PW always until now and I'm good with it but I'll want to be adding wedges to my bag and making use of them.

I'm curious what club other players use most of the time for chipping in the following two situations. 1) Just off the green where you dont need carry much rough and you just want to get the ball rolling. 2) Farther off the green, where you need to get the ball high and land it a little softer.

1) If its on the fringe with good condition fringe, with out something like 5 feet of fringe, i will putt the ball.

Other wise it depends, short sided i will take my PW, the more green the lower the loft i go down to about an 8-iron in some cases 2) Rough, sandwedge because it gets through it easier with the bounce, less likely to chunk it. If its in the fairway i will use either a lob wedge for over bunkers and water, or my PW to 9-iron.

I will etiher use the 56º or 60º 100% of the time. They are pretty close to split 50/50 on use. It just depends on what feels more comfortable standing over the shot or what I have been more successful with that day under the conditions. Last week I was playing and was having trouble getting the bite I wanted with the 56º due to the green conditions. My first shot with the 60º that day I chipped in.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

99.9% of the shots are done with my 60. Anything else around the green that I didn't use the 60 for, I've putted. Yes, I've even putted out of rough when close to the green. Make more of a "chip" swing and kind of pop the ball up a tad and it will work pretty well.

My philosophy on golf "We're not doing rocket science, here."

Hey , I'm in springfield also! We played Branson Creek today for the first time, what a great course. Other favorite area course is Hidden Valley... we go to Horton and Payne, but they aren't too great IMO (I used to work at Payne). Where do you like to play? John

Anywhere except sand within 75 yards and in I am using a 60*. I love using it for full shots, chips, flops, bump and runs, you name it. The only problem is from bunkers I tend to get too far underneath the ball with the 60* so in that instance I use my sandwedge for bounce purposes.

1. My Cleveland Niblick 49* unless I'm in some weird grass that is laying in the direction opposite of where I'm hitting. In that case, I'd use a 5i. Against the grain of the rough grass is my least favorite shot on the course.

2. It all depends on the lie and where the pin is. Usually any of my wedges...

I dont descriminate...usually its a SW or if I have to get it rolling a high iron or putter........

If I ever get happy with myself for finishing 12th or 15th, someone needs to put my clubs away and I'll take up tiddlywinks.

1) 54 occasionally bumping down to PW
2) 60

As mhernickson said,

I'm curious what club other players use most of the time for chipping in the following two situations.

1) Just off the green where you dont need carry much rough and you just want to get the ball rolling.
Probably an 8i; if grass is a little shaggy, a PW

2) Farther off the green, where you need to get the ball high and land it a little softer.
Probably a GW or a SW. Deciding factor would be how long the grass is, and how the ball is setting up.

In No. 2, you may be talking about a pitch and run.. ball pops up and rolls, or a pitch and stop , ball flies most of way and checks up. Among us old-timers, a chip shot implies you're relying on shallow take-off at impact and mostly roll for distance.

Focus, connect and follow through!

1. A 52* wedge---Less that 10 yards I put it way back in stance and pop it. Lots of backspin but enough speed to take the break out. Then it slows and just stops. Made a lot em with this shot.

2. A 56* or 60* wedge. Depends on lie and mood. A feel thing

52° in almost all situations. Exception would be if I have a lie in soft, thick rough where I'm worried that my low-bounce 52° might dig in, when I'll use my 56°•SW or my 60° which has very high bounce (though I usually reserve this for chipping out of real grunge since it's sort of a beater club and the head is like a huge chunk of lofted metal, it's great to have that momentum when you're in heavy underbrush).

If I want roll-out, I'll deloft the 52° and play the ball further back. If I want less roll, I play it forward with its full loft. I find this easier to control than trying to pick a club to chip with. The only exception is if I'm chipping out of trees back to the fairway, in which case I'll usually use my 8I.

1. 54 or if fringe putter
2. 60/54/PW depending on distance

If I want to get it rolling quick, either my hybrid or 50, depending on length of grass the ball's on. If I have to carry something, I'll use my 54 and play it up a touch.
