I shanked three in a row today while I was working on my new Stack & Tilt swing and I was almost reduced to tears.

I actually thought about this if it would come useful being able to hit a shank on purpose - e.g. if you are blocked by a tree or if you need to shape it, but you are in the thick stuff where you dont get any spin on it anyways. Those are the practical things i could think about when shanking on purpose would be useful.

But if you want to do this to "increase" the bets a bit on the first tee, you definetly should work on topping your driver a couple of feet in front you so that everybody on the range can see your duffed balls right in front of you. And then you need to finish it off with some nice T-bone steak like divots that are pointing 30° left - and you have yourself a payday .

Did anybody here ever on purpose did "sandbag" somebody like that? That could make for some intresting stories.

It's funny, because the shank has never really been a problem for me, not for many years. When I was a kid, I'd hit the type where the ball went 2 feet forward, and 100 feet right. Now, when I haven't hit balls for like a month, I shank about 10 of the first 20 balls on the range when I go to warm up. It's quite funny. I hit those really hard, 45° shanks that fly pretty well, start fairly straight, but veer nearly dead right.

I even have videos of these shanks. The reason is a simple swing fault, one that I will correct soon. My back straightens, and my head rises during the swing. It's merely a setup problem, my back is at about 56° at contact, but 48° at address. Once I fix it, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. I've reduced it over the years, but it still has further to go. It's funny how the little things you do can really affect your swing. Certain tour pros have certain mishits, just like we do.

It dawns on me that this is an incredibly useful shot to have in the bag. When the range's know-it-all wants to give you unsolicited advice on your swing, especially with others (who he's talked to) watching, you can say, "like this?" and proceed to hit this shot. Repeat for all his advice, insist you're doing what he's saying. Problem solved.

  • 4 years later...

Really like this thread, so I thought I`ll bump it up.

Off season for me and been working on the range with a local teaching pro and Im swinging freely and much better than during the season.

I think just trying new things and not worrying about  specific target has really freed up my swing and Im able to increase my swing speed as well.

Now, I be hitting ball solid and swinging freely then out of a sudden I get a shank.  Never shank once during the summer on the course.

It`s funny when I'm on the course, I get a bit `tighter`` and  I dont swing as well but I dont shank.

When i'm loosing up on the the range I swing much more freely but I get the occasional shank.

Guess you have to take the good with the bad sometimes.

    • Yeah, negative PCC days are more likely to be counted in the best 8, but the PCC decreases the downward impact of these scores, as it increases your posted differential.  As for the conditions, it really is funny how the scores posted don't always reflect what seem like tough conditions.   Its clear that you thrive in difficult conditions.
    • I guess someone decided to do more work for little benefit then.  I might be the lucky one then. I have a +3 and a +1 on my counted scores.
    • I've only seen one positive PCC since it began, a +3 during a tournament on a tough, firm course with the wind blowing at least 30 mph. A scratch golfer got so frustrated he pulled out after 9. Sadly, the +3 did nothing for me as I was a good 10-12 strokes above the score counting. Currently 3 of my last 7 scores have a negative PCC. Of course, all 3 of those are in my best eight. I'm puzzled, as the wind was blowing pretty good on at least two of those rounds.
    • It changed to the best 8 of the last 20, in the 2020 changes.  When I attended a Handicapping Workshop in 2020, we were told that they anticipated that the PCC would apply in about 10% of the rounds.  That's about what I see now, maybe slightly more often since the algorithm was tweaked not long ago.  And remember, the PCC will adjust MOST of the scores on a given day towards the mean.  With a positive PCC (more high scores), most players scores wouldn't be in the best 8/20 even with the PCC, so the impact is nothing, although the few players who had a good day will see the impact on their HI increased.   I believe it will be very rare that a player has even two scores in their best 8 with any kind of PCC.
    • There was a PCC of +3 at Talamore the day I played in Pinehurst! Somehow that course was killing us all, lol.  If it is still the best 10 out of 20, So, it would amount to .1. It matters more if you end up with like 5 out of 10 of your counted differentials having PCC. That could equal a full stroke.  Yea, I think it will influence handicaps like 0 to let's say 2 for handicaps.
