Oh, I wasn't offended Nickynoodles, it's all good. BTW I gave myself a D+ (have a long way to go to get to single digits)

Took me about 1 year of daily practice (120 balls on the range + chipping and putting).

My putting moved up a grade level today from F to S. It just sucked today. That's an improvement.

Good idea for a thread. Im going to judge myself on how well i think i should be playing and if a get straight A +s then ive fulfilled my potential.

Driver B- Hitting it prety well but too many bad strikes

Irons A- Hitting them really well. Best part of my game at the moment

Short Game C+ Its alright but know i can do better

Putter C Not putting well at the moment, can't drain those 3,4 footers

Overall B-B] Getting reasonable Scores but nowhere near as consistent as i know i can be

Oh, I wasn't offended Nickynoodles, it's all good. BTW I gave myself a D+ (have a long way to go to get to single digits)

I dont even know why i wrote that. I must have been in a wierd mood or something because now after i read what i wrote it sounds like im some kind of Dou**ebag. I dont know what the heck i was thinking about when i posted it. I also meant to give myself an overall B-. I gave myself a B by mistake. Im at a B- right now because my irons have been inconsistant. Not horrible, just not as good as i would like them to be. I took a lesson with a friend of mine who is a PGA Pro teacher last Saturday on my Irons and feel a little better with my ball striking. Im going to see him on Friday and next Saturday again and im hoping to hit the course and see what improvements i have made. I wish we didnt have such poor weather here where i live. Most of the ranges around here have been closed since Christmas.

I'm going to give you a little advice. There's a force in the universe that makes things happen. And all you have to do is get in touch with it, stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball.

Driver - D (Maybe even worse, no consistency whatsoever. Fortunately my 3 Wood play is pretty good. I can hit 13 out of 14 fairways with it so 3W gets an A-)
Iron - C (Not as good as it needs to be, not as bad as it has been)
Short game - C (Chipping, wedges, pitching all good, bunker play not as good as it should be)
Putter - B
Overall - C (Probably a fair grade for my handicap. Had a frustrating golf year. Didn't improve as I would have liked. I had stretches of 10 holes during rounds where I was even or +1 but would then double and bogey the other 8 holes to finish at +10. Didn't have a lot of time to practice this year with the arrival of baby number 2 but I'm back every week now and looking forward to 2010. Single figures here I come).

After 15 years off, let's see how I did.

Driver: C+
avg. 202 yards off the tee, 35 % fairways hit, by far the longest I've ever hit a driver and the new tech made my frequent mishits playable

Woods: D
good out the bunkers, mediocre at best from the rough, lousy in the fairway and off the tee where it was as inaccuarate as the driver, looking into hybrids

Long/ mid irons: C
a few mishits and accuracy was a problem, but my best striking of the 4-7i ever

Short irons: C-
distance was good, left/ right accuracy was not

short game: C
sw iffy at best especially the partial ones, bunker play spotty, long bump and runs improved greatly as the year went on, lobs improved too, simple chips were great

putter: C
under 6 feet great, 6-15 foot putts not made often enough, long putts not good especially on the speed side

course management: B+
did a great job avoiding the X, recovery play from the trees was very good, choked a few times late in the round

overall: C+
there may be room for improvement, but 14 is the lowest handicap I've ever had

Short game / wedges C+
Putter A-

Overall---- B to B+
My wedge game really needs work from 30 yards in and bunker play. I took my Index from 12.8 to 7.8 this summer. I throw a lot of shots away with my poor bunker play and pitching.

Driver: C- Last round I managed to not duff any balls off the tee, but I lacked distance, pushing the ball most of the time. Some guys in my group with less experience than me were hitting their 3 woods further off the tee (and they had no confidence in their driver swings).
Irons: C+ Half the time I hit a decent shot, the other half I push or top the ball. But when I make contact the ball usually goes straight. My 3 wood contact is pretty good off the turf.
Wedges: C- Same issues with my irons - inconsistent, but I usually make contact. Bunker play still needs a lot of work.
Putting: B- Last round I only 3-putted one green. Managed to make one 15' putt. Still need a lot of work on green reading and swing tempo.

Overall: C

I'm confident enough to play a round with all my clubs, but still have some swing issues to work out.

2011 Goals:
* Improve club-head speed to 90 mph with the driver
* Ensure increased speed does not compromise accuracy
* Prevent overextending on the back-swing (left-arm is bending too much at the top)
* Relax arms initially at address ( too tense)* Play more full rounds (failed from 2010)

  • 4 weeks later...
Driver B i can hit far and hit 65 % of fairways last year average of 272 yards but i cannot shape it on command or hit a low stinger into the wind very well at all wind takes 20 yards of my ball

sorry guys i was grading myself on how good you have to be to go somewhere, bc i am a cocky 14 year old that still thinks he has a chance to at-least play some university golf at a high grade school. and i strongly belive putting in 4 hours of practice and 18 holes everyday in the summer for the next few will get me there p.s. i am guessing from reading my posts your think spoiled little rich kid mommy and daddy pay for everything and all he does is play golf. well i actually have a part time job at Tim Hortons its not much but its something. and i payed for my membership last year although i am very privileged.

Driver A- Fairly long and mostly in the short grass
Irons C- I can't get mid/short iron shots close to the pin with any consistency
Short game / wedges C Just adequate
Putter B+ Rarely 3-putt, but need to make more from 10 feet and under.

Driver C on average but it can be anywhere from D to A on any given day (but days of D are getting rarer--thank god!)
Iron B to A (This is what saves my butt most of the time)
Short game B
Putter B on average, but this too can vary a lot from D to A (but mostly around B)
Overall game C+ to B-

For the last couple of weeks, I have been concentrating on my driver on the range...

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

This is a pretty cool thread

Driver- C Usually hit the FW but will get the slice from time to time. Still workin' on that
Irons- B- Straight, about 85% distance, can land around the green somewhere gotta work on getting all of the club into the swing.
Short game B- Most of this time this is my PW(only wedge I have at the moment) I have the roll down need to work on fine tuning the accuracy.
Putting C- Can judge distance fairly well need to tweak my elevation game, get a two putt around every 8 holes or so. Most of the time though it's a 3 putt. Working on that too.
Overall game Hmm..I would say C Not the worst but could definately be better

    • Someone asked would pros accept someone else keeping score. It’s done in every other sport. That’s what scorekeepers are for. It’s an antiquated rule. It’s fine for non-professionals.  I feel like there is a lot of resistance to rule in golf, as if these rules were brought down on stone tablets by Moses.
    • Y'all can appoint a few good men from your own league that have proper understanding of the rules or at least access the USGA rules (book, online, etc.) when necessary. They don't have to have some kind of official certification or blessings from any outside org/entity to my knowledge.  Yes, y'all could have collectively declared it GUR under F-16 as @DaveP043 posted as the self appointed committee and you would have been fine to drop outside of this particular bunker. Remember to not declare all bunkers as GUR on a wholesale basis. It is case by case only.  Now you might say 'who's got time for all that' (going around which bunkers should be declared GUR) then I can somewhat understand  your pain but at the same time you cannot fault the tedium of rules  enforcement as a general reason to declare them 'lacking in common sense'.
    • Its simple, YOU are responsible for reporting YOUR score correctly, at every level of golf.  Do you imagine a top pro would really trust anyone else with his score? Without getting too far from the original post, the Rules have been revised every 4 years for decades.  They're continually evaluated, and most changes are in response to changes within the game.  BTW, if wind blows your ball off the green before you've lifted and replaced it, you play from wherever it ends up.  The TV call ins weren't a rule of golf issue, they were a PGA Tour issue, all in an effort to get the call right.
    • Someone asked what I propose. I think if the bunker is full of rainwater, you get to drop it with no penalty directly in back of the bunker, so you still have a tricky shot of chipping over the bunker. People are talking about local committees and such which we just don’t have at our level. My league and playing partners gave the free drop with no issue. My original purpose of this post was just to understand what the “real” rule is, and I now know. But now I also want to encourage people to see that many long time golf rules are outdated and illogical, and hopefully encourage people to push for change. They made some changes in the last few years, so I’m hopeful the game I love will improve if enough people speak out. A lot to hope for posting in a little forum I know, but you have to start somewhere.
    • You get a penalty stroke because your local committee didn't do their job, they didn't address the specific conditions using the tools available to them within the Rules.  The rulemakers contemplated just this situation, bunkers being so filled with Temporary Water that they're unplayable.  The only way to address it "fairly" is to allow free relief outside the bunker, and they do NOT want to allow that on an everyday basis.  So they write the rules as it is, and allow the Committee to override the normal rule in the rare instance where the bunker really is full.  That's what your "local league" does, they invoke Model Local Rule F-16, which treats flooded bunkers as both GUR and as General Area.  Relief from GUR in the General Area allows relief in the General Area (i.e. outside the re-defined bunker).  Its quite a logical way to approach a relatively rare situation. Separately, consider your concern about temporary Water in the fairway.  I've seen situations in relatively level fairways where the Nearest Point of Complete Relief  from Temporary Water is 30 or 40 yards away, further from the green, even in the rough.
