4 Wood instead of 3 and 5?

Does anyone use that setup? I have 2 clubs in my bag that I hit around the same distance (3 hybrid and 5 wood), and I'm not happy with my 3 Wood right now. I was thinking about replacing 2 with 1, and just finding a great hitting 4 wood.

Suggestions?

Absolutely. I couldn't get 3w airborne. 4w gave me better distance. I'm actually experimenting with no FWs at all and using a 19.5* hybrid instead of the 4w, as those two also go about the same for me (210-220) but the hybrid is a little easier to control for me.

Driver: Cleveland Classic 270, 10.5*
Fairway Woods: Adams Speedline LP (3 & 5)
Hybrids: Wilson Staff Fybrids 21*, 24*, UST V2 stiff
Irons: Callaway X-20 Tour, 5-PW, Rifle Project-X (flighted) 6.0
Wedges: Cleveland CG15 DSG 52* & 58* +/- 56* Niblick

Putter: Yes! Amy

I replaced my 3&5 with a 4 for the same reason you did. I have a 17° SQ 4-Wood, similar to drglew's. Mine is the square shape. I've been very happy with Nike's woods, ever since the 3 in the SQ series turned me into a fan of utility metals. Many of the pros on Nike's staff continue to carry SQ model fairway woods. I continue to recommend Nike woods to anyone who asks for a suggestion.

I've also heard good things about Mizuno's F-60 4-wood.

Golf Digest had a couple of pieces in recent years that the 4W is easier for many golfers to hit than the 3W.

Also, in the pre-hybrid era, lots of pros and better golfers carried the 4W as their single fairway wood. The original Adams Tight Lie low-profile wood was basically a 16* strong 4W.

I dont see a real point to carrying 3W and 5W for us higher handicaps since distance is more relative to how well the ball is struck. If I didn't already have a 3 wood, I would've opted for a 4 wood to complement my 20° hybrid.

Works for me. (As well as anything in my game can be said to "work".) Depends a bit on how much you generally use your fairway wood off the tee, though.

I've had a four wood 18* for a few years now, followed by a 20* hybrid. Just got the new mizuno m p clk and I'm hitting it further because of the shaft. I'm toying with the idea of going driver, 17* H, 20*H, 4i on down. But all that to say my 3wood has been in the closet for a while, the 4 wood is just much better off the fairway.

I would lose the 5 wood, keep the hybrid for the versatility, and keep the 3 wood until you find a replacement. I would definitely demo the 4 wood to make sure that you hit this far enough and basically aren't replicating the hybrid distance (which can depend on skill level, swing speed, etc).

I carry a 4 wood then 3 and 4 hybrid and then my irons start at 5i....this allows me to carry more wedges...I have my PW with my set at 45 my GW at 50 my SW is a 56 bent to 55 and a 60 degree so that leaves 5 degree increments in my scoring clubs from 45-60 degrees

I play a 4 wood (Mizuno F60 16.5 degree) and love it. I got it for the sole reason that I wanted to replace my 3 and 5 so I could carry another wedge...

It seems a fraction easier to hit than a 3 wood and goes about the same distance for me.... more consistent too....

I did it for a while, I love my 4 wood it goes a ton, but I am a inconsistent great ball striker and can hit my 3 wood well when I do things right so I keep a 3 wood to ensure I get to the par five greens in two shots. If you aren't a long hitter a 4 wood only should be perfect. They fly very nice and land soft.

i roll w a srtong 3w @ 13.5º and a 4w @ 16.5º
fills the gap perfectly
i rarely to never hit the 3w off the deck
i keep it as a mini driver for tight par 4's, but i can also hit it a mile
off the tee im good to about 235-245 w the 3w and my 4w covers the 220-230 yardage (and i run it w a steel shaft as well-like the heavy weight and makes it easier to get through rough)

I hit my 2H as far as my 5W, so I replaced the 5W. I have thought about replacing my 3W, which is a hot or miss club for me, with a 4W. Been looking for a 4W to try, so I am glad y'all have offered opinions on the subject. Thanks!

I went to a 4W 3 years ago, have never regretted the move. 4W is so much easier to hit off the deck than a 3W. Loss of distance is more than offset with greater control. My setup is similar to Kurtomac, with 4* differences in my wedges.

@NDABCKBRD....I too am a lefty and love my G10 4W.

I play a Nike Sumo2 4W 17* and Nickent 3DX hybrids replace 3I and 4I. I can hit the 3 hybrid as far as my 5 wood so I dumped the 3 and 5 woods and went with the 4W then added a 50* gap wedge.

I'm am about to replace my 3w and 5w with a 4w and add a 58* wedge.

Truth is, I hit my 3w or 5w about once a round and a 4w would suffice in all of those situations. On tight par 4's, I usually hit my 3 iron, which with roll out goes to about 235-240.

I've just gotten to the point where I don't need the extra wood. Now a 58* wedge, is something I can really use. I am faced with a bunch of sub-100 yard shots into greens.

Just makes more sense as I would use an extra wedge lots of times in a round vs. the 3w/5w.
