  1. 1. Read the quote in the first post, then choose the answer which fits best.

    • The passage says nothing about scoring, how to score, or expected scores.

    • The passage implies or states that where the golfer hits their tee shot will affect their score for the hole.

After some consideration I voted #2.

Quote
    • The passage implies or states that where the golfer hits their tee shot will affect their score for the hole.

The passage implies and states that if one were to hit the left side of the fairway their approach would be substantially tougher which would negatively affect their score for the hole (on average).

But what makes No. 2 at Laurelwood stand out is that the angles actually work. The fairway is the right width, and the green complex correctly sized and oriented, for the approach to be substantially tougher from the left than from the right.

If the approach is substantially tougher from the left than from the right then it's implied/stated that where the golfer hits their tee shot will affect their score. "Substantially tougher" holds weight here, IMO.

Simply reading the poll for what it states, it seems pretty clear that where the golfer hits their tee shot will affect their score for the hole.

I voted #1. but now changing to #2. I was thinking much harder than necessary. Guess it is simplistic - all strategy is about scoring. I mean  duh.. lol.

I know not the point of the thread but to each their own. I think the tee shot to right is substantially tougher (and riskier in relation to ending with a high score).

I voted #1 also, but looking back I'm not sure why. I won't bother to change mine. I way WAY over-thought this whole thing.

I went with option #2. The language clearly implies that the right side is the optimal play.

Given that option 2 says: "The passage implies or states that where the golfer hits their tee shot will affect their score for the hole." when the passage pretty clearly states that a drive hit down the right will result in an easier second shot than the drive down the left, I don't think there's any doubt that is what the passage states.

That said, I don't think the passage gives you any real indication of where you should aim. That depends on how dicey the trouble on the right is and how different the approach is from the left and right. If the "dicey" is OOB or significant chance of lost ball, then I'm aiming left enough that my right miss is still in the fairway. That may well be left of center, potentially quite a bit.

Unless a fairway is more than 60/70 yards wide (maybe Nr 1/18 at Saint Andrews, talking about hitting the right side or the left side is pointless. Aim at the middle and your left misses are going to be in the left side and your rigth misses are going to be in the rigth part of the fairway.

I don't like neither of the answers of the poll.

Just because you don't like the answers doesn't mean that there isn't one that clearly fits better than the other as the answer.

The poll is asking you which of those two answers fits the passage the best, not whether you agree with the answers or not.

Unless a fairway is 80 yards wide, my left misses are in the left rough and my misses are in the right rough. My straight shots wind up in the fairway. But yes, I'm aiming at the middle of the fairway unless there is asymmetric trouble, in which case I might aim well off center. 18 at Sawgrass, I might even be aiming that in the right rough (depending on my game on the day). I have played that hole once and on the day in question I was not missing anything left of my aimpoint, so I could aim at the left edge of the fairway and know that I wouldn't go left of that. That's not exactly my normal though.

    • I'll poke a dead horse here. I like chipping, always have. However, if its a relatively clean roll I'll putt. I choke down just a bit, in my head I'm taking a little flex out of the shaft seems to stay on line better because I usually need to give it some horsepower to get it rolling good. I had about a 20 yard or so chip in to save par the other night in league night. That was the end of my 4 hole even par stretch. All down hill after that.

    • This is a relevant topic, beyond the statistical nonsense. Generally, if I can use a putter and the grass is not long or uneven, I believe my results are better with the putter than another club.  Some of the green aprons, when dry, are virtually like a slightly slower green. There are other players who swear they get better results chipping from eerywhere other than the green. I suspect a short game guru has studied this and has a general recommendation.
