I'm going to do a little interview with golf writer Shane Ryan (Grantland, Golf Digest, he wrote that piece about Patrick Reed's past a few months ago, he does a golf podcast called The Friends of Tiger, etc.), who wrote a book called Slaying The Tiger about the young players breaking through over the 2014 PGA Tour season. I'm about 2/3rds of the way through the book (which comes out in June). It's been a very good read so far. It's sort of like if The Greatest Game Ever Played was written in 1914 and didn't involve Shia LaBeouf (so far!). I think a lot of TSTers will like it. If anyone has any questions about the book or the podcast or Patrick Reed or anything related to the PGA Tour, post it!

I'd be curious if he thinks Patrick Reeds "Top 5" comment has helped, hurt or not impacted his success.  I'd also like to know what (beyond airing out some dirty laundry) the goal of his article on Patrick Reed was, i.e. does he not like the guy or was he just offering his version of TMZ for golf.

I like the cover. McIlroy is literally inside Tiger's head. Deliberate?

Using that thought process, does that makes Reed the other "head".

While researching for the book what was something he found interesting but didn't have the time to write about it?

I have a lot of questions that I'm guessing he won't want to answer, haha.

  1. Who were your least favorite/most favorite golfers as you were writing the book?
  2. How much backlash do you expect because of this book (because of, for example, allegations about Reed, and I think you've hinted about stuff about Dubuisson on your podcast as well)?

I'll probably think of more.

No direct questions, but that book looks fun and I hadn't heard of the podcast. I'm adding the latter to my podcast list as soon as I figure out how to do so.

I'm just wondering when this slaying occurred.  I remember Jack slaying Arnie over a period of years.  I remember both Watson and Trevino slaying Jack a couple of times each.  As in taking him on at or near his best and beating him.

And I remember Tiger winning more times than any of these guys just 2 years ago.

This isn't a slaying.  It well might be and probably IS a changing of the guard, but it is more a case of the new guard outlasting the old guard than taking it on and beating it.

But putting the word Tiger in the title probably increases sales.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

1.  What do the players think about the caddie lawsuit?

2.  What players are known for taking advantage of the "gray" area in the rules?

3.  If a player had to bet 1/2 his net worth on whether Tiger wins another major, how many do you thing would actually bet "yes"

4.  Do players really care about who their playing partners on any given day?  Are there any players that guys hate getting paired with?

Gotta run, but have more.......

Round Two...........

1.  What in the heck has happened to Hunter Mahan?

2.  Dustin Johnson was suspended by the Tour -- true or false?

3.  How much time does the average tour player practice per "non-tournament-round" day?

4,  Name a player who has more talent but has gotten less out of his career than Geoff Ogilvy

    • It’s winter here and time hitting at my indoor place.  This year I bought and sold a few sets so I didn’t settle in on anything. For this coming season, starting now I have a choice to make.  What set would you guys use? 1.  Nike Vapor Pro irons - They are like new, hit them some last year before I had to demo other sets.  I love them, original grips, barely used so I’m almost not wanting to use them to keep their value up.  Standard LLL and standard grips. 2. Taylormade P7TW irons - Still in the box.  Got them over a year ago but had too much to hit, never used them.  Have used a set in the past and loved them.  Ended up with my own set custom fit to me -1/4”, 1 degree flat midsize grips.  These are probably not as valuable because they are still available and they are fit to me. I hate to put the Nikes away but it makes more sense to save them than the TW’s…. I dunno….
    • Day 215 (3 Dec 24) - Another very chilly day - opted to work on easy pitches in the backyard. Worked thru the irons and wedges - focused on foot position and tempo.
    • Yes. I believe in using the same ball all of the time, including chipping and putting practice. I use the orange Callaway Supersoft.  Only $25 per dozen, and sometimes on sale for $20.
    • A 5400 yd course is not that short for gents driving it 160 yards considering the approach shot lengths they are going to be faced with on Par 4s.  Also, for the course you are referring to I estimate the Par 4s have to average longer than 260 yds, because the Par 5s are 800 yds or so, and if there are four Par 3s averaging 130 the total is 1320 yds.  This leaves 4080 yds remaining for 12 Par 4s.  That is an average of 340 per hole. Anyway, if there are super seniors driving it only 160ish and breaking 80 consistently, they must be elite/exceptional in other aspects of their games.  I play a lot of golf with 65-75 yr old seniors on a 5400 yd course.  They all drive it 180-200 or so, but many are slicers and poor iron players.  None can break 80. I am 66 and drive it 200 yds.  My average score is 76.  On that course my average approach shot on Par 4s is 125 yds.  The ten Par 4s average 313 yds.  By that comparison the 160 yd driver of the ball would have 165 left when attempting GIR on those holes.
