Shaft Spine Alignment Question

I’m confused about shaft spine alignment when building a club.

if spine alignment is important, why do all manufacturers now make adjustable shafts that rotate and thus move the spine!?

Do only metal shafts require finding the spine.

Some of the adapters will not require spinning the whole shaft - the pieces on the hosel adapter will spin independently. (I think Callaway does this, or did, because their stock grip was the Golf Pride ALIGN grip).

I think spining shafts is over-rated. Just another way to make an extra few bucks per shaft with virtually no performance gain.

Most golf shafts have consistent radial geometry, which makes them ideal for golf clubs that are adjustable. 

I wouldn't worry about it.

If aligning the spine isn't that important, what could the reason for crooked shots possibly be?

The "spline" on a steel shaft is where the rolled steel is welded together. 

With graphite shafts as said above they have a consistent radial geometry. 

What I find interesting is that even with rolled steel shafts there is no universally accepted answer. Some say spline up, some spline down, some say spline back, some say spline forward.

I am re-shafting my irons with new TT steel shafts and plan on spining before installation.

From what I have found, both steel and graphite can be spined.

The general consensus seems to be aligning the spine in the 9 o'clock or 3 o'clock position, with the toe being the 12 o'clock.

I will let you know the results.

Most modern golf shafts today are consistent radially, and can be installed in any position with minimal difference when installed.

"Flo" is an interesting concept.
It would probably vary for each individual swing if shafts are not "Flo" adjusted?

I would image a stronger player with a higher SS the distortion would be greater when comparing to a slower swing.

I don’t buy any of it. I think it’s just another one of those gimmicky things that adds entertainment to this wonderful hobby. It’s fun to think this kind of stuff makes a difference.

I can tell you the results now.  If you did it you wasted your time because it was a "thing" 30 years ago, but it isn't now.

Learning to make square contact with the ball can produce results almost as good as spining shafts. 

Having said that, if a player can't afford lessons, or is too busy to work on their game, spining is a pretty much guaranteed to way of making a a 15 marker a 3 marker. It can take a few weeks, though - perhaps months, in some cases.

So many skeptics. I just had my ball retriever regripped and had the shaft purred and the logo installed in the up position. I can't wait to try it out on the course!
