I will only post numbers I have gotten on a launch monitor (which itself may not even be accurate but probably better than outside where wind, slope, etc have much more to do with it).

Driver - average about 235-245 carry (ss 95-100)
6 Iron - average about 160-165 carry (ss 82-84)

At the range I seem to hit everything shorter than this, I think its the balls. On the course these number seem reasonably accurate. One time I hit a GPS-verified drive 310 on a level hole, however I did have about a 30 mph tailwind, so some of the "300 hitters" may just be like me where they got it once or twice with a huge tailwind and assume that is their average.

This " No one ever said wich direction " stuff is complete BS. If you hit it 290 and shank it right, then you hit it 350 straight? lmao, please. I honestly have yet to play with someone who can cinsistenly out drive me, and there is no way in hell I avg. near 300. Granted, I play on a real course (Ones with wind in your face off the tees on occasion, tight fairways, and properly marked yardages). I played this Pub. course the other day and I was hitting my 7 Iron from the "200" marker. Yea, I'm a nine handicap, but I putt damn near 40 times a round. Here is some info.

7-iron...............171
8-iron...............159

So for all you who can consistantley hit it further than the pros, 1) Congratulations and 2) Why do you still suck?

Easy short game is what takes people to the next level and im sure the people your are refering to are not any where near as consistant as the pros golf is not about distance.

This thread has turned from "Average Distance" to "I'm Better Than You" or "You Can't Hit It That Far"...... Typical forum BS. As we all know driver DISTANCE only matters on 14 tee shots, and a lot of courses that I play you can only hit driver 8 or 9 times....

The next variable is WHERE you play, I play in Arizona alot and if you play there in August before they overseed in October you get an extra 10-15 yards of roll. Where I live in Wisconsin spring is wet and you can plug balls off the tee. But none of it really matters except for the total amount of swings you took for the whole round.

These are what I consider a good well struck ball but this doesn't represent the greatest shot I've ever hit with each club. These are stock distances I use in summer when selecting clubs on the course, this doesn't include the tops, fats, shanks, etc that make me a 17hcp.

I don't see the point in calling anyone out as a liar just because they're "long" but carry a high hcp. I guess I'm above the average distance and right there with tour pros if looking at the chart above, big deal, they'd piss all over me on any course. Doesn't mean I'm lying about the distances, if anything I'd lie about my handicap if I wanted to lie about something online.

I haven't really touched a wood yet, so here's the distances for my 5 irons up:
I've started 6 months ago from really 0 (my first time with a club I hit nothing but air for an hour, that wasn't fun!), so my longer irons are getting better but the gap in yardage is not very pronounced yet.

(4i = not hitting it consistently enough to even write a number down)
5i = 155 y
6i = 150 y
7i = 137 y
8i = 125 y
9i = 120 y
PW = 110 y
AW = 95 y
56ΒΊ = 77 y
60ΒΊ = 60 y

I tried to be conservative with the above figures. If I hit one pure, then it's 5~10 yards better on most clubs, but since we're talking averages, I thought I'd better be honest with myself…

We have a few short courses (mostly all par 3s) in Tokyo that I go often to. It's great practice and it allows me to actually play golf and not just do lessons at the range. My coach really wants to build solid foundations before we move to the longer clubs. (and I kind of like this approach anyway)

driver 250
4 wood 220
hybrid 200
4 iron - don't much use
5 iron 175
6iron 165
7 iron 155
8iron 145
9 iron 135
pw 120
51* - 80
58 - never taken a full shot
putter - could probably whack out a good 40 yards

Ok, I crunched some numbers...

The average player here hits his driver an average distance of 262.9 yards.

The average single digit or lower player here hits it 277.9
The average double digit hits it 244.2

The average PGA tour player, who's handicap is around +5, hits it 287.9

So, the best players on the planet, with the most sound fundamentals and athletic prowess can only hit it 10 yards farther than us?

Or, is it possible, we are fooling ourselves... You choose.

The problem is, many people assume that the hole measurement is accurate, ok, so it's a 400 yard par 4, and I have 120 left after my drive, so I hit it 270, right? Wrong! Those numbers are not measured straight, and they are rarely accurate. To get a true average driving distance, you must measure every drive you hit during a round with a GPS, then average the distances. You will be amazed. The Tour measures drives with extremely sensitive, expensive equipment, and keeps meticulous records. We don't, and most of us are merely kidding ourselves.

When I go out and play with an average 10 handicapper with a good, solid swing, I find they drive the ball around 225 yards. I've played with a few guys who were considered the longest hitters on the course, and just blew every drive a mile out there. I measured their drives around 265-275.

Ok, I crunched some numbers...

I agree.

Longest drive competition at our tourny on saturday was one by a guy who hit it 285. And that is a loooong way. Downwind at another course the longest drive is won with about 310 yards. It is hard to believe anyone averaging 300 yards. Apart from the pro at our course who is a beast and plays +4, so technique is perfect and he really gets everything into his drives, there is no-one who averages more than 265-270. That is still a very long way to average. Even the pro probably does not average 300 though.

That is still a very long way to average. Even the pro probably does not average 300 though. Just as an example here are the stats from our local pro, knowing where he lands the ball : 340 yards - Downhill/Downwind 300 yards - slight crosswind 250 yards - dead into wind 255 yards - dead into wind 310 yards - crosswind helping 270 yards - crosswind slightly against 270 yards - crosswing slightly against 290 yards - downhill wind slightly against 320 yards - downwind 255 yards - dead into wind 250 yards - dead into wind 310 yards - crosswind helping 310 yards - uphill/downwind we play in 15-25 mph winds all the time. by these numbers he is averaging 286 yards. you can see he has x6 300+ yard drives but to average 300 yards. sheesh that is a long way. And as I say this guy is a big man with perfect technique who is hitting the ball bang in the middle of his club "almost" everytime. He hits low drives into the wind or big high soaring drives with draws if needed. You do not have that kind of technique as a higher handicapper.

I agree some might be either guessing wrong or just judging distances wrong when they're on the course. That being said, I'll estimate my average drive on a calm day to be around a comfortable 260-265. I don't consider that far fetched by any means, even for a mid HCP.

I have a 2 HCP buddy of mine who I play with quite often. He booms the ball. A very athletic, solid and built kind of guy. Just from me witnessing him in person and judging by that alone, I would say he averages 275+. Mind you, he's a very good golfer, but I've been around mid HCP's who can drive the ball farther than me.

Hitting drives a long way doesn't really correlate to being a good golfer or not.

About everything else does though.

340 yards - Downhill/Downwind

Yep, 286.9 is his average drive. So, supposedly our average hitter on here plays just 10 yards short of this? Ha! You'd need a clubhead speed of about 110 mph, and hit the driver dead center nearly every time. I have a clubhead speed even higher than 110, and yet I couldn't

hope to average that far, I'm not a professional. Phil Mickelson has a clubhead speed in the low 130s, and his average driving distance is 300.1 yards. He's the second best player on the planet, so it's probable he gets all of it most of the time. What I love though, is that these higher handicaps can some how hit their driver dead center every time, but not be able to hit their irons well enough to shoot lower... Funny that.

Don't forget those driving stats are such a bad indicator of distances. Often players will hit 3-woods instead of drivers on the two holes that are used to measure these statistics.

Edit: I played with 2 pros on monday at my home course and i was consistently out driving these guys by 10-15 m. i am 6 feet 4 inches tall so clubhead speed is not as hard to generate.
