Has anyone tried to rough up the surface of their grips to make them tacky again?  or what is a time tested solution - besides replacing them of course.

May I ask why you would want to do this and not replace them? And no I have not tried to. Just curious.

I use rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) that you can get at a drug store with a soft scrub sponge. The alcohol removes grime and the soft scrub roughs the surface up a bit. After scrubbing, I use a towel to remove the excess alcohol and let the grips dry. There does come a point where the grips are too far worn for this to help, but it does prolong the life.

I remember using "Easy Liquid Sander" (available in the paint section at Home Depot) to re-vitalize some grips years ago. Haven't used it recently on any of the newer compounds, but you may want to experiment with it. Made those old smooth rubber grips nice and tacky. Jet wet a rag with this stuff, rub the grips and let dry.

I've used a belt sander to cut the dried rubber surface.
And I've used a wire brush either by hand or a round cup brush with my small grinder.
Them wash off the grip with warm water and liquid Dawn.
Good for a month of play.
And use a damp towel on the grip before each swing helps.

After you wash them, especially if it's a cord grip you can run some coarse grit sandpaper over it. But you're really just buying yourself a bit of time, it doesn't last long.

  • iacas changed the title to Refresh Dead Grips?

Go to the automotive section of a store or Autozone, looks for “Westleys Bleach White”…. It’s a whitewall tire cleaner.

Spray it on your grips, wait 30 seconds and rub it hard with a towel.  They will be like new.  I use it and it’s unbelievable

Of course, there's always the option of leaving your grips alone and sandpapering your hands...

    • There are so many videos comparing and contrasting everything that I am both overwhelmed and more than a bit skeptical. Your comments above are much more valuable than hours of you-tube videos. Generally speaking, I’d much prefer to read something that someone took the time and trouble to write (such as your comments) than a bunch of videos, or worse, meaningless reviews that seem like they are all cut and paste selections of the same script. I’m more of a RTFM type than a watcher of “instructional” videos. By way of explanation, I don’t watch TV either.  So thanks - I’ll take that under advisement. I have an H3 that I bought for $10 that I’ve been carrying around but not sure why. Seems like a cool club, but I just don’t really know what to do with it.
    • I was using the window as a mirror. Just trying to be a more aware of the feels for a better backswing. Trying to not be as closed from A1 to A2. Then not letting the club head flip inside. What I was feeling was a pressure my right wrist, and like the palm of my right hand was pushing upward against the grip of the club. My right hand was the underside of the swing path.  Going to play around with this a bit more. It looked pretty decent with mirror/window work. Just wanted to jot it down.
    • Day 4: 3/26/25 Par4Success workout followed by putting through 50 mm gates.
    • Day 249: did a stack putting session and then worked on 5 foot putts for a bit.
    • Day 17 (26 Mar 25) -  Big day working on a project at church - therefore it was grab some time with the 9i in the backyard working on pitch and runs later in the day.  Focused on keeping the ball flighted to get some good rollout.  Hit about 20 shots doing that and then moved to the 54 to keep working on getting good torso rotation and not flipping through it.  Was not perfect as there were some bloopers and fliers but overall a good session on distance control.
