The truth behind distance.....Do you have to be fit and work out?

72 posts in this topic

Everyone wants to hit it farther......Other than hitting the center of the face and finding the right golf driver. How can you hit it farther.

Truth is swing faster..not harder.  And practice swinging fast.  Typically when golfers try to crush it or bomb it deep, they try to swing hard and end up swinging slower.

This is easier said than done...But when you are loose you can swing fast.

I personally have tried this on a swing speed radar. And every time I can get in the mindset of swinging loose I can increase my club head speed by 3 mph.

Other than staying loose. Getting fit is really the only way to hit it farther.  Core strength, forearm strength and overall power. Which takes time in the gym and time at the driving range.  Maximize your equipment, swing loose and get fit.

Come on Bomb Tech, just state your new new driver will produce 15 more yards like all the other manufactures claim.

Read the review by Jamo and wish you best of success in promoting your new driver.

Hope to see your driver in my area so I can bang a few.

I'm really getting too old to spend my time in the gym.

Besides, I still hit if further than most young guns at my club...........

Having a positive angle of attack doesn't hurt ;-)

What about mechanics? There are two datasets published on this site. One came via Hank Haney - showing a correlation between increased clubhead speed and a lower handicap. The other from Iacas - correlating "Key mastery" with index.

If you put both sets of data together - I think you'd want to conclude that improving your swing in terms of Keys should also result in improved clubhead speed.

I think this is an interesting debate - since there seem to be reputable teachers out there who maintain that clubhead speed is still more innate to the golfer than improveable.

There is no doubt, that mechanics will increase club head speed and lower your scores.  Mechanics and the golf swing is everything.  I do agree that some golfers just start are faster, regardless of level of fitness.

But if you dedicated your self to getting fit and getting fast, anyone can make some speed gains.

I see good unfit golfers that are long hitters every week. It's not about their fitness or equipment.

If you already make the most out of your technique, cost benefit of fitness makes more sense.

But folks, better golf is probably minor compared to the things that fitness brings. Feeling better about yourself, more energy/fights depression, more brainpower/creativity, staving off various diseases and all the stuff associated with getting old, get sick less often, etc... If golf is what gets you to exercise, by all means harness it.

It depends how you define and measure fitness. You could be looking at someone who couldn't run a lap of a track - but how do you know that their physique isn't highly adapted to the specific act of generating clubhead speed (and downing beer and pizza)

Since I started working out every day, I've gained about 40 yards in distance on my driver. Having said that, I have also been playing more golf.

Good job! Can you put a figure on the clubhead speed that you think you gained from better fitness?

Define Long Hitter....

Long hitter....I would say 320 or longer.. is long...But consistently long is a different story.  I would rather be 270 middle of the fairway all day, than 320 out of bounds or in trouble.

Would you say that there is a ceiling though? People will see gains in clubhead speed, but 320 isn't obtainable by everyone, is it? Some just have natural power, IMO. That said, we can all improve our mechanics to maximize efficiency and energy transfer in our own swings. Realize our own potential, so to speak. I think some people focus too much on distance and not enough on golf.

Billchao,

Yes.. some people are naturally faster.... but what is your maximum potential??

Don't know, but I'll keep working and maybe I'll find out someday.

I am stretching every day now. Especially pecs. Allows me to turn more fully without so much resistance. Has made big difference. Still focusing on mechanics instead of trying to put too much mustard into the swing. Effortless old man swing. Good for 225 straight. NHave found that I get the extra yards with timing the wrist snap properly but I do not try to hit any harder. Well timed wrist snap with easy swing will land ball around 250. I could hit the weights more. I could work out longer. But what will that accomplish? It will probably make me try to hit harder then the mechanics are out the window. Then 60 yrs are lost off to the right I could work out harder. Hit the weights more. But then what is going to happen?? Yep. I will probably try to hit harder. Mechanics then out the. window.
