Now that I think about it, I too notice more when on the range.

I love the irony of the "it doesn't matter what clubs you play, I never look, who cares, etc" posts, followed by signatures describing every stick in ther bag - manufacturer, club, even SHAFT flex for crying out loud. Why not post the brand of grip too? (laughing in amusement, not malicious in any way, as my avatar promotes SC putters) Anyone have 1 3/4 wraps of tape on the grip of the hybrids, changing the swingweight a half point, as well as 13.4024 grams of lead tape on the toe of the backup driver? If so, get it in your sig now!!

yeah, i got so tired of the clutter on this site from everyones "whats in my bag" crap that i disabled that function. looks much cleaner now without that. took off avatars also.

I guess you could look at this both ways
One of the best golfers in Sask. is a member at my old course
Has a staff bag, big wheel push cart, a GPS attached to his cart, all Titleist gear (all the latest as well) blah blah blah....

you know what...dude is a +3 and an amazing golfer as well on staff w Titleist (pretty good for an amateur, right?)

but then there is also a BUNCH of dudes with staff bags, big wheel push carts and range from 10-25 index's
As mentioned before, i tend to watch for the guy w the carry bag, usually dressed decent (not always) and then watch the swing

One morning I joined up w some members i dont know
they wanted to play a small skins match and i said sure
they looked right at my bag, saw my Titleist 735.cm's (combo set w blades from 8-PW) and asked my index
i sorta smiled and said "i shoot in the low 80's or so"....they didnt buy it for one second
their reply was "no one w Titleist blades shoots in the low 80's"...........but i guess we will see

i shot 72 that day and took all their money.....none of them broke 80 and a few of them you could tell were decent low index playes, that didnt bring their A game

I'm usually curious about what other people are playing, although I don't snoop in their bags. Mostly what I see is pretty good gear and I would have to intimidated all the time if it was from their clubs. I'm not one of those who care about "blades vs gi", I've seen too many playing all over the course with either.

Depends....if someone is walking the course with me, I'll usually check their clubs out.....walking seems to breed more spare time and with a push cart/clubs right in front of you, it's hard not to notice.....typically, if everyone else is riding, then I am rarely close to their bag anyway.....if I ride with someone, I might glance at their bag.....just depends on the day, no biggie.....some guys love thier clubs and like to talk about them or their swing, so I'm happy to look and listen....others like to talk about strippers, and I'm ok with that too

I'm intimidated by the guy who stands up on the first box and smooths it out 275 down the middle. Especially if he took a three iron.

The two things that intimidate me, or more accurately that tell me I have no chance under the sun of playing at someone else's level, are the dark spots on the irons and the ease of the swing.

Seeing a bag of perfectly-matched clubs puts my mind at ease a little since I have yet to personally meet a very good player with a perfectly matching bag of clubs. Seeing a bag of old clubs with one brand new one worries me because when I see it it's usually a guy who had his precious, well-performing set of sticks that he couldn't part with but recently he found a wood/hybrid even more awesome than his previous one so he picked it up and now is just that much better for it.

Same criteria I use - unfortunately by that criteria, nobody is ever intimidated by my gear (i.e. ever!).

By that criteria no one will ever be itimidated by my gear. That is why I can play all this old stuff-it has never been hit hard enough or frequently enough on the same spot to wear it out!

Aww, there goes my vintage blade o' the month fix.

I don't care what people are playing on the course, but I quite like seeing what you guys are bagging here.

I enjoy looking at what other people are playing, but don't really get any assumptions from it.

I've had people say to me on the first tee that I must be good since I'm walking and playing forged irons. I chuckled and proceeded to prove them wrong.

Waiting out the 2 feet of snow that just dropped on the course....

One morning I joined up w some members i dont know

So what you are saying is you lied about your handicap, which means you are a sand bagger, you took their money and were happy about it! I know what you are going to say, but when you state you shoot in the low 80's that means you are around a 8 handicap. Now unless your home course is Beth Page Black that you play from the tips everyday I can understand the whole low 80's thing... But you mislead those gentlemen and essentially robbed them. I hope you are happy with yourself but you just removed yourself from the one thing golf is founded on, integrity!

But back on topic, I play a set Callaway X 20 Tours and I get asked all the time why I play a semi game improvement iron. The answer is because I have them weight, pured and know where they are going. Sure there are times when I don't feel the "feel" from those irons but I will sacrifice a little for accuracy... I can work the ball almost anyway I want so why would I change it is what I ask them...

Not at all. The great thing about golf is it's so individual, it's all about you and the course. Just focus on what you can control and don't worry about any other golfer.

Other than wear on the sweet spot, what would possibly intimidate you - in the sense that might prevent you from playing for money?

For me it's the following:

- a well worn PING hoofer bag.
- a brand new driver and a 30 year old putter
- new grips and/or aftermarket shafts on the long irons

Mizuno MP600 driver, Cleveland '09 Launcher 3-wood, Callaway FTiz 18 degree hybrid, Cleveland TA1 3-9, Scratch SS8620 47, 53, 58, Cleveland Classic 2 mid-mallet, Bridgestone B330S, Sun Mountain four5.

With a rather interesting discussion on equipment going on in another thread it got me thinking about different parts of the repertoire of a golfer.

Anyone else get discouraged when they're paired up and realize their new partner is wearing 5 year old tennis sneakers on the tee?

Also do people who show up with a Titleist hat, FJ windbreaker and J Lindberg pants and belt command more respect around the course. Since it is so easy to look the part of a great golfer is it no longer worth paying attention to?

to me its kind of a toss up. I prefer to play with people who have decent clubs. Most of the guys that I get paired up with who have crap clubs usually arent very good and usually the guys with nice clubs take the game more serious like me, which is better to play with during a round. Ive been fooled a few times when Ive had a guy with sweet clubs and a golf outfit on joining us when I thought they would be really good but he has a wicked slice and shoots in the upper 80s but they love the game.

    • Day 470 - 2026-01-13 Got some work in while some players were using the sim, so I had to stick around. 🙂 Good thing too, since… I hadn't yet practiced today until about 6:45 tonight. 😛
    • That's not quite the same thing as what some people messaged me today.
    • Day 152 1-12 More reps bowing wrists in downswing. Still pausing at the top. Making sure to get to lead side and getting the ball to go left. Slow progress is better than no progress.
    • Yea, if I were to make a post arguing against the heat map concept, citing some recent robot testing would be my first point. The heat map concept is what I find interesting, more on that below. The robot testing I have looked at, including the one you linked, do discreet point testing then provide that discrete data in various forms. Which as you said is old as the hills, if you know of any other heat map concept type testing, I would be interested in links to that though! No, and I did say in my first post "if this heat map data is valid and reliable" meaning I have my reservations as well. Heck beyond reservations. I have some fairly strong suspicions there are flaws. But all I have are hunches and guesses, if anyone has data to share, I would be interested to see it.  My background is I quit golfing about 9 years ago and have been toying with the idea of returning. So far that has been limited to a dozen range sessions in late Summer through Fall when the range closed. Then primarily hitting foam balls indoors using a swing speed monitor as feedback. Between the range closing and the snow flying I did buy an R10 and hit a few balls into a backyard net. The heat map concept is a graphical representation of efficiency (smash factor) loss mapped onto the face of the club. As I understand it to make the representation agnostic to swing speed or other golfer specific swing characteristics. It is more a graphical tool not a data tool. The areas are labeled numerically in discrete 1% increments while the raw data is changing at ~0.0017%/mm and these changes are represented as subtle changes in color across those discrete areas. The only data we care about in terms of the heat map is the 1.3 to 1.24 SF loss and where was the strike location on the face - 16mm heal and 5mm low. From the video the SF loss is 4.6% looking up 16mm heal and 5mm low on the heat map it is on the edge of where the map changes from 3% loss to 4%. For that data point in the video, 16mm heal, 5mm low, 71.3 mph swing speed (reference was 71.4 mph), the distance loss was 7.2% or 9 yards, 125 reference distance down to 116. However, distance loss is not part of a heat map discussion. Distance loss will be specific to the golfers swing characteristics not the club. What I was trying to convey was that I do not have enough information to determine good or bad. Are the two systems referencing strike location the same? How accurate are the two systems in measuring even if they are referencing from the same location? What variation might have been introduced by the club delivery on the shot I picked vs the reference set of shots? However, based on the data I do have and making some assumptions and guesses the results seem ok, within reason, a good place to start from and possibly refine. I do not see what is wrong with 70mph 7 iron, although that is one of my other areas of questioning. The title of the video has slow swing speed in all caps, and it seems like the videos I watch define 7i slow, medium, and fast as 70, 80, and 90. The whole question of mid iron swing speed and the implications for a players game and equipment choices is of interest to me as (according to my swing speed meter) over my ~decade break I lost 30mph swing speed on mine.
    • Maxfli, Maltby, Golfworks, all under the Dicks/Golf Galaxy umbrella... it's all a bit confounding. Looking at the pictures, they all look very, very similar in their design. I suspect they're the same club, manufactured in the same factory in China, just with different badging.  The whacky pricing structure has soured me, so I'll just cool my heels a bit. The new Mizuno's will be available to test very soon. I'm in no rush.
