we could find a nice long list of NFL players that, at one point in my life, I was quite fond of, we get far worse disappointments (to put it mildly).
    • Answering that properly would land me in hot water, so I'm not going to. I don't think that many people would do that. I think that in certain circumstances many people would be willing to overlook someone doing that. But I was really referring to what I assumed was Tiger's transgressions (cheating on his wife) not Phil's.
    • No! Is a large part of the human population selfish, apathetic and cuts corners in the name of self-preservation 'more than they would like to admit', yes. Degenerate, scum, etc?.. no!! Most humans/men would not grope a woman like Phil is accused of doing (I think he absolutely did). That is scum. I mean what % of men do you think would do that? Seriously??
    • I don't think that is true at all. That is off-topic here, I think.
