I get about 2, maybe 3, pars a game. I hit almost no GIRs. I usually get one of the par 3s just by teeing off well and one of the par 4s when I can actually get a good long drive and good long iron back-to-back.

(I've actually been shooting under my posted handicap for a few games, I'll update my handicap soon-ish.)

Same here, but that's the deal with high handicappers like us. We miss way too many greens and we don't get up & down. For the most part I tee off well and get my second within 100 yds of the green but that's when it all falls apart. Sitting 80yds away in 2 but needing 4 to get in makes for a frustrating round.

How are you only a 16.8 handicapper?

What is your idea of dropping a shot? From where I sit, you drop at least 11 shots per round.

That was my math too - perhaps he meant 9 hole rounds and misplaced a decimal in his index?!?

No, I think he means as a mid-capper, a bogey is the norm on the harder holes.

im lucky to get 1-2 pars every 9, make mostly bogeys and always end up having a terrible hole where i make an 8 or something. I dont play 18 that often, usually just 9, the best i ever did for 9 holes was a 42(+6) with 3 pars, a birdie, 4 bogeys, and one triple, ironically the triple coming on the first hole, somehow i recovered after that and only shot +3 for the last 8 holes. My best 18 hole score was I think a 94, and that was on a par 70 course.

I generally average about 4 or 5 pars per round right now. I have rounds, like the last, where I can make 7 pars per round. For me, my index is dropping fast... but my issue is that I have the blowup holes. Last weekend, I was playing great... right in the thick of things for low net title that day... and then on the 16th hole... I posted a 10 on a par 5 because I blasted a drive into fescue and couldn't find it. My provisional landed in a trap. My 4th shot went into an environmental area (hazard). Drop. 6th shot into a trap. On in 7 and needed 3 putts from 28 feet. I also ended up carding an 8 on the final hole (par 4) when I put the ball in a hazard twice.

So... inconsistency is my issue, for sure.

For inconsistency see my round today; 9 pars, 4 bogies, 4 doubles, and a triple.

How are you only a 16.8 handicapper?

I've got all that beat. My handicap index is currently 32.8. Lately I've been averaging 2 or 3 pars per 9-hole round, so 4-6 per 18 (the occasional 18-hole round bears this out).

The relation of "number of pars" and "current index" boils down to your volatility.

That's pretty much it. My typical round is 2 or 3 pars, maybe a bogey, and the rest double or triple. So something like 2*0 + 1 + 4*2 + 2*3=+15 for 9, so +30 for 18. My usual courses are pretty close to 66/113 ratings, so +30 is not a great score. I've been improving a bit lately, so the triples are becoming less frequent and the pars are perhaps more common in the last half dozen rounds, but that's really only seen my handicap index come down from 36.4 (the limit) to 32.8.

The unusual thing is that I don't do much worse on harder courses. I played 18 on a 70/122 course and shot a ~25 differential. I think this is evidence that my game is a pretty good one marred by regular complete failures---when I'm good, I'm good, and when I'm bad, it's going to roll 20 yards. As a result, I tend to hit enough good shots on each hole to make a bogey, but there are some stupid bad shots in between on many/most holes. I can, and regularly do, hit 240 yard drives, 170 yard 4 irons, and wedges from 80-100 yards to < 10 feet, but I don't often chain more than two good shots in a row, particularly between the tee shot and the approach. I'm really trying to work on consistency, and it's been getting better, but there's a long way to go...

Maybe this has been answered many times, what is the break up of low/mid/high h'cappers? Is it single digit/teens/20+?

Based on what I've read here, I think it depends on who you ask. Like always, the people who are good compared to the general population have a different definition of "good" than the general population. If you asked me, that's about how I'd divvy it up (single/teens/20+). But I think that a lot of the single digit handicappers disagree, though, and break it up more like 6-/6-15/15+. I've seen a couple 15-handicappers called "high" handicappers.

This year I've been averaging one par every five holes. Not much, but I don't really get a lot of doubles either, just boring bogies usually. I've had two rounds of 9 this year that were all bogies.

I often score 5-6 pars and still end up over 100. Penalty strokes just kill me, and when you throw a few 8's on the card, its easy to drive the final score up. I've had streaks of 8,8,4,3,8,8 way too many times.
