Off the top of my head Paddy Harrington, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Adam Scott, I'm sure there have been more.  They've all been billed at some point or another as "The Next Tiger"  after a good finish or a win.  Until the next young kid wins then it's their turn....

I hope Rory becomes the next Rory, not the next Tiger...

Usually it's subtle.  It's something like, "is _____ ______ the next [Tiger Woods] golf has been waiting for?"

It's one of those deals where, if you pose it as a question, it masks it as not being a statement, even though it pretty much is.  You could probably find a good half dozen or more of those types of articles over the past half dozen years, each about a different golfer.  Hell, I just read one about Anthony Kim a couple weeks ago that was about 3 years old.

23 why? What's not factually correct about my statement? That was the best 4 rounds of golf I have seen. Better than any of tigers epic wins. So aggressive, accurate and yet controlled. Also Europe is running the game at the moment. When asked at the he end " Rory will you play in the USA more now?" he should have said. " why all the good players are in Europe!"

That's not really true. Rory is different because from the age of 16 he was identified as having stratospheric talent. This is his arrival and confirmation of his potential. You'd hardly rate Dustin Johnson in that context. There are great players and there are GREAT players. Nicklaus' record will in all probability never be beaten, but McIlroy is the only current young player who even the casual observer can see is a class above, in terms of raw talent, like Tiger and Norman. It was obvious when he was a mid teen.

Wow, that is just dumb.  Granted you are too young to have seen 2000.  But t is really just . . . dumb.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

2011-2000 =11

23-11=12

Yeah I don't remember that happen before I was 13

not to detract from rory's great performance, and it was great. but tiger won in 2000 by 15 strokes when nobody else was even under par. a performance which in my opinion has only been eclipsed by his performance a few months later in the open at st. andrews.

Rory is good, but until he wins 14 majors and 60+ tournaments, not even close to Tiger. I don't think I'll see someone like Tiger again in my life, only time will tell.

I think if all of you stopped comparing him to Tiger and looked at him as just 'Rory' you would appreciate him more.

Amen! Nobody is discussing about the US Open but just making comparisons btw Rory and Tiger! :D

That is true.  But at the moment there is a direct comparison to Tiger's epic wins being made.

That shows just how good this win was, though, when it draws those kinds of comparisons.

Actually, it's harder to distance yourself from the field the easier the conditions are. I don't think it's as easy as saying 15 strokes is a greater margin than 8, therefore it's more impressive. Plus, Rory's only 22 coming off an epic collapse in the immediately preceeeding major. People were questioning his ability to close.  Tiger was 2 1/2 years older with 2 majors under his with everyone, especially the media boosting his confidence by saying how great he was.

To those who doubted what I said about the "soft conditions" possibly helping Rory, he said as much - repeatedly - in post-round press conferences.

In a typical U.S. Open, Rory might have MCed. He might have also still won, but he wouldn't have shot -16 (nor would anyone else have shot it, or maybe even -8, or -7...). Rory might have a LOT of success over the years, but I think history will show he'll have more on courses that are a bit on the soft side than a bit on the firm side (and maybe he'll learn).

So you are saying Rory might have missed the cut in dry conditions? That's nice dear.

Rory has often said in the past that dry, firm greens suits his gameplay since he hits it higher than most of the other guys out there. I tend to agree with this assessment also.

LOLZ at people saying 'the next Tiger'

I have only seen 2 performances of Rory's career that would possibly show any indication of that.

But hey, if he wins one major a year until he's 40, he has 19

I thought Rory was great and he obviously has talent that only a few ever have.  If things go well for him he'll be on the list of the "best player ever" arguments.  But, there have been others early in their careers that showed great talent but somehow didn't develop into one one of the best ever players.  Some recent ones that come to mind are David Duval, Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia.  So as to Rory, he played the golf course as he found it (was not his fault it rained) better than anyone else by a big margin and his performance was something to behold.   How he would have done on a course with hard, very fast greens, who know?  We can all speculate but no one knows.  Time will tell how he compares to the other "best ever" players.

    • There are so many videos comparing and contrasting everything that I am both overwhelmed and more than a bit skeptical. Your comments above are much more valuable than hours of you-tube videos. Generally speaking, I’d much prefer to read something that someone took the time and trouble to write (such as your comments) than a bunch of videos, or worse, meaningless reviews that seem like they are all cut and paste selections of the same script. I’m more of a RTFM type than a watcher of “instructional” videos. By way of explanation, I don’t watch TV either.  So thanks - I’ll take that under advisement. I have an H3 that I bought for $10 that I’ve been carrying around but not sure why. Seems like a cool club, but I just don’t really know what to do with it.
    • I was using the window as a mirror. Just trying to be a more aware of the feels for a better backswing. Trying to not be as closed from A1 to A2. Then not letting the club head flip inside. What I was feeling was a pressure my right wrist, and like the palm of my right hand was pushing upward against the grip of the club. My right hand was the underside of the swing path.  Going to play around with this a bit more. It looked pretty decent with mirror/window work. Just wanted to jot it down.
