I guess it depends on what you call "nice". I've played lots of nice courses by my definition, which is a good layout that is kept in good condition. I haven't played any "name" courses that most people would recognize. Mostly they just strike me as expensive without really offering a better golfing experience. I've played relatively unknown (unknown outside of Colorado anyway) courses designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Pete and Perry Dye, Hale Irwin. All were excellent courses. I've played equally "nice" courses designed by architects you never heard of.

If a course is uninteresting, poorly maintained, or poorly designed, I won't usually play it a second time, but the ones I return to all qualify as "nice" by my definition, and that's what counts for me.

How about I list 'em and you decide which is the nicest:
Doral; all of them, but the Blue Monster is the most famous,
Troon North; Monument Course,
Grayhawk; Talon and Raptor.
Those are probably the nicest ones I can remember playing. There are other courses I have played that would rate pretty close to those listed, they are just not as well known.

Born and raised on Oahu but never started golfing until 4 years ago. I go to Hawaii every year to visit with family and for business. I try to golf as many courses as I can. This year hope to golf at Ko'olau Golf Course and since the youngest DD is getting married at Turtle Bay Resort, we hope to get in a round at the Turtle Bay Palmer.

Lots of nice courses but my fave one is Luana Hills Country Club on Oahu, Hawaii http://www.luanahills.com/
The back 9 is set in the valley among a rainforest. The front 9 set atop a hill with a view of windward Oahu. Course is set among the Ko'olau Mountain range....lush, green, fragrant and tight fairways.

My avatar (Kapolei GC) is one I took as the plane I was on was on approach to Honolulu International Airport.

Have played a lot of nice courses - in no particular order

1) Edinburg USA - Minneapolis
2) Royal Woodbine - Toronto
3) Legends - Myrtle Beach, SC
4) Dunes - Myrtle Beach
5) Old Head - Ireland
6) Mid Pines - Southern Pines, NC (not in great shape when I played it but a sucker for Donald Ross designs).
7) Woodside Plantation - Aiken, SC
8) Boyne Highlands - MI
9) Hardscrabble CC - Fort Smith, AR
10) Kingsmill River Course - Williamsburg, VA (not a great time of year but a fine course nonetheless)

But the one that definitely stands out was the Old Course at Ballybunion. Truly a great test of golf.

Maybe not the "nicest" courses, but the most desired ones; St. Andrews Old Course (shot 100) and New Course (shot 101). Also played two other courses there during a 4 day road trip. Would love to play those again now that I am playing a lot better.

Other courses:
Hollow Creek, Middletown MD
Rolling Green, outside St. Charles Utah
A very unique course in Saudi Arabia, all sand with oil sprayed circles (greens)
And a lot of military courses that were decent around the world

I feel pretty fortunate, I have been lucky enough to play in Hawaii, New York, Oklahoma, Illinois, Nevada, California, Florida and Texas and I'm and Aussie. The nicest tracks I have played in the USA are Saratoga National (NY) and Southern Hills in Tulsa. I also enjoyed the Palmer at Turtle Bay (probably because I played well). Down my way, I have played a lot of golf in Asia, all great courses, but the greens are sadly lacking. In Australia, the nicest courses I have played are New South Wales (mentioned previously by another poster), Arundell Hills CC in Queensland, Royal Melbourne in Victoria, for condition alone, its hard to go past Royal Sydney (I have played 3 times when championships were on and it was pristine). I have been to Cape Kidnappers in New Zealand but did not get to play, it is on the list and will be very hard to beat!

    • Day 106: did a stack session.
    • Day 292 - Filmed some swings focusing on the same thing (setup, grip, wrist at the top).
    • Day 182 (31 Oct 24) - Shorter session today.  Worked with the 5i - setup, alignment and overall tempo - hitting into the net.
    • Thanks! It actually briefly dropped to 5.8 at some point in July, but it felt like it was too rich for my blood every moment of the whole two weeks I held the 'level' for me to sustain it. The term 'impostor syndrome' comes to mind.. :-)) I have certainly done better than I have in the previous years to stay the course in how and what I have practiced but yes, it's a high probability that I'm leaving a lot on the table.
    • Dang... in the realm of things that probably don't matter all that much, golf slumps are the worst. Yes definitely consult a pro ASAP. Get back to hitting it solid again. Hitting the sweet spot solves a lot of problems. For me it's always the latter. My confidence grows as I hit more and more solid shots, which are the result of continuing to improve my swing thru better concepts, better practice, etc.  Yea, this for sure. And also, without a professional there to let you know you "did it better this time" it can be unnecessarily frustrating and confounding working alone. It's not that you can't work alone; clearly, you can. But during rough patches, it's always smart to consult professionals. Lessons are an amazing place to take new concepts and turn them into feels that you are confident will work. It's still really cool you consider this your best ever season. Congrats on hitting 7.8 this year!
