For amateurs who have not fully ingrained the fundamentals to try s&t; is ridiculous and only leads to frustration. I would not recommend s&t; to anyone.
Even pro's have left the s&t; concept in droves stating the loss in distance-especially with driver-and inconsistency with the method caused them to leave for the traditional swing.
No wonder there is frustration with the game.

Yup.

The original post contains so little actual information (and what information is has is incorrect) that it's not even worth further response. keiko, if you can come up with something worth discussing, please do. This ain't it.

Are you suggesting that a long hitter could incorporate some S&T moves (if he doesn't already have them) and any loss in driving distance would be compensated by the increase in consistency / accuracy?

Since switching to S&T I've seen nothing but improvement in my swing. I've never hit my irons better or more consistently than I am right now. Even though I really don't have the money for lessons at this point, the S&T DVDs and book are wonderful and just using that as well as some information posted here I've seen positive results. I don't really think of S&T as its own swing but rather a compilation of good swing mechanics. As anybody who has truly looked at S&T will tell you all of the great players have had elements of S&T in their own swings.

I disagree that it is a bad place for amateurs to start as well... The book and DVDs alone are a valuable resource and gives solid information... much more than you could get yourself bashing bucket after bucket. On top of that, using the fault tree in the book you can use your misses to figure out what is going on in your swing and make the necessary adjustments. This is much better for an amateur than reading golf tips in GD or whatever magazine and trying to incorporate that with tips from the Golf Channel... half the time those tips are way off anyways. Obviously for those with the financial resources to take lessons that is the way to go, but for those that can't S&T and the book and DVDs in particular are a great place to start.

So, to sum it up, S&T is not bad for golf... it's actually quite the opposite.

There has ALWAYS been frustration with this game! Before anyone even came up with the term, "Stack and Tilt". Before computer analysis and teaching 'methods', before launch-angle monitors, before GPS and range-finders.

IMO - The Amateur's number one frustration comes not from distance, but from inconsistent contact (fat / thin / topped, etc). The 'traditional' method of 'shift the weight' only adds to that inconsistent contact. From my (so far) limited "S&T" knowledge, this 'newer' (yet still fundamentally old) way of swinging takes some of that out of play and should only add to the enjoyment for 'amateurs'.

I have been teaching for some 40 years and did it "the old way" for years. All my "beginning" students now start with a line on the ground (after some grip & posture and alignment basics) and they learn to hit the ground ahead of the line using S&T basics. It is so much easier to advance them now and in my case, the driver goes farther due to more hip and shoulder turn and maintaining the flying wedge....well at least I backed up my statement with facts!

Sorry but i totally disagree with you. I have never hit my Irons as good as i have until I adopted S&T back in June. I haven't loss anyof my Driver distance and I gained 2 clubs with my Irons. I am only missing 1 thing to finally hit my goal this year of breaking 90 and that's been my putting and the only reason its suffuring is due to the fact I have been working on my swing more than anything this year.

I think the OP was trolling for comments. I have read the S&T book, and I can see why it's gaining popularity. I haven't tried it yet since the pro I'm taking lessons from teaches a traditional swing, and I didn't really know what it was until I joined here. I can't imagine it's more frustrating than a traditional swing given your simplifying and / or eliminating some of the movements that can cause tempo issues.

S&T existed long before a marketing team coined the term--take a look at Ben Hogan's swing.

The fundamentals of what has been named Stack and Tilt are the fundamentals to hit the ball the furthest, the most accurately, the most consistently. Regardless of swing method, 99% of amateurs will be frustrated when learning the game. The majority of the pros that have left their "S&T" instructors are worse since leaving. What I find extremely frustrating is that most instructors and the popular golf media including Golf Digest and the Golf Channel don't understand the basics of how a golf ball reacts to the club face and swing path. The majority of their instruction is misinformation or wrong.

What's the majority of two? 1.2 golfers?

Or are you counting Steve Elkington in there too?

Dumb post. I fart in your general direction.

S&T isn't a new thing, kids. It's a new set of concise names for 'old things'.

I strongly disagree. SnT has helped me immensely. I also feel like I understand more about the swing than I ever have.

Going to back up your claim at all?
So far the S&T; record on tour is 9 wins and $30 million in earnings. Andy and Mike teach 10-15 guys on tour.
If S&T; is so bad, why do these players that aren't students of Andy and Mike, swing like this?

    • I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
