Do you use a glove while putting?

Simple question. I am new to the game and I have always noticed my friends leave their gloves on while they putt while the pros remove their gloves when they are putting. Does it really matter? My putting stinks and I haven't noticed a difference either way.

What do you guys do?

And the "greens" at a lot of places (*cough* Edwin Watts) basically funnel your ball into the hole so you're thinking "MAN I putt well with this thing!"

I try to remember to take mine off approaching the green and leaving it off until I get to the next tee box. Most of the time though, I forget and therefore, my left hand is whiter than the rest of my arm! I don't see any difference as far as my putting goes whether I leave it on or take it off; I should experiment and see if it does make a difference.

When I picked up golf in 1986 I remember watching Jack Nicklaus putting with his glove on so I just kept it on and havn't changed since.

You can talk to a slice, but a hook doesn't listen.

14 clubs and some beer on ice...

I've tried it both ways. I'm a crappy putter so I didn't notice much difference, but my friend who is a single digit handicap says he has better feel without a glove.

I take mine off, but mainly just so I don't have as much of a tan line

I used to putt with my glove on but then i began taking it off and i have much more feel with it off. With the golve on it seemed like i didn't have a good connection with the putter.

i used to have it on now i take it off. i am putting somuch better. whether it is a placebo or something, it has helped.

I always remove mine.

Since you don't mind leaving it on, it's one less thing to do (distraction) as you reach the green (marking your ball, fixing ball marks, reading the green, pulling the flag, cleaning your ball, etc.). As you learn the game, you'll see that it's easy to remove it once you pull the putter out of the bag. Soon it will become habit. Leave it on for now.

When it comes to something as mystical as putting, pros are likely to follow each other's example "just because". I'm sure they will tell you they prefer the better feel of no glove, but there's no way for anyone to prove whether it actually helps performance. It's definitely the popular way to do things though, and if it helps your confidence then it's already better than most putting tips.

Myself, I wear two gloves when playing (helps my grip and keeps my hand from getting torn up) and I leave them on to putt, mostly out of convenience. I'm very confident in my putting. If I used one glove I would probably take it off during putting, just because my hands sweat in hot weather and I need to cool them off. Might as well be when putting.

Until this year, I had always left my glove on while putting. I made it a point to go with no glove from the start of this season and I have been putting better this year than I ever have. I don't know if I can contribute all the success to going gloveless, but I think it certainly helped some.

I have done it both ways, as far as I can tell the only advantage for me is it gives a little time for sweat dry out. I have left it on for years now. I consider myself a good putter and very feel oriented. Arms, shoulders, sound all contribute to feel. I wonder if people with the yips might be better off with it on, since sensory overload seems to be part of that problem.

I take it off to putt, mostly because it feels nice to get some cool air on my hand during a hot day.

I take my glove off after my approach shot to any green...basically if I have less than 40 yards to the hole, the glove is in the back right pocket!

      after some years experimenting around, I've settled on a mixed bag of mostly Pat Simmons vintage Tiger Sharks (the ones with the blue enamal on back of the clubheads): 3 thru 9 iron, + 3 wedges (PW, sand, chipper). Those super heavy clubheads really help me get my swing down and thru the ball. Also I carry an old Taylor 18-degree rescue club, 17-degree and 14 degree ImagineGolf metalwoods, and the famous Pat Simmons "alien" 1-iron. Finally a real brick-on-a-stick, the big-headed Bettinardi Ben Hogan model putter which is excellent for taking the break out of short putts and getting the ball hole high on long ones. Wait....is that 15 clubs? Oh well....

      this topic brought to mind one my favorite golf-spectator memories. Back when, living in Santa Barbara CA, parked in my yellow cab just behind the 10th tee  (c. 380 yard par 4) at SB Muni golf course while eating lunch. A twosome comes by, and first up is this fat little mexican guy who takes a kinda squirelly practice swing, then addresses the ball and bashes a long, high, perfectly straight drive up to w/in about 5 yards of the green. Other guy is dressed to the 9's, pulls out what looks like a $300 driver....and hits a maybe 150-yard pop fly. Slams clubhead to the ground and yells, "it's fat! It's fat! Everything is fat today!!"  And that's how I learned what a "fat" shot is.

      It may not be surprising that in the previous 7,064 posts, this particular point has been discussed. To which I will counter: If we're talking about results, why only the majors? Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
