thats what Tiger said in this article...

No-I've hit some perfect shots. Bracketed by all kinds of ugly failure, but they've happened.

No, it really doesn't. I've hit some pretty damned nice shots in my day - as good as I can possibly hit. Essentially perfect, in fact.

In spite of what some blowhards say on this site, a lot of people hit shots during their season that professional golfers would be quite satisfied with.

Yep. In fact, I often think to myself "Tiger would take that shot!" after hitting a good shot. Granted, he might have hit a soft 7-iron instead of a regular 6-iron or whatever I hit, but when the ball floats up on the line I pick, lands where I planned it to, and rolls out as I expected, you bet any pro would be happy with a bunch of those shots the next time he played.

Webster's dictionary defines perfection as "freedom from fault or defect," or "flawlessness." Let's look at some of Tiger's words from the article to see what he's talking about

:
...Within a round you can experience a kind of perfection. Maybe it's just one pure shot. ...

Basically, Tiger doesn't define what perfection is. If one thinks of perfection as a state of completeness, then Tiger is hinting (??) that golf performance mixes the good and the bad. See below:

...But what you think is golf perfection might be different from my definition. I can shoot a good number, but know I didn't really play that well -- I just made every putt. Or I can stripe it, but not make a putt and shoot 70.

So, if we look at individual shots, I think we see perfection a couple to times a round, on good days maybe more. If I get a shot to do just what I want it to do, and it meets or exceeds my expectations, then it's a perfect shot. Spot, limited scope bursts of perfection.

* An 8-iron draw back against a left-to-right cross wind, which lands and bites two feet from the cup. A well struck shot.... error rounding decides if it actually goes into the hole, but two feet away crosses the perfection threshold. Sean Miller captures it well:
...In spite of what some blowhards say on this site, a lot of people hit shots during their season that professional golfers would be quite satisfied with. ...

I noticed this today....on every Par 3 Tiger was hitting one less club than Stricker......Hit hit a 169 yard 8 iron. Thats some muscle/ball striking power right there.

i hit what i thought were two perfect shots just this afternoon when playing, an 8 iron and a 5 iron, both of which took the exact line i wanted and landed right where i wanted. hit them both clean, felt flush on the face, didn't feel like i was having to steer the club, none of that garbage. good clean swings and shots that came off just like i imagined them. of course, like someone else said, those two shots were bracketed by a bunch of miserable failures.

Isn't excessive humility the opposite of being a blowhard? What would the correct term for that be, a suckhard?

It's like a circle. Or it is a circle. Can't decide on simile or metaphor.

I didn't take to read the link on tigers comments but i have to think he was splitting hairs on definition. The list of his amazing shots is so long that i just don't believe for momment that he believes it. Recall the 4 iron in the Ryder Cup two years ago when he hit it to 10' on 17 or 18....that was perfect!!!

Since I don't have equipment that rate my shots, I don't know. I do know I've hit better shots every now and then, but who knows if they are perfect.

I've hit perfect shots by anyones judgement. As Erik said earlier, I have had those shots that pros would be proud of and be pleased with the result. I am using two more clubs but the result was exactly as I say it in my mind before hand, contact was perfect. Or those putts you know you just hit perfectly and are on line the whole time and go in the center at perfect speed? That is perfection in golf.

Brian

Not necessarily. A ball spinning around the hole before dropping or slamming in the back is not perfect since it is close to a miss. We can also discuss the meaning of perfect, if it's the result or the shot. For me, it's the shot. A rabbit killer on a short par 3 that end up in the hole is in one way perfect, but in another not. I'm sure Tiger would not call it perfect.

I have never been a tiger fan, and I'm still not because of the bull shit he spouts.

I have always been a tiger fan, and I still am in spite of the bull shit he spouts.
