Smoking on a course?

I played Cowboys in Grapevine, TX a few months ago (it was freezing but absolutely worth it) and my dad and I let a couple of guys play through while we were lolly gagging in some political discussion of some sort I'm sure, though memory may not be serving correctly with that inadequate and completely irrelevant factoid.... Anyways, sorry -- One of the older guys we let play through was smoking a cigar while he was teeing off.

I didn't think much of it at the time because it's a really nice course that I don't feel comfortable at, really. Like I just immediately assume everyone playing there has more of a right to be there than I do -- it's not an insecurity as much as it's that I'm just not used to the really snazzy courses. I just assumed he had a right to do whatever he wanted.

Today, though, I was at the driving range and smelled a cigar and saw a guy a ways away smoking one between shots.

Is this considered rude? I personally like the smell of cigars, but know it offends some people. Just looking for your .02... I mean it's outdoors so it seems like it's ok but really other than Texas Rangers baseball -- Ron Washington always steps off camera for a few drags -- Cigarettes are only seen with pool and bowling though definitely not on the professional level for either... Was just curious.

I think cigars are okay but not in like a major tournament or something, just for a casual round with the friends if they don't mind or want to partake as well. John Daly will pull out the ole' Marlboro's from time to time :)

I lived in Grapevine for 4 years, it's not the best place to compare societal norms. But to answer your question, no, it's not considered rude at all. You're outside, and smoking of any kind is perfectly legal. I don't like smoking, or the smell of cigarettes, but I don't really care if someone smokes them on the course. It's fairly common for guys to smoke cigars on the course here.

I was in my clubs pro shop and another member walks in smoking a cigar, lol this thing was at least a foot long, but anyways, I asked him if he would take the muffler pipe outside, or I could shove it up his ass to extinguish it, needless to say he made a B-line for the door ...... so is it rude? absolutely

I don't mind it as long as they don't blow smoke in my face. You need to have fair boundaries with things like that. It's legal, but it can be rude if someone is blowing it in your face

Haha I know just pullin' on your chain. Given the arguements I've seen on threads vs. slacks I wasn't sure where cigars would fall. Personally I like slacks and cigars so I guess I'll be happy in the future... On my less high-class courses, no doubt.

Couldn't care less about people smoking on the course or range.......IF THEY THROW THE DAMN BUTTS IN THE TRASH!!!. I hate seeing trash on the roadside let alone on a golf course.

Of course it's OK, you are outside. If anyone has a problem with that, they can go lock themselves in their house, and leave normal people to enjoy the world.

That's not really the scenario the OP asked. What you described is certainly rude. Lighting a cigar or even cigarette up on a course is a totally different thing.

I like to light up a cigar every now and then when I play. If I'm riding, I always ask my partner if they mind. I just consider that good manners. I also make sure never to ash near a green.

Good question.....I live in Plano, but I have yet to play Cowboys.....if you'd like to hook up for a round, shoot me a PM, you are welcome to bring your pops along....

Smokers rights and responsibilities - yes, you can smoke outside.....if you are riding with someone, you should always ask if they are OK with it......also, you need to pay attention and avoid blowing into peoples faces on the tee box.....additionally, you should throw away of your butts properly......as mentioned, you SHOULD NOT light up nor drag your cigars in the clubhouse, someone elses car, and so forth.... Non-smokers rights and responsibility - yes, the guy who rides with you in a cart should ask first.....also, he should not blow smoke in your face nor light up in your car and he needs to pay attention to where his ashes are going.....you DO NOT have the right to be a complete azzhole just because you got a whiff of a cigar from a player in your group.....golf is a gentlemen's game (ladies too), and real man or woman also understands and respects tolerance of others......I've seen a d-bag make a big scene about cigar smoke, finish the round, then ride off in his straightpiped F350 diesel, black-smoking any car within 20 feet.....unfortunatley, some non-smokers go completely over the top and hypocritical at times - don't be that guy.... For the record, I smoke a very rare cigar, but usually not on the golf course....I like to smoke on the patio where I can relax with a friend....I don't like to waste them on the course because I am busy playing golf

Less smoking on the course... Maybe that's why I can't break 90 anymore. There's no cigarette butts on the tee and fairway to use as aiming points for alignment.

Seriously, cigars are OK, as long as you throw the butts away. And, don't lay it on the green and create a burn mark.

As for the Senior Tour, I believe Tom Wargo was the first stogie smoker to become famous. Anyone else remember?

I'd definitely recommend it, their signature hole is a Par 4 with a really neat view... Definitely fun to play. I've gotta finish up finals here in a couple of weeks then work my rear off before I'll have the luxury of even thinking about playing there again

I'll definitely be returning as soon as I can though -- will let you know for sure.
