Hello all,

From the first day I picked up a golf club I've struggled with getting my hips and shoulders through the ball; my swing is very armsy.  I'm getting closer, but still struggle with it.  I hit the ball decent when I do that, but on my bad shots I finish with my shoulders and hips at best 45 degrees to the target.  I'm looking for suggestions on thoughts to help me with this.  I've been trying to think bout firing the hips to start the swing, but I'm wondering if there's a better option,  Maybe think about starting my shoulders, or even think more about getting to my follow through position than focusing on the start.  Any suggestions?

Hello and welcome to TST. We have a ‘Members Swing’ thread where you can post a video of your swing. I understand your issue with your rotation. Often times it’s a side effect of a more underlying reason. In other words..it may not be your priority piece yet. It’s hard to know this without seeing your swing. It also will help with learning your feels. What one feels he/she does to rotate their hips/shoulders may not be a feel that works for you.

I've got a couple of videos,  but I'm actually doing ok following through in them.  I also do get lessons and my coach said my misses were due to my arms getting ot in front.  All that said,  I can try to post the videos tomorrow if it might be helpful (although I've had bad experiences posting swing videos on another site).

Trust me, this isn't any other site.   There are many great qualified people more than willing to help.  Be open to suggestions.   The site's foundation is based upon facts not feels.   We have a saying here "Feel ain't real".   You have nothing to lose.

I struggle with the same thing.  My new swing-thought is "face the target."

Thanks, that's what I'm thinking about going to.  Typically I have more success with thoughts about starting the swing rather than results, but nothing seems to be clicking for me on this one.

I don't like to think swing thoughts anymore; I like to feel them. In my pre-shot routine I do a couple of rehearsals of what I'm trying to feel in my swing, similar to what Justin Rose does.

Feel free to start a swing thread as @Vinsk suggested. Maybe you have a mechanical issue rather than an execution issue.

An interesting thought is to feel like you are going to throw the club.  Try some practice swings, it effects everything.

I’m not an expert here.  I have really been working on moving to the left and the right sequence and tempo.

What I discovered, at least for me, that the difference between a sold hit with a good follow through and much less was lag.

If I can hold my downswing until I’ve completely moved to the left and not rush it, it pretty much just happens.  The tough part is getting the timing just right.

I don’t know if this will help.

I could be mistaken but he is describing a swing where the body in not as involved as it should be.  That hips, rotation and weight transfer is muted or missing.  It is caused by focusing on hitting the ball not hitting through the ball.  Get rid of the ball and do what I said, imagine you are going to throw the club to right field (if your a righty),  It will bring in the ball throwing motion we all use, weight transfer and rotation.  Grab an old club and actually throw it.  If you have that thought when swinging the club it can help break habits.

It works for me, a pickup in club head speed with less effort.  My strike in not very steep and this helps me with weight transfer and gives me a more descending blow.

Good luck!

I've heard it's more throw the club at the target than right field, and I have played with that in the past but for some reason it never really clicked with me.  Lately I've been toying with the feel of getting to my backswing and dropping my right elbow to my body, and that seems to be working.  Maybe I'll bite the bullet and go ahead and post a couple of videos.

I understand these drills after the ball has left are supposed to help with what happens prior, but for me it never clicked.

I’ve never done any sport where a follow through wasn’t just a natural extension of the strike, hit, pitch, etc.

For me it just sounds like a recipe to exacerbate his casting problem.

They help because what happens after is a product of what happens before. If you're slicing because you're swinging way left, making the arms and hands and clubhead travel out to the right in the follow through changes where it has to come from in the downswing.

As an example.

That's the theory,  but I've had little success with it.  My sad little brain would always start the same way abs make some correction half easy through to get to where I want to be.  I've had much more luck thinking about how to properly start.

Not really,  because in order to throw the club down the target line from a normal back setting position you have to shallow there arms and go almost side arm,  like a good golf swing.  It feels good,  I just totally lose that feel when I get over a ball.
