On the topic of playing slow, and players learning to play slow, is there a rule against these guys looking at their phones and scrolling through tiktok when they are in a backup?

I looked up the PGA rule on slow play as I had never read it.  So I did read it.  While I concur the rule could be simplified and more clear. But, having said that,  the rule does seem petty inclusive of the situations one might expect.  So I believe I fall on the side of the officials need to just decide to enforce the rule.  You cost a few of the Pros a few grand with a stoke they were not expecting, I believe they will pay attention to pace of play.

If anyone is interested, here is the URL for the Rule.  https://www.pga.org/Document-Library/pat-rules-policies-guidelines-pace-of-play.pdf

This is ridiculous. I would have no problem with immediate disqualification in instances like this one

Ha. Yeah I honestly would be in favor of banning using marks on the ball to line up putts. It's SO f***ING SLOW. Because of the angle of your vision when you're squatting over the ball, the variance in where the line actually points in comparison to the start line you want is so high. Adding another walk behind the ball and squat and examine on most holes on top of the one for reading the putt makes folks who use that painfully slow on the greens.

Though I agree with @iacas that the bigger problem is the broadcast. I'd of course love it if the leaders on Sunday were finishing in 4-4:30. I'd rather not watch 3 hours and only see the leaders' back nine 😆 But really the problem is broadcasting long pre-shots and too many commercials. I'd MUCH rather watch a 3 hour back nine with 2x more shots shown per minute than a 2:15 back nine with the number of shots shown per minute now.

I’d like to see them implement an actual shot clock similar to how some Texas Hold’em games run. You’re given three time extensions. After that, for golf, you’re given a one stroke penalty for each time you exceed the allotted time. 60 sec from the time you reach your ball to execute the shot.

I agree. I almost gag everytime  i hear how a group is  "on the  clock". Start  issuing  individual penalties and  play will speed  up.  Baseball is  much more watchable  now.

I agree. Right  now the  players  know being  "on the  clock" is totally  meaningless.

Thanks for posting this. I’ve never read the rule either but it seems very reasonable. First, I don’t think a 4:21 round is unreasonable at a high level way of tracking time. Second, the 40 second rule to complete a stroke is pretty good too.

So I guess the LPGA Tour rule enforcers have bigger balls than the ones on the PGA Tour?

I saw that and was thought the TOUR should take some lessons. Having that said, apparently that player had lost other matches previously to penalty strokes for Slow Play and hasn’t learn her lesson yet

She wasn't DQed for slow play, she was DQed for signing a wrong scorecard because she didn't include the slow play penalty strokes after they had been assessed, she had appealed, and her appeal was denied.

This was defiance and should draw a suspension from the Lady's governing body, IMO.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

@turtleback who can say whether she accidentally or intentionally forgot to include the one stroke penalty on her scorecard. Not sure if that merits a suspension. That said, I applaud the LPGA for enforcing the slow play rules. I’d like to see the PGA follow suit. Heck — I’d like to see my club enforce that for our tournaments!

The LPGA provided that information.

Ciganda opted not to add the two-stroke penalty to her signed scorecard. She was told that leaving the official recording area with a signed score lower (without the penalty strokes) would lead to disqualification, and left on her own accord.

    • Amazing picture.   One of my favorite vacations!
    • I can see how some people might not think or know it is how they are pushing against the ground that causes your hips to spin in a certain way. It makes sense when he describes torque. Also, that PGA Tour average is like 2x more push with the left leg than the right leg.  Yea, if someone is very right side dominant, or just has a weakness in their left leg, they could struggle with early extension no matter how they try to keep the tush back. Even if you feel your left leg extend, if the direction of the force is not pushing the hip back and up behind you, it can push your leg back and away from the target more, which is not ideal.  Pending muscle weaknesses and mobility, I almost feel like early extension is solved at this point.
