I have always kept total score as a big number, and putts in the lower right hand corner as a smaller number. My question for those of you that keep score as a measurement of what to improve upon, how do you keep the score so that its easy to read later when you tabulate it all up? I feel that the parts of my game that are the worst is my lag putting, and approach shots (120-140 yards and not being on the surface)

I know that scorecard's program is an excellent way to tabulate everything later, but when you are "on the course, with a pencil and score card" what do you do to keep tabs on your game?

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

I keep score in my head. +1 +2 etc...I dont deal with total number. I just add or sometimes even subtract the number in my head from par for that course.

I keep my own score card and use the other "players" squares to record, fairways hit (L,H,R), GIR, Putts, and this year I will be keeping putts after chip.

The scorecard application has an explanation of a good way to do it in the manual.

I basically follow that. So for me its

Box 1 - In big number I put the score for the hole. In the top right is an arrow indicating whether I hit the fairway or in which direction I missed. Then in the bottom left corner is the number of putts

Box 2- Is where I will mark either a GIR, Up and down or sand save and then in the bottom left I will mark the distance of my first putt

I just keep score in my head as well. My buddies and I will ask throughout the round, "where are you?" and the answer is always an integer of how many strokes over / under par we are through that given hole.

I don't keep score, Judge.

-Then how do you measure yourself with other golfers?

By height.

alas, for me at this point it's just total strokes per hole, with mental notes about what really killed certain holes. Missed greens are a given, but the score killers are usually disasters in bunkers & 3^jacks.

I keep my own scorecard usually and make tickmarks, slashes, curves, and letters for each shot. Shots right get a /, left get a \, slices or banana balls get a (, water shots get a W to designate the penalty, bunkers get an S for sand, puts get a p. At the end of a round I can see fairly clearly where my problems were. At the end of each hole I'll talley up the marks on the way to the next tee.

Golfshot iPhone app... really nice layout and FREE!
The application includes total shots, putts, club used off tee, fairway (hit, left, right, short, long), Sand Shots, Penalties.
Puts all the figures in cool graphs and pi charts too...
I used to do what most have said... lots of little symbols indicating stats... iPhone is much easier!

http://cynicalpeak.com/scorecard/ And yeah, that's how I keep score too. Except all of my little numbers are on the right side: top-right for fairway, bottom right for putts, bottom right for putt distance.

Top box is score, second is either a check or an arrow showing where I missed the fairway, third is either a check or an arrow showing where i missed the green, fourth is a number of putts with the first putt distance in the top right corner, and the fifth is either UD or SS if applicable, and I scratch them out if they are unsuccessful.

It is a lot but I use the Scorecard app and I do everything as I am walking between holes so I don't hold anyone up. If there is no time between holes I do it on the next fairway. Walking helps this, if I used a cart there would be no time.

I'll usually just keep score regularly with a circle for birdie, square for bogey, etc. and then go through my round again afterwards marking up the scorecard. In the box below the score I'll usually just go through each hole and put and F if I hit the fairway and a G if I hit the green and add them up out of the total. Then I'll go through total number of putts on each hole, and while I do this I also make marks, a big black dot on a hole if I threw away a stroke and a slash mark for a half a stroke (a shot where maybe its a hard up and down) to see how many mistakes I'm making. I don't always do sand saves, but sometimes I'll add those up too. Just got a Garmin Approach G5, might mess around with the scoring thing on that to see how it works, but don't think it does much more than just keep score.

I do this, but if you keep track of your putts that will automatically tell you whether or not you made it on in regulation in comparrison to par (one less stat to jot down). I've been playing primarily in a league lately so I've been keeping score in my head. The person in the group with the card keeps track of everyone's score and points total. What I've been doing is after I get home I'll sit down at the computer and put down the round's stats from memory. I use my point total as a way to double check my memory, but if I do this a few hours after my round I don't have any trouble recalling the round. I've been keeping stats like this for almost 2 years and it's kind of become second nature to me I guess?
