I was just thinking about this and wondering which club do you think is the best investment? Meaning, which club are you going to get the most bang for your buck on. In my opinion, it's hands down the putter. Really, if you find the right putter, you might not ever need to buy a new one again in your golfing career. That and it's probably the most important club in your bag.

I agree, and with putters the technology's not going change and put you at a disadvantage. Drivers and irons that are just a few years old drop in value like lead balloons but look at what people are paying for old Bullseyes and Ansers. Not even getting into how much those limited issue Scotty Camerons are going to be worth down the line.

Gotta be the putter - Scotty's have a market all their own...

I'm thinking you are meaning investment in your game.....not resale value which sucks for all clubs.

I agree....investment in your game....hands down, the putter . It's not an item that's gonna get worn from impact and the angles shouldn't change unless you develop the bad habit of casually propping up on it or using it for anything other than putting.

I should take a lesson from the games greatest player. He's been gaming the same putter for 13 major wins. I, on the other hand, switch mine out way to often.

I can't help it.....occasional change seems to keep me focused more on the flatstick.

Found this image on esoitericgolf.com - and in my book the club that you use for almost every other shot must be your "best investment"

Tough call because putting is such a mental game. If by "best investment" you mean the club you will spend the most money on, and you need to spend $300 on a putter to convince yourself subconsciously that it makes you a better putter... then I guess that is your best investment.

Moreso than any other club in your bag, putting happens in your head. I've seen enough kids putt the lights out with Acuity or Square Two or whatever putters... and conversely have seen enough hacks 3 putt every green with their brand new Scotty Cameron.

I don't know why, but my answer is irons. If I'm not comfortable with my irons and my long game, my confidence with everything else just doesn't seem quite as good.

Irons simply because their technology has drastically changed over the years and you have to get them and the shafts correct. You can two putt with anything.

Easily the irons. I can use them off the tee, fairway, rough, and hell, even the putting green. I can use the putter off the tee, fairway, rough, etc. but it sure won't go anywhere close to where I can get the ball with irons.

I voted for putter because I feel that you should purchase the putter that provides you with the most confidence. As I feel that putting is the hardest part of golf, you should focus the most amount of your effort AND money towards it.

I guess I could have been a little more clear in what I meant. By best investment I mean that even if you purchase a $300 putter, if it's one you like and one that you putt good with, you're probably not likely to switch away from it if you putt well with it. A good putter should really last you a long, long time. All the other clubs get updated with new technology and you almost have to replace them in a handful of years to keep up with the technology of the game.

From a technology standpoint, IMHO, the driver has made the most significant changes.

Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?

Putter. Simple math. 30 strokes per round. What other club do you do that with?

Putter. Its the most important club in the bag. Buying a putter that you feel comfortable with and that helps you sink more putts is the single best way to lower your scores.

invest in your putter man. It is the most important club in the bag. Drivers a way over priced. Why pay 400$ for a club that you will hit only off the tee. So if every hole was a par 5 or long 4 you hit your driver 18 ( I have never run in to a course like this) times maximum. you use your putter almost twice as much (not that you would want to). As they say tournaments are won with the short game.

That being said I would go blow all your money on a scotty cameron wich I also think are over raited. Look for a reasonable 200-350 dollar putter.

You would go? Or wouldn't go? Since you stated they are overrated...

SC OTR putters are $300 retail. Easily found cheaper on eBay new and used.

    • Rule 1.2b refers you to a section in the Committee Procedures (Section 5I) that helps explain what a Code of Conduct may (and may not) do.  Defining acceptable behavior (including smoking) and applying Stroke of DQ penalties are certainly within the Committee's authority. That Code of Conduct certainly should be available, either in written form or in a webpage accessible to all.  It may not show up on the "standard local rules" for an organization, the "hard card", as it sounds like its a policy of this particular golf course. Assuming that's the case it should show up on the Notice to Players for this particular event.  If you can't find it, ask someone, send an email, try to find out.   In summary, yes the Committee can DQ (or withdraw) a Player for smoking, even before or between rounds.  But its up to you to go from there, communication is the key here.

    • Hmm... I not sure I completely understand. If the course has a no smoking policy, then he shouldn't smoke at the course.  I'm assuming since you are aware of the policy, it must be written down somewhere.  As far as getting disqualified from the tournament, I would think that would be up to the committee. But it feels like it is within their power to disqualify, so why take the chance?
