I saw one of our other forum members - sean miller - mention that as far as brand selection goes, he'd rather know what top amateurs are using than the pros. ( http://thesandtrap.com/forum/threads...l=1#post517623 )

I assume that's because the pros equipment sponsorships may cloud the reality of what clubs are truly preferred by top golfers.

So, what brands for the different clubs do top amateurs use? Anyone know of stats out there that reflect top amateur equipment preferences?

not sure if this is true, but I'd assume Titleist and Mizuno are probably popular choices for amateurs as far as irons go.

Most of our low single hc players use Mizuno MP, a few use Titleist CB/MB/AP2, one is using TP-RAC and one is using Apex Forged, as for drivers it is mostly Titleist 905/907/909 and TM R9 and a few Cobra's. Wedges is mostly Vokey and à few Mizuno, TM and Clevelands. Most use Pro V1

The majority of "top amateurs" that I play with game a lot of Titleist and Mizuno. A few even hit old Hogan blades or the Callaway Prototype. Others, like myself (although I would not consider myself a "top amateur"), game a set of full custom blades. I see almost no shovels in these groups although a player's cavity will make an appearance quite often, the new pocket cavities (ie: the AP2) are somewhat prevalent as well. A few will game hybrids (usually Titleist) but it seems that the majority, again like myself, cling pretty hard to their long irons. Perhaps we'll see more hybrids as more of the youngsters step up (they grew up with hybrids, I grew up with a 2-iron)

I see mostly Titleist and Mizuno as well at the am tourneys i play in. The AP2's and Vokey wedges are quite popular. I dont see many hybrids either, as rebby said, but i game two.

This page tells you all you need to know about Titleist: http://www.titleist.com/players/equi...ts.asp?tabID=3
It's funny too that they rank in the top 3 for all of the tour pro events and clubs too. But their amateur record is nearly unblemished.

Just from what I have seen playing in junior and amateur tournaments I would guess Mizuno is second in irons, Taylor Made is second in drivers/woods/hybrids, Cleveland is second in wedges, and probably Odyssey is second in putters. I have no idea who is second in balls, but Titleist is so dominant it doesn't really matter.

In my bag:

I've seen good single digits play everything and anything I played a tourney with a scratch using big bertha irons 2 weeks ago. I think to generalize what everyday single digit cappers are playing is impossible but if you just looked at what the top amateurs play you will get better answers.

i also see a lot of good players playing callaway forged irons.

the last few single digit, or at least guys who were decent ball strikers, used some combination of the following:

1.) Titleist ZM blades 2.) Mizuno T-Zoid (looked like the Trues) 3.) PING i10 4.) Some kind of Wilson perimeter weighted blade things - his woods were maple 1200s - I'm totally serious 5.) TaylorMade Rac(ish looking irons) 6.) Callaway X Forged (nice looking sticks) 7.) Callaway X22 (she had a really nice swing) 8.) Cleveland TA2 9.) KZG blades 10.) Nakashima perimeter weighted players forged 11.) Cleveland CG2 (is that even a club - I swear that's what it said) 12.) Titleist AP2 And others.

What I've seen are pretty much Titleist and Mizuno. The reason many of us pay attention to this is b/c, although very reduced prices, they still have to buy their own equipment and aren't paid to play it. Usually at that level one is pretty particular about their equipment.

From my experience Mizuno reigns supreme among the better amateurs. I would say 2-to-1 over Titleist and 5-to-1 over the next brand.

    • Day 96 (18 Mar 24) - Continued work with the Divot Board with the GW and hard foam balls.  Focused on small target/small miss…setup to hit target about 30yds out - success if it hit within 6’ circle of target, fail if outside.  Had decent success averaging about 3 out of 4 (hitting in groups of four).

    • I'm relieved someone finally defined hiking. I was giddy when I saw these new TPI videos a day or so after they dropped. Very easy to understand the problem and solution the way they have presented it. Been working on fixing this for about a year and a half now. It's nice to be able to call it something so communication becomes easy.  I was working on more lateral and up too, but just having someone define it clearly in video form was so helpful for me to continue confidently with what I thought was wrong and how I had to fix it.  My conceptual error here was just trying to rotate like a tour pro but without including the necessary forward pressure/weight shift associated with enough lateral and upward motion of the pelvis.  This video is great too, as is Greg Rose.
