good scramble score?

My wife and I went today and played scramble style.  I called it best ball, but just read on another thread that best ball is different than scramble.  Anyway, we ended up with a +4 which I thought was not too bad.  Thoughts?

lol sorry but yea thats bad. i havent play many scrambles but i think -16 to -18 normally wins them lol

most scrambles are filled with cheatrers...........10-12 under is good.

Best scramble (4 person) score I've ever heard was a 47 on a par 72. The men played the white tees and the girls play the lady tees. There were 3 solid players from the men's tees and a girl who's a pretty good college player playing from the lady tees. They had 7 eagles and all the rest birdies.

7 eagles is BS.......I don't care if it is a scramble.  Even if they did eagle 4-par5's..................and they holed out from the fairway 3 times too?  LOL............They are full of crap;...

I call BS.........and I've made 11 par4 eagles over the years. It's not thaaat easy......

Here's something to think about

1 time on a scramble on course A, -5 won, we took second with -2

the next time on the same course, -11 won.

It's all about conditions really for scrambles

For 2 people, that is not bad at all - I am assuming you have the lower handicap. So figure, in a 50% handicapped tourney, you would have been under par.

These scores the others are showing you are 4 man scores. I have played with a group that shot -13. But that was with 3 younger guys that could mash - it was a very boring day for me because the only 3 clubs used all day were driver, wedge, putter.

We played in a local Make-A-Wish tournament yesterday. You had an option to buy a cheat which you could use either a mulligan, "tee from red tees" or a chance to extend your shot with a free throw/roll. 1 team ended up with a hole in one with their free roll. The tournament was fun. We ended up shooting a -12 (58) on a par 70 course, 2 teams came in at a 57 and another team tied us with a 58. We placed 4th on the scorecard tiebreaker. We had bought one of the "cheats" but never used it.

Its tough to answer without knowing the format. 4 over is ok for a 2 person scramble. It would be a terrible 4 player score. Are there any restrictions on minimum drives per person? Are mulligans allowed? Generally speaking, I would say that a competitive score would be 10 under or better, but thatcould go up or down depending on specific rules.

I think a good score depends upon how many mulligans you are allowed to buy.  But 18 under (54) is a pretty good score in most 4 player team scrambles (no mulligans)  I have played.  If it is two player team with no mulligans I'd think 8-9 under would be a good score.  But when you allow player to buy "overs" in the rules the scores can get in the forties with four scratch players and 5 mulligans each.  But I think a 4 player team that can go 18 under in a scramble (selective shot) format (no mulligans) has turned in a good round.

With a scramble with no special buy ins like mulligans, and balanced teams, usually -6 to -9 wins. If you have stacked teams and buy in mulligans, i have seen scores from -12 to -18

Ummm.... Have you ever played a 2 man scramble? The only way 2 people are shooting 8-9 under is if both are below scratch golfers. Your average pairing of weekend warriors would be happy to break par in a 2 man event.

Uh, ya, I'd say -18 is a pretty good score...

I've played in a lot of scrambles and have never seen -18.

Most scrambles I've played in it took about -10 to win the championship flight.

Last three scrambles had a high-lo split, so that the higher scores had their own medal flight. My groups, unfortunately, ended up being one of the highest groups in championship. Last time, my group shot three 3-under, and the higher medal flight winner came in at 2-under. If we had missed one more short putt, we would have tied for first in medal flight.

Nothing wrong with that at all. Dont listen to people like Lost Ball. The reason most scramble scores (and the reason I dont play in scrambles unless they are for charity) are so low, is because most people cheat, period. If you did not cheat and got a +4, then you did excellent, and should be proud of both yourself and your wife.

If you're a ~16 handicap, and your wife is about that as well (totally guessing there), +4 isn't bad at all. Think of it this way, what would you expect to shoot if you got two chances at every ball?

A scramble gives you 2 chances at every shot. Best ball gives you 2 chances on every hole. Scramble scores will be much lower.

+4 for a 2 man best ball for a bunch of teen handicappers would awesome. I figure the average 16 handicapper has something like  5 pars, 1 birdies, 8 bogeys and a couple of doubles and one or two really bad holes. Getting rid of some of the doubles and the really bad holes gets you down but you are not shooting enough pars and birdies to go low.  For a scramble it would still be very good but with 2 attempts per shot you should expect your worst hole to be bogey and should expect a lot of pars.

It was just us two.  I would fully expect to be way better if we had four chances on every ball.  My wife, father-in-law, a friend who is female too, and myself played in a 4 man about 2 months ago and we shot -11 to tie for first in the low flight.  The ones I have played in seem to always be won by a -17 or so.  My wife is not a bad player at all.  Hate to admit, but she beats me most of the time.  She played college softball and can normally smash it off the tee.  When she really focuses and tries to score, she is 85-90.

We birdied two holes on front, bogeyed two, doubled one, and par on the rest.  We bogeyed two on the back and pare on the rest of the back.
