But calling -3 on a hole a double eagle shows you don't know what a double eagle is. 😉

True, but at least I'm in good company.

And as a Rules official, I miss "dormie" and "halved" and so on, but those words are gone, so I've been working to remove them.

I'm still keeping dormie alive. Our men's club has a match play championship every year and I always confirm "are we dormie?" when I'm up 2 with 2 to play, or similar.

I don't recall hearing others use the term much, but at least everyone seems to understand what I'm talking about when I ask the question.

Is it OK to use golf as a verb? Is it sand trap or bunker? Open Championship or British Open? We explore golf's most disputed terms … and declare winners

How do you vote on each?

  1. Can "golf" be used as a verb (i.e. "I'm golfing right now!")?
  2. If you make a 2 on a par five, is it an "albatross" or a "double eagle"?
  3. Is a sandy pit area a "bunker" or a "sand trap"?
  4. "Tied," "All Square," or "Halved"?
  5. "Alternate Shot" or "Foursomes", and "Better Ball" vs. "Fourball"?
  6. "British Open" or "The Open"?
  7. "Hole Location" or "Pin Location" or "Pin Placement"?

I'll vote after someone else posts so my reply isn't merged into this topic.

1) Golf has become a verb, which I use, but it really shouldn't have.

2) Most definitely albatross.  What type of term is double eagle

3) Bunker

4) All Square when asked the score but halved for what happened in the hole

5) Fourball

6) The Open

7) Pin placement

What's in the bag

  • Taylor Made r5 dual Draw 9.5* (stiff)
  • Cobra Baffler 4H (stiff)
  • Taylor Made RAC OS 6-9,P,S (regular)
  • Golden Bear LD5.0 60* (regular)

Perhaps the issue is in the fact that no one has ever played weightlift or played fish, or played race, or played bowl. Bowling, weightlifting, fishing, and racing are both nouns and verbs in their -ing form whereas golfing is really just a verb and golf is the noun? Golf is the only word I can think of that can be used as both "play golf" and "golfing." Does that even make sense? I don't know, I just know "golfing" hurts my ears.

Anyway, I will never say golfing and I will still correct my children when they ask me "if I am going golfing." I will forever answer them with, "No, I am going to play golf."

Then again I wear a white belt A LOT so maybe my personal choices aren't what they should be... 😜

Yeah, Dad is weird...

I would argue someone plays THE drums, and the "the" is an ellipsis? Nobody has ever played the golf. I fear this conversation has gone off the rails...🥴

What are you doing?

1. Playing drums.

2. Drumming.

What do you play?

1.  Drums.

Can we all agree that the English language just sucks sometimes!   I can't imagine trying to learn it but here we are trying to decide if a noun  is a verb.   It's both!

From the land of perpetual cloudiness.   I'm Denny

  1. Can "golf" be used as a verb (i.e. "I'm golfing right now!")  Yes, of course. It's a noun and a verb in the English language. Some sports are only nouns. Some are both. Claiming otherwise is no less ridiculous than claiming the past tense of fight is fighted because that's how past tense works in English.
  2. If you make a 2 on a par five, is it an "albatross" or a "double eagle"? No strong feeling here but I like Albatross more.
  3. Is a sandy pit area a "bunker" or a "sand trap"? Synonyms. Though I only ever use "bunker", "sand", or "trap". Never "sand trap".
  4. "Tied," "All Square," or "Halved"? Match play, "all square". Stroke play, "tied".
  5. "Alternate Shot" or "Foursomes", and "Better Ball" vs. "Fourball"? Alternate shot and best ball (not better ball). If I have the option between a name that gives me lots of info about what it is I'm naming versus one that give little to none, I'm always choosing the former!
  6. "British Open" or "The Open"? If talking with golfers who know what "The Open" means, then either. If talking to anyone else, using "The Open" is insufferable.
  7. "Hole Location" or "Pin Location" or "Pin Placement"? I've used hole location and pin placement, but use hole location way more often.

    • Day 26: Did full swing practice after work. First 15 balls were working on top of the backswing feel, and then tried to incorporate transition feel into the next 15 balls. A's, although this will be my last season of being a fan as they leave for Las Vegas (by way of Sacramento for a few seasons). Hard to see myself rooting for the Giants, but if that's the only MLB in the Bay Area, I guess I might get on board.
    • My two cents? Don't. As a beginner that's interested in learning about the golf swing, you'll find yourself consuming a lot of information, most of which isn't even relevant to your own swing. You need to learn you can't think your way to a good golf swing. Focus on the one thing that you're working on and doing that on every swing, come what may. And remember, mishits happen.
    • Day 6 (7 May 24) - More work in the backyard focused on tempo in addition to setup.  Worked with 6 and 7 irons hitting hard foam balls - used the old MacGregor irons to mix it up a little.
    • No! lol. But they have to be in the right sequence to play mid-handicap golf or little better. Mostly. And even in that there is range/margin for error in the motions and positions that most normal humans can handle. It helps if you have a decent idea of how a golf club moves around the body like you would any other equipment sports (baseball and hockey might be the closest) After all, fairways are 40 yards wide. Don't overthink it. Be diligent in getting basics right. I will concede that it is harder than it sounds but it certainly is not exact angle/exact position/exact degree of bend/exact speed/exact facial expression, etc, every.... single.... time or the result is horrible death.
    • Looking to play in the Severna Park Golf league and it got rained out the first three weeks. I know the course is being renovated so it is not in great shape but the location is easy for me and I would love to meet some other golfers in my area. Anyone here in Maryland Annapolis area?
