IF Phil Mickelson wins The Players championship this week and Tiger will finish out of top 5, he will supplant Tiger Woods as no. 1 in the world. I believe Tiger Woods can still pull this off.

Certainly he can. That said, Phil will be the first one to tell everyone that becoming No. 1 is a bit of an "empty achievement" given Tiger's recent health and personal issues -- he would much rather become No. 1 when Tiger is fully healthy and competing on a more regular basis.

But....No. 1 in the world is No. 1 in the world....nothing to apologize for.

I'm rooting for Phil. I used to dislike him, but Lefty has won me over. I don't care where Tiger's game is right now, it has to feel great to be #1 in the world.

Who won't win? Tiger who's coming off a missed cut or Phil who's coming off a major and 4 solid rounds. My money would be on phil winning over tiger. I have nothing against tiger but I don't think he will get his full game back this year. Everyone forgets he is probably still going to go through a divorce involving kids which is tough mentally. I do think that Mickelson will pass him this year no matter what because tiger will probably shut it down until the open.

I think Phil will overtake Tiger sometime this year.

I don't think it will happen this weekend.

I don't know about Phil taking over this week but I think he will over take #1 this year. I don't think Phil will win this week, maybe a top 10 but I don't know that he will finish top 5. Watching Golf Channel it just seems that Tiger is really struggling right now and Hank is nowhere to be found. Should be interesting to see where he finishes this week.

Sorry Tigger fans, but he isn't the same guy he was a few years back. But please keep quoting them stats of yore. This game has changed, and like it or not, Phil's the guy to beat each week now. He'll have that number 1 ranking very soon.

I think Phil will be in contention this week, and there is a possibility of Tiger missing the cut again, or just playing poorly and ending up far down the lists. His swing is just not good, his first practice round was not good. I would not be amazed if Phil found himself on the top of the OWGR at Monday.

I see Phil making it to No.1 this year at some point. Tiger is still Tiger and he could win anytime he plays, but he has a lot going on right now and I don't think there is any longer the Tiger intimidation factor on the course, not that I think Phil was ever really worried about Tiger all that much.

I don't think Phil will win this week, but I'm sure Tiger will finish out of the top 5. I wouldn't be surprised to see him miss the cut again.

Tiger being #1 is cool, it seems powerful and important. Phil as #1 will be similar to the LPGA #1, who cares, who notices. Phil has so little personal charisma that he will emasculate the cache of being #1.

Good Post. One thing that I love is people downplaying the significance of Phil taking number 1. The last person to do so was VJ and that was in 2003. For anyone to reach number one during the Tiger era is a great feat.

Even if phil statisically becomes #1, he still wont be the real #1. It would be kind of empty.
