Six balls a month, and three in the off-season! That's living the high life!

So in a year, by my count, that's… 60 golf balls.

Durability was defined differently back then.

Hey now, lets not ignore the remarkably vague language in point 2, in which at each tournament he participates he will also be given "a number of balls not exceeding 3 per 36 holes".  Could be 1, could be 2, hell, it even could be 3!

I wonder what would have happened if the representative (I assume Dunlop) gave him more than three?

I also like that instead of just saying six and three, the contract used half-dozen and quarter-dozen.

I wish they kept going with that.  "... for practice rounds your representative will supply you with a number of balls not exceeding one-twelfth of a dozen per 18 holes."

Hey, yo, here's one-twenty-fourth of a dozen balls. Let's hope you have a lot of putts that are half a ball out.

And nowadays, I hear about a lot of pros (not including Nick Watney) who will switch balls every hole or two.  I'm not sure how true that is, but I imagine some would if there's any blemish on the ball.  Watney at one point was known for using only one ball per round (or, at least, didn't switch out a working ball).

I am very glad to hear I am not the only one who uses the phrase "quarter dozen."

And lastly... what could the price difference have been versus offering this guy (and any touring pros on their payroll) a dozen per round, maybe even including practice rounds?  Now I wonder what competing balls from the time... Slazenger? ... offered.

I think this was before the USGA and R&A standardized the ball constraints, and, for example, if he went overseas to play in the British Open, the balls he used at the U.S. Open would not be allowed.
