I think I would start losing a lot of balls 100 yards, maybe even 75 and further.

Ya, I think I would have made it a tad wider for something over 100 yards.

In the comments he mentions that its 20 yards wide, and that he just buys large lots of balls on ebay every couple of months. He says his young son loses most of the balls. I'm curious how long it is. I wouldn't trust myself hitting anything longer than a 4 iron on it, but I think it would be some great practice for sure.

The problem would be the ball pickup afterward, even if you hit them reasonably close to the flags.  I wouldn't want to go out there and get them.  Maybe he rigged up a lawnmower with a ball collector on it.

Years ago, as part of my physical rehab, I needed to walk alot. I also wanted to swing a club to help regain  my upper body strength. 

I made use of a cross country power line road to walk, and hit balls on it.. The road was alot wider than the OP's gas line version. Maybe about 3 lanes wide. 

I carried a club, a couple balls, and a piece of synthetic turf to hit off of. My wife would follow behind in our car. Started off at  1/4 mile increments, one at a time. A few months later I was up to 4 miles.

I’d put my kid down range with a catchers mask and glove.  Problem solved!

Inside 100 yards, a 20 yard gap is OK. More than that I think it will be cheaper to go to a driving range.

Looks like the powerlines cross the gas line about halfway down. That’s where I’m putting my stand!

I think maybe the intent of a driving range like this one is to get rid of all the extra balls picked up during rounds.  I play with a 102-106 (score not age) gentleman so we spend time up and down the fairwayslooking for his drives and it adds up rather quickly.  (he also carries one of those extending ball retrievers!!)

The intent of a driving rangre of this type is sending not retrieving.  When one has to walk out that way, he takes a bag with him and gathers the ones that stick out, no ?  Doubt there is too much effort reaching for that one down in the blackberries...

I did much the same in my youth! We moved into a new housing development in my junior year of high school. Alongside our house was a road that was cut through the woods, but was unpaved for most of its length. So, there was no traffic on it except for our house and the neighbors house. I found a carpet rem, nailed it to a piece of plywood, and would put it in the middle of that road and hit shots off of it! 

Then, I took my Dad's drill, and drilled a little hole through the carpet and into, but not through, the plywood, so I could insert a tee and hit Driver! My Dad and my Uncles kept me supplied with their castoffs and "smilers".
