Golfing in cold, wet, windy, soft conditions isn't very fun

Not fun at all. No fun.

  • Ball doesn't fly as far or consistently = no fun
  • Wet grips and runny nose = no fun
  • Slow, wet greens = no fun
  • Muddy conditions on tee boxes = no fun
  • Cabbage-patch(ish) rough = no fun
  • Hitting a long iron or hybrid into the wind on holes where you'd normally hit a scoring club = no fun
  • Hitting an iron on the screws into the green and watching it spin off the green when you hit it beyond the flag stick and having this happen a few times in a round = no fun
  • Having your drives check up in the fairway = no fun
  • Having a divot hang on your wedge and then hit you in the back, messing up your shirt = no fun
  • Shooting a score that's probably 5 strokes higher than it should have been because you were, mentally, being a big baby the whole time instead of focusing on what you're doing = no fun


I think I will drown my juvenile tears in alcohol and fatty foods now. G'day!

I played on a very wet course yesterday and I did not mind it too much. Yeah it was a little harder but I still enjoyed it. I guess for a lower handicap it would be more annoying, I am use to hitting bad shots :)

I don't mind cold and water, I'll just put on some warm and wather-proof clothes. Wind though, I hate. Ball goes all over the place, umbrella flies away, raining sideways, effectively much colder.

Agreed. Rain- not fun, but fine. Cold- I'm from New England, I'm used to it. Snow- Sure, every now and then that's kinda fun. But wind sucks. I can never tell whether a bad shot was my swing or the weather.

ya for sure. seems like no matter which way the wind is going the ball goes off in a random direction, for me at least

Not only wind, but water on the ball and clubface?!?!?!?!?! Crazy.

Its all a matter of atittude--mind over matter; if you don't mind, it don't matter. Persoanlly I really like the bad weather for money games and tournaments cuz the conditions usually really bum most players out and subsequently they don't play well. Since I golf year round, live in the Northwest and fly fish for steelhead in the winter I've found ways of dealing with the bad weather. IMO, the most important things are to stay dry & warm. I also admit that bad weather isn't for everyone.

Cold and wet conditions don't bother me too much. If it's cold, I just layer. I sometimes like golfing in wet conditions because I seem to get more agressive in going at the pin, knowing the ball is not going to move/roll much - which usually seems to work out well. And I don't mind putting on slow greens. So cold and wet dont bother me. But wind is NO fun. I'm not good at controlling the trajectory of my shots, so the ball is pretty much all over the place in heavy winds.

What I Play:

Irons: AP1 4-PW

Wedges: Vokey 52* & 60*, Mizuno MP-T 10 58*

My best round was in a 25 MPH cross-wind. Bleh.

My biggest issue with what I listed is ALL OF IT AT ONCE. I don't mind cold. I don't mind wind. I don't mind wet. I don't mind soft (I actually like soft as long as the ball is flying in the air...it's a lot easier to keep your ball in play and to go at pins). I mind it all at once, though. Sue me or deride me as a pansy.

Unless the round has long been scheduled (i.e. golfing when visiting the folks over the holidays), I simply don't golf when the weather is poor. I'm on alright golfer, but I really just play as something to do to enjoy nice weather on a lazy afternoon.

Of course, it's easier for me to say I only play in nice weather since I live in San Diego.

Advantages:

- Rounds tend to be shorter, most people aren't going to lolligag in bad conditions. Fewer casual slow golfers.

- Easier to get tee time, walk on right away more probable.

- Cheaper green fees.

- Hey, you don't have to go to Europe to experience European conditions (well, mostly UK and other northerly parts)

- You meet diehards, usually good players or know how to get around a course and practice good etiquette.

- Don't have to wake up as early for first tee times because sun rises later, frost delays

- Easier to find parking spots closer to the 1st tee (well, in NYC or big cities)

- Makes you appreciate summer conditions.

- No bugs, no bites.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

Yup. Courses are pretty sloppy around here now.

On a positive note, it is nice to fire away at the pin knowing nothing is going to roll. Also, that ground in dirt in your grooves that just won't go away somehow disappears on wet sloppy days.

No - it does roll...BACKWARDS, off of the green.

      I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!

      A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club?
