Against much better top 5 competition, but (ostensibly) significantly weaker fields, overall.

No, it doesn't.

Wilt Chamberlain faced more all time great Centers, and much more often, than Shaquille O'Neal. Look at how many Top Tier Hall of Famers he played 25+ games against, versus what Shaq faced.

However, Shaq probably faced better Centers, on average.

No he didn’t.

Top players all benefited from weak fields.

They all had boosted stats.

When only five to ten guys are capable of winning a tournament (i.e. really high odds), win totals and top ten finish totals are super inflated.

I've been thinking that perhaps there should be a faq linking to a couple of dozen posts in the thread that we can point newbies to who come here with half-baked comments.

And new guy, the minute you start introducing top tens and second place finishes you've already lost.

As to length, Jack marvelled at the places Tiger hit the ball in the '97 Masters.  A tournament where Tiger was using the same steel-shaft, persimmon-headed clubs and wound balls that Jack played.  AndvTiger won 6 straight USGA titles as a young man using that same equipment.  The issue isn't how long Jack would have been with modern equipment, the issue is how much longer Tiger was playing the same equipment Jack did.

And while the newby admits the BO fields were weak he claims that was the only one, perhaps he should consider that for much of Jack's prime the field in the PGA Championship was made up of about 2/3rds club pros.  And that in your non-majors a sizable portion of the field was made up of club pros.  And finally, in the prime of his whole career Jack never played an event where substantially all of the top 50 players played.  While during HIS career Tiger played at least 5 events every year where substantially all of the top 100 played.  That would be the 4 majors and the Players.

And while it is far from the faq I envision, post 6829 in this thread has links to a selection of posts the newby can read to find out just how off base he is.  And it is probably a good time to mention that I lived through Jack's career and he was my golf hero.  And I still like him a lot for his golf, although in some respects his public comments make him as or more disappointing than Tiger's peccadillos.

Is there any way you could put the direct urls for all the links in your folder into a file and store it somewhere on the site so when someone new comes here we can refer them to it?  It is hard for a newby to read this whole thread, but by picking out some gems and making them easily accessible we can get newbies up to speed so they can see that their points have already been considered?

I agree with your overall argument; however, this is not true. Tiger did not use a persimmon driver when he won the ‘97 Masters.

True...but the important point is better equipment made it harder for the better players to win. It actually narrowed the gap.

I offer no opinion or argument on that point (you're probably right), nor did the previous poster raise that point.  I merely pointed out a flaw in the facts the poster laid out.

Thank you for the link! Much appreciated!

Tiger never used persimmon headed clubs at the 97' Masters. He used a King Cobra Deep Faced driver with 9 degrees loft and a True Temper steel shafted driver. In fact, he never used the type of woods that Jack used, ever, on the PGA Tour.

He did use a Titleist Professional 90 golf ball. Wound, old, garbage ball in 97'.

@iacas

Yeah,  @ncates00  already corrected me on that and I acknowledged it.

I hope you enjoy and are edified by these posts.

@iacas That post about Jack's luck in getting handed majors by other players is interesting. I do think Tiger has benefited from that at times as well. The 2005 Masters jumps to mind.

    • Thank you @ChetlovesMer, (not sure if this actually tags you 🙂) The Ping G400 is the standard model, not SFT. The hosel is in neutral and there was no adjustment when I bought it, so I guess the lie angle should be the standard. "As far as getting weight out to the toe instead of the heel". So the process is moving the weight, not adding/removing weight from the head, right? That should be doable then. The Ping driver comes with a wrench. I can try it on G400 first. I don't think I will mess with the shaft though. Thanks for the clarification on the shaft. I didn't know 5G meant the 5th generation. I found this Callaway Paradym Triple Diamond Drivers, that seems to match the shaft (gen 4 of course).  10.5° Graphite 6.0 Project X HZRDUS GEN 4 Black 60 Graphite The standard lie angle of Paradym seems to be 57 degree. I found this graph on Titleist website about SureFit. C-4 means 0.75 degree flat which matches what you said about what the fitter did. I'm not sure if I can adjust the lie angle from 57 to 60.25. That sounds like a big gap. 57 seems to be the standard lie angle for all Callaway drivers 😞 Is it a no-no for Callaway drivers for me? Again, thanks a lot for your time!
    • Day 4: 2/11/25 Weight shift drills and indoor chipping tonight.
    • Where is your current driver set?  The PING G400 is relatively upright compared to the lion's share of other drivers out there. Normal setting is a 58 degree lie angle. The GT1 comes standard with a 59 degree lie angle. Your fitter may have lowered it up to a degree and a half so possibly 60.5 degree lie angle. Which is pretty flat. That may be part of what helped you avoid the hooks.  Also if your PING G400 is the SFT model that's designed to fight the fade and promote a draw, which it sounds like you don't need.  As far as getting weight out to the toe instead of the heel. A lot of drivers have that feature. Callaway Epic and Epic Flash are older models that certainly give you that ability.  A Hzrdus shaft in 6.0, 60 grams is really pretty common. You probably won't get Gen5 but I'm not sure there's that much difference.  For example:  Callaway Golf EPIC FLASH 9.0* Driver Stiff Flex HZRDUS Smoke Black 60 Shaft Condition: 7 out of 10 - Good: These clubs/iron sets have been played in an appropriate fashion. The wear is typical for an item of similar model/age and has been well taken care of to date. Ball wear is visible only on the face... Good luck.  Let us know how it comes out. Oh, by the way, welcome to the forum. 👍
