It was actually more than half a ball over the whole, so based on that I think a small proportion would have been below the rim.

I seem to have quoted Cantankerish by mistake there.  Not sure how to adjust it.

In the video, the flag is oscillating and each time the flag moves back towards the centre, the ball rolls (very slightly) towards the hole.  Does that not confirm that the balance is shifted towards the flag and therefore partially below ground level?

If you have a video showing part of the ball crossing the plane, that's another story. I made my judgment based off the picture you posted earlier.

Is it possible to post the video to this thread?  It is 15MB in size.

https://www.youtube.com/upload

I suspect what I'll take away from the video is that the edge of the hole is rounded down slightly, but I still won't see any of the ball below the lip of the hole.

The cup is pretty well worn without a clear "corner."

Ok, that should work now.

Wow, that's really close.  At least now you've read the actual rule, so the next time you hit one like that you'll know how to evaluate it.  @iacas is right, its possible for the ball to be touching the flag, and still not fit the definition of being "holed", and that one may just fit that description.

Yeah, the video shows what I thought it would. Nice birdie.

Blame the cup or the flagstick or whomever put it back like that.

Also we create the legal fiction here that the ball is at rest because it's overhanging the hole and you've been there for > 10 seconds.

  • iacas changed the title to Is This a Hole in One?

if even a minute portion of the centerline of ball is past the edge of the hole, then a part of the ball has to be blow the surface

if the ball rocks in and out with the flag, then it has to be leaning, not sitting.  problem with that is if the edge of the hole is not tidy, it could be outside and still leans towards the hole.

so you have to look at it and see if the center of the ball is actually past the edge of the 'true' hole

The edge of the hole could be rounded down slightly. It's not exactly a crisp cup.

Tap-in birdie.

I had already revised my post to consider that.  good point.  takes into account what your earlier graphic didn't show.  but now we have a ball that is lower than the lip, but not 'over' the edge of the hole.....Blue is a no, green is a yes.  Even though both would rock in and out with the flag moving.  Both would fall if the flag was removed.

then that flag is literally keeping the ball from rolling in.  in or out, great shot

err....not to scale

For me, what you should have done was straightened out the pin.  If it dropped in with the pin straight, that is a hole in one.  If not, birdie

What's in the bag

  • Taylor Made r5 dual Draw 9.5* (stiff)
  • Cobra Baffler 4H (stiff)
  • Taylor Made RAC OS 6-9,P,S (regular)
  • Golden Bear LD5.0 60* (regular)

That's not correct.

Not in 2019.

I should have done it this way:

"If any part of the ball is in the hole below the surface of the putting green"  that's 2 factors to be met....

In the hole = between the red lines

below the surface = below the purple line

The OPs putt has to satisfy both simultaneously, some part of the ball has to be in the (white and blue) rectangle below that purple line.....

    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
