The courses I golf at only have the mats to hit off of. For some reason I just can't hit of those things well. Fortunatly I have a soccer field right by my house that I can hit 150yrd shots on.

Every course that I have played around here has a grass range, however the playable area seems to constantly shrink.

The grass range at my home course has a hitting area that is 100 yards wide and 30 yards deep... almost as big as a football field. It needs to be that large so that there is enough time for a section to heal before they have to move the tees back there again. The whole back row of the range is concrete pads with mats, for days when it's too wet and for practicing during the off season when the grass is dormant. There is also a separate lesson tee area so that all of the range hitting stations are always available to the public.

We also have a separate area with 2 greens for chipping, short (50 yards and in) pitching, and bunker practice. And over near the first tee is the large putting green where no chipping is allowed.

The closest course to me (5 minutes) has a grass range. The balls are a little expensive when compared to other places, but I guess I'm paying for the grass.

Out of the five closest to me, only one has mats and that's a par 3 course.

A quote from Kris
...is that college bball really isn't "lower tier". The better teams have their rosters filled with guys who could play in the NBA. hell, guys used to come straight from high school to the NBA. I really don't think there's much of a difference skill-wise between the two.

Hell I'd pay $10 for 60 balls on grass instead of $6 for 60 on mats...

The closest range has a grass area but its pretty bad. Can only use it for tee'd shots since the rest is just hard dirt. Theres another one near by but they charge extra for using the grass part. Most of the courses here have grass ranges.

The range I'm a member at has grass. It's top of the line conditions and practice facilties. It's 15 minutes from my house; if I drive really fast I can get there in 10 but it can get dangerous.

Everywhere around here within 10 miles or so has grass and mats. All the courses only have grass ranges. Most of the ranges are mainly grass but some have a few mats also. Outside the 10 miles, many places still have grass just not as many.

If I were very wealthy, and that's in the New York City sense, it would be much higher - think Winged Foot, Westchester CC, etc...

But hey, I guess I could just dump a shag bag in Central Park and swing away. You there on the beach towels reading the Times - fore!
