Any low-handicappers or scratch players out there who can consistently shoot 70+, or low 80s by playing different mix of brand/model of used balls?

I know it is not something i need to worry with my golf skill right now, but just curious to know.

Absolutely. Doesn't matter. I've had very good rounds this year with an assortment of brands and ball types.

i will play almost any high end ball except the pro v1x's im not a fan of the x's but to me callaway tour anything vs pro v1 vs bridgestone b330 is a pretty even match. yes their is a difference but not enough to notice in the normal round.

I prefer to play the same brand of ball every round but I'm pretty confident I could shoot good scores with any ball.

Yep. Not that difficult to be honest provided you're reasonably confortable with the characteristics of the ball you're using.

Home Course: Wollaton Park GC, Nottingham, U.K.

It doesn't really matter to me. I don't like spending 45.00 a dozen on balls, so I tend to player cheaper balls. It just comes down to knowing how each ball reacts on different shots.

I've become a BIG fan of the Srixon Z-Star and hav a few of the yellow balls. I'm dying to draw a thick black stripe around it, go out and shoot 77 or something, freaking out whoever I play with as I suck a "range ball" back to the pin, hit "hop once and stop" shots wih mid irons, and get ball to dance on shots out of greenside bunkers.

But good players can do this will any high end ball. I've played rounds this year with about four or five different brand of balls.

have to agree, when I do buy high end balls I usually go for the srixons.

Like everyone has said in this thread. Balls don't matter too much once ure playing high end. I'm pretty sure if I had to play pinnacles I my score wouldn't be damaged too badly. But its the performance I get out of balls such as the penta and pro v1s that I keep playing them round after round.

Really? If you don't mind me asking, why don't you like pro v1x's?

Just curious as I prefer pro v1x over other premium balls.

I think the only area where it would really effect me is around the green (60yds in). Plus it would mess with my mind, because I know that I could not stop it on a dime.

BTW - I love the yellow Z-Star idea, I am going to steal that one.

Thanks to all the answers. I'm really glad i asked this question. It seems that good players are highly adaptable and to the different characteristics of the balls they play.

So the next time i miss the green, i know the problem is the golfer and not the ball. :) Many thanks.

Really? If you don't mind me asking, why don't you like pro v1x's?

im not a big fan of them because i have to take full swings to rip them back on the green. i know they are a little longer but my ss is 121 average so i dont need the extra distance that they offer because when i really need to i can tag one well past the 320 mark and still be moderately accurate. the other balls have a little softer cover and when i am 60 yards into a green i want to be able to land the ball and pull it back incase i need to. for example, the first day of tryouts i had 87 yards left (about a 75%-80% sandwedge) with the pin in the front and it is a swamp of a fairway short. i took my half swing and knew it would come back from the back of the green to the front it was about 24 paces from the pitch mark to the ball. i also like them because they tend to be easier to work the ball with...the major thing for me is the short game. i dont like roll, i believe rolling the ball into a pin with a short iron/wedge is a hackers cop out to a real shot and with the 1's i can hit a 4 iron and it generally stops pretty quickly

That's what drives me crazy about the ProV1'a, I get 2-3 holes MAX before the cover is chewed all to pieces. I have to use the X's just to get some life out of it.

    • I kind of like this interpretation especially if you think about it the unplayable rule would probably put you in a better spot.  using back on the line releief.
    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
