I was just looking around and saw this interesting tidbit:

http://www.leaderboard.com/loftinfo.htm

The measured lofts on all my clubs takes me back to 1965, except that my PW is about 50 degrees not 51. I guess, I'm "old club fashioned". :-$

Just kidding. It's our normal foursome answer. Average good hit for driver is, with summer roll, 250, seven iron 160, pw 110. If I was serious about golf I would have to quit.

A problem with the newΒ sets is they require you to carry additional wedges or have larger gaps.Β  It used to be the gap wedge wasn't a required wedge,Β older golfΒ sets went from PW to SW at normal gap spacing but with the new sets you need a gap / attack wedge to fill the 10+ degree gap between modern day PW and SW.

Yeah, now I'm not sure how much use there is for my 52 (probably dropping that for the 3W again). If I am slightly closer than the 100 marker 52, slightly farther PW. This has not happened that often except if I am using a driver on those ~350 holes. My PW(50)/56/60 is probably enough. Now, I just need to LSW-fy them with labels on the side for intermediate distances.

Max distance I hit with any kind of accuracy. Driver: 265 3 wood: 230 5 wood: 215 3 hybrid: 200 4 hybrid: 190 5 iron: 180 6 iron: 170 7 iron: 160 8 iron: 150 9 irons: 140 46: 130 50: 115 54: 105 58: 90 Putter: 40 feet :-)
In my bag Driver: Cleveland CG tour black Fairway Woods: Diablo Octane 3 wood; Diablo 5 wood Irons: Mizuno MP53 5-9 Hybrid: Cobra 3, 4 T-Rail Wedge: 46* Cleveland, 50* Cleveland, 54* Titleist, 60* Titleist Putter: Odyssey protype #6 Ball: Maxfli U4/U6... But I'm not really picky about the ball I use.

I don't know if this will be useful, but I play in the northwest and this time of year it's very heavy air and sometimes cold, and wet fairways with some mud. My driver I prefer to hit semi-low, a callaway razr fit extreme, so I turn to driving with my 3 wood and seven wood and actually outdrive my foursome because of air time with the higher lofts. Got a good bounce with my seven this week and drove it 240. Something to think about when considering distance.

Driver speed of 93, regular flex shafts...yardage is what I play as carry distance.

This might be older.

I also am being honest.Β  I don't own a rangefinder or haven't used any swing monitor or anything to get technical, but I know how far I hit it.Β  One caveat:Β  My wood distances, especially driver, are total, not carry.Β  I have no idea what my driver carry distance is.Β  Also, these aren't technically "averages" either, but the club I use for a shot that distance.

It was in the Average distance thread, without the "don't lie" part.

I think you were a more seasoned golfer prior to joining, so it makes sense that you at least had a gut feel for your distances without any monitoring equipment, or rangefinders.

If I looked at my old reported distances it was all over the place. Mostly, because it was all over the place.

It would be interesting to know where players played......dry, high altitude, or Pacific Coast rain belt, etc. I think heavy or light air, heat or cold has a great deal to do with distances. I don't know the exact effect they have, but just from experience I'm thinking sometimes 20 yards with a driver, and if the fairways are wet maybe much more. Don't know of any research. Does anyone?

At least for me, don't really care. To many variables come into play. ;-)

There's a lot of data on this topic, but here is the recommendation from the PGA tour.

"--The wind: In general, every 10 mph of wind equates to one more or less club. If there’s a 10-mph wind in your face, opt for the 8-iron over the 9; conversely, if there’s a 20-mph wind behind you, choose your pitching wedge over a 9- or 8-iron.

--The temperature: The hotter it is outside, the farther the ball is going to carry. The cooler it is β€” i.e., early in the morning or late in the dayβ€”the less it’s going to carry. Also pay attention to the moisture on the ground because when it’s cool and damp out, you’re not going to get as much roll on the fairways as you will when the course has had a chance to dry out.

--The altitude: At higher altitudes, the air is thinner so the ball will move through it more efficiently; and, as such, will travel farther.

--Elevation: For every 10 yards of elevation (to an elevated green or one below your feet), add or subtract a full club. The lie of the ball can also play a factorβ€”if you’re on a moderate to severe upslope, for instance, you may want to take one more club (i.e., a 6-iron vs.Β  7-iron), since the hill will tend to add loft to the club."
